Title: New to fishing and kayaking.
Post by: Onairos on August 05, 2017, 12:49:54 AM
Hey all,

I'm from Suisun, and I am new to everything. Fishing, kayaking, or anything involving the outdoors. The first time I tried anything fishing related was crab snaring last year. Since then I was hooked. But then I saw people who were using kayaks whole crabbing and came back with coolers full of crabs.

That made me go out and look for a kayak and that was when I saw a fishing kayak. I later bought a sit in fishing kayak, a 10'6" future beach angler kayak,  but only used it for crabbing.
I've been meaning to try it out for some fishing but I have no idea what to do, and I don't know anyone who kayak fishes.

I joined this forum to learn everything I can, and maybe to join some people whenever they go out. I just want to enjoy the outdoors more now and to not just sit down in my house playing video games or binge watch a show on Netflix.

Welcome to NCKA!

Lots of information to pick up from here. Read safety stuff before doing the ocean.

Join a hookup.

Aloha,
If you are new to kayak fishing, take some time to read up on kayak fishing safety. Are you planning on going out in freshwater or salt water? It's now standard to get a good life jacket, minimum 3mm front zipper wet suit, VHF radio for calling for help (coast guard or other kayakers/boaters, portable bilge pump? and after 10 posts on the NCKA site you can get on Hookups with other NCKA kayak fishermen.
We have a great community (Ohana) with a lot of generosity and goodwill.
Aloha,
da Bruddah

Welcome to the madness. Between kayaking and fishing there is a lot to learn. You have the Suisun Marina and Beldens Landing close by for kayak fishing. You can troll lures or drift live bait. Do a search on the site for QRAS to learn about using a Quick Release Anchor System. With an anchor you can fish with bait for stripers or sturgeon. It is easy to spend a lot of money between fishing gear and kayak gear. Safety gear is important and should be in your kayak before you start. After that you will need some fishing gear. At some point you will probably want to upgrade your kayak to a sit on top model. You can find used ones for sale on the site for a good price. Salmon and striper fishing will be on the upswing soon for freshwater fishing. Use the forum search function for tips on both. The best way to learn is to get out and fish. Good luck.  :smt006
