Title: Kayak Connection ROOTS Derby. Forms attached. Santa Cruz AUGUST 13.....
Post by: Bushy on July 06, 2016, 08:41:21 PM
BTW everyone, get your signups IN!!!!!  Call the shop or whatever.  Dave Grigsby will be at Kayak Connection at 6am Saturday to take late sign-ins, but if you do that you are wating fishing time.  It's a short list right now which means odds of winning a new kayak are really good.

Weigh-In at NOON----Noon---Noon

Bushy

Geeze.  I am Lagging!!! Sorry. Here's forms and contact info for KC

1st prize will be a new fishing kayak, most likely a Predator.  Thank you Mike Mowrey and Johnson Products!!

The workable date KC came up with is August 13th.  I know this will not acommodate everyone who wants, but that is the target.  And unlike many derbies, having a lot of entrants is not the primary aspect.

Having fun and hanging with old and new friends is what it's about.  Details will follow, and I'll post here on this fist enry, as I get them.  Probly mid-week.

It's roots.  Launch from Santa Cruz hrbor, make it back by 11am NOON weigh-in, and then go BBQ.

August will also mean more and better fish.  We're still waiting for halibut to really come in this year, so mid-August might be prime time.  I hope so!!!

After Labor Day! That's the end of tourist parking.  Pretty sure no one's going to want to pay another parking fee after they have paid launch.

Parking is 12.50 all day.  Park and launch is the same, 12.50.

Bushy -- August 13 is Ryans Central Coast Slam Down in the Cambria area. Another weekend in August is good.
I would like to make both tourneys. Just my two cents. Thanks!

BTW: Bring Back the MBK tourney!! I want to try to out fish PAT and Eugene for once.  :smt005 :smt005

MBK will happen next year for sure.  they want to alternte with KC.  and Pat and Eugene should come to KC.

WE'll see what happens but KC is considering the 13th right now.  It might b smaller, but that might be better.  Less competitions for 1st prize, likely be a new OK or Old Town kayak, again.

Let us know when the date's locked in so we can register. I assume we can just call the shop and pay over the phone?

Battle the Great Whites for Halibut in SC....  I'm down.   Though convincing my wife maybe another ordeal.   She is telling me to go out this sunday.... just not allowed in SC due to the Greats being out and about.   What are the chances that one would take my halibut again....?

Tell her they are in Capitola, not Santa Cruz........Even though we know they can be wherever they want to be at any given time.

I was out yesterday from the harbor and didn't see anything.

Did see Fuzzy Tom out there.  Come to think of it, I never saw him return..(??!!##!!??)  OMG

I did return to the SC Harbor yesterday, and saw no sharks (Proves the Shark Shield works - I hope.) out past the Mile Buoy, where I saw 2 out of 15 or so boats land halibut while I caught only a nap.
Proving it's never too late to work on WAF, I'll have to miss the tourney - that's our 50th Anniversary.

If you are not out there fishing by 6am, you don't deserve to win.  Launch as early as you want. Wind is coming up every day by 10:30 so I think 11 weigh in makes sense.

And, Mr Barker, I am NOT 107 yrs old.  I do have a birthday next week though (Will you still need me, will you still feed me.....)

I confesss to napddiction though......

Bushy

PS if enough of us want 11:30 or 12 weigh in we can adjust.  So "weigh in" on the topic. Added Survey.

Just hoping it turns out to be the 5th.
Hell, make the weigh in at 9AM.

July 17, 2005.

Alexander Velasco drove home with a brand new fishing kayak on his car today after winning a stunning victory with the biggest fish ever weighed-in at the annual Father’s Day Kayak Fishing contest in Santa Cruz. Not bad for his first time ever on a kayak!

The kayak connection in Santa Cruz hosts two kayak fishing events each year, The Father’s Day contest in June, and Grandfather’s Day derby in September. This year, the June contest was a fizzle. With rockfish season not yet open, and the halibut slow to show in Santa Cruz, no weighable fish were brought in. Derby organizers decided to hold a “consolation” contest in July to award the 1st place prize of a new Ocean Kayak “Prowler,” angler edition. On July 17, 20 kayak anglers met under grey foggy skies at the Santa Cruz Harbor to test their luck and skill against the wily prey of the Monterey Bay and each other.

The derby is sponsored by Ocean Kayaks along with the Kayak Connection and the motto is “for people who catch big fish in small boats.” Well, Alexander Velasco of Seaside, CA proved that motto in spades today by hooking and landing a toad halibut that weighed in at 32.8 pounds! Velasco has been intrigued with the idea of saltwater fishing from a kayak for some time now. He was urged to attend the derby in a borrowed kayak by his friend Joel Lotilla, a longtime kayak angler. Lotilla took Valesco out to 60 feet of water near Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz, where Velasco proved he is a natural for the sport. Using a sliding sinker and a six-foot leader to a trap rig, Velasco says the hit was subtle at first. “It was just a tap-tap-tap, but when I set the hook and felt the head shakes, I knew this was a big halibut.” Velasco had a scary moment when he brought the fish to the side of the boat and realized just how big it really was. It took two gaff attempts before he finally swung the monster aboard his kayak, onto the stringer and into the hold of the boat.

A number of rockfish and lingcod were mustered for the weigh-in at Shamrock Charters, but none came close to Velasco’s huge flatty. First prize in the Women’s division was snagged by Pat “Sea Breeze” Grant from Carmel CA, with a beautiful 3 pound Kelp rockfish caught at Stillwater Cove. The Junior Division honors were shared by brothers Alex and Eric Kaneshige, 8 and 10 years old, for their nice string of rockfish, caught in front of Santa Cruz Harbor.

A special thanks goes to Bill Rawson and all the staff at Shamrock Charters for the use of their certified scale at the weigh-in, as well as their hosting of the awards Ceremony and Barbeque.

I think that is OK, but you have to catch and secure the fish solo.  In other words, your partner can't gaff the fish or net the fish for you......

Just talked to Mike Mowrey, Ocean Kayak/Old Town Rep.  He is coming down for the derby, and he's bringing new-design boats with him.  Here's first chance for many to see the PDL (pedal) boat and the newly redesigned Trident......

List is at around 30 people now, still a small group which makes chances of winning that much better!

Any questions for me,  please use the forum -this thread or PM- and tomorrow questions need go to Kayak Connection shop 831-479-1121.

Weigh in is at F Dock by the hand-launch ramp.  From 11am to 12 noon SHARP!  and, mola-mola's are NOT eligible- (good question).

Unable to make this years event. I believe I paid over the phone the previous event and downloaded the waiver. I then left the waiver in the envelope they had placed at the shop.  Maybe they can do the same this year for the late bloomers .  :smt001

Hope to at least drive down after work to check out the new tridents. From what I have seen online. Me likey !!  The price point is affordable for me.

I had to leave early but congratulations Austin. Heard it was another wsb that won first prize. Before I left I drove by and saw the prize kayaks out there. Looked like 2017 trident or 2017 old town pdl. Which one did you get?  You deserve it bro!!!  Pictures?  Speech?

.........And the winner is....Rippin'Lips!!!!  Austin pulled a rabbit outta the hat with a gorgeous WSB caught on squid in about 60 feet of water.  Fishing the bottom.  Like Travis in last year's derby Austin secured his claim to fame in the grey light of early morning.  Fish weighed in at 20 pounds.  Nice!

Travis mounted a good defense.  He caught his first kayak halibut that weighed in at 9 pounds.  Then he caught his 2d kayak halibut a while later.....Sounds like the flatties are finally starting to come in, yes?

Joe DeMarzio took third with an 8.7# lingcod, WTG!

BBQ was great as usual.  Mike Mowrey from Ocean Kayaks attended and showed off the new Trident 13 as well as the Old Town PDL boat.  He grabbed the wrong Predator MX from his pile at home though, so Austin will be getting the (really) brand new MX shipped down.  Travis took home an awesome WErner paddle, and Joe got to pick out a new PFD.

Thanks to all who participated in this community event, and thanks for helping raise funds for the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project!

Had a great time. Great to meet new and familiar faces yesterday.  Congrats to austin on the win, and props to whoever made it out despite "no fish in santa cruz"

After about 2 hours of sleep the night before,
Arrived at 530am, with a few already prepping to launch.  Launched at 645, very foggy, and visibility and navigation was aweful.  Thanks to ff gps with previous waypoints. paddled west towards the pier for some bait.  Got a dozen or so lizard fish quickly, and drifted them toward the kelp beds in front of lighthouse. Nothing. Made way to about another 1/2 mile to the west to fish the reefs. Switched to rf gear and got nothing but a few rockfish and the most snags ive ever had, losing most of my rigs, called it a day at about 11, paddled in to see the weigh in results.  Met with austin at the ramp to check out his fish. Beautiful.  Cleaned, up loaded up and headed for the bbq.  It was nice to check out the new pdl kayak from old town, and the upcomming trident design which leaves mych consideration.

Thanks bushy and kayak connection again for making this happen.

thanks to all those involved. It was a good tourney.

Nice to meet and fish with a few more NCKA members out there.

Fishing was slow but was able to land 4 lings and a few rockfish. I was hoping to get a halibut but couldn't get any bait. The one mackerel I had on, something snatch it and broke the leader :(

I couldn't get the damn lizard fish off the sabiki. They were biting on top, middle, and deep.

Looking forward to the next one :)

congrats to the winner :) beautiful sea bass!

Why didn't you use the lizard fish as bait?

I was told it wasn't good bait to use?

They are extremely slimy. Maybe I should use it next time

I've got some action on a live lizard fish, mostly rocks, but several nice takedowns on frozen macs  (though at least one of those was most likely seal)

While they aren't the first thing I'd reach for in a livewell, they aren't bad, especially if you got no other live bait.  With a 2 hook rig, I'll often times put one on each hook.  You do get more rockfish, as sebast said, but I think that's mostly because they are slurping size.

Those lizard fish were very plentiful near the pier. Im sure they are ok bait for everything.  They stay alive pretty long on the hook if you put them on right.  So thats an advantage over macks and chovies.  I got a few rf off those.

Did see some smelt and baitballs further out, but by the time i busted out my sibiki, they were gone.

Thanks Dave and Bushy for another KC derby.
Searched for hali's and WSB but didn't find either. Did hook a batray in the wing and it sure felt like a hali though.
Stayed out past the weigh-in looking for Mr. Big, so missed the BBQ again.
Congrats to the winners-Austin, Travis and Joe.

Congrats to Trav, Aviv and Joe(l?) great to see some others catching when there are no fish in Santa Cruz  :smt044

Thanks for all the praises, it was quite a fun fight landing it on my 8'6 tiger lite and Abu 5500 15 main 25 leader... 😜 It didn't come in easy though, it was about a 20 minute battle before I got to even get a glimpse of it not to mention I also had two seal lions bee lining it to me.. I was sure it was a goner, guess I just had luck on my side for once...

First one I've landed this year, from what I know (there are a ton out here) the bite is going to be super hot in a week or even the end of this week. If you wanna roll and go ghost bustin let me know!!

BTW bushy.. Thanks for shorting its weight 😜 Closer to 23 (22.11oz) not to mention this weight came in after being in a gunny sack for 4 hours and I bled it out 😘
