I had a very interesting anomaly happen to me a few weeks ago when I was fishing lovers point, Monterey area. It was getting towards the end of our day of fishing and we were starting wind down (10-11am ish) and my FF had been working flawlessly all day and as I was making a pass about 25 yards outside of the furthest kelp "clump" my depth warning indicator beeped at me a couple of times (set @ 10') which caught me off-guard because I knew that the depth in the area that I was fishing was generally anywhere from 50-65fow and when it beeped it was showing that I was right above something that was 10' below me. The FF was showing a depth of  anywhere between 10-14' for about 15-20 seconds then my FF went right back to the 50-65 fow it had been earlier. Not to mention the interesting "current swirl" that appeared like 3 seconds after my depth warning beeped at me. I just cant help but think something was scoping me out. my buddy told me it was probably just a dolphin/seal or something but it blocked out my whole transducer signal. it was a trip for sure...

A large pod of bait can do something similar & actually cause the unit to think it is reading the bottom.  If you were in 50-65 fow, the bait ball or potential "object" would have needed to be at least 21' in diameter ... give or take.  :smt002

Yep! The only way a shark, dolphin or even whale could black out the screen is it would need to be about 2' under you. Sounds like bait. I was a Tahoe last year in 200' and my screen went black at 50'. It was a school of Kokanee so thick it blacked out my screen. Caught a lot of them little boogers that day.

I was just flipping through old pictures and found this gem.  Suddenly this picture has become more "interesting" than when I took it in March 2014    :shark

BTW, I made a trek to the cement ship on Friday 7/3 at midday to see if the family could see one.  No luck with the binoculars, but out on the pier, a fisherman said you can see them crossing under the right side.  Sure enough, I heard some gasps and ran over to the spot and there was a big dark fish cruising along.  You could make out the dorsal, which never surfaced.  It or they seemed to have a very regular cruising pattern, and I saw it again, same spot and heading . . . .  First confirmed wild GWS sighting for me.  :smt001 Believe it or not I saw a fin heading into SWS in December.  "Could have been a dolphin."

the pic was a good day though! Ah, paddling through Matilda's cruising grounds....

man, I miss the bonker I had then. Lost it at Davenport when I caught that big starry. it matched my gaff & everything.
I need to build a new one.

I was scared shitless by something large that left a swirl larger than my kayak, 2" off my stern, then I watched a very large shadow cruise under me.  At bean hollow.  I was certain it was a shark, but Sean doubted me.

On dry land, watching videos of gws swimming, I'm certain he was right.  Sharks don't make swirls.  They glide smoothly.  They only disturb the water when they are trying to eat something.

Hook on to one of them two weeks ago when it took my live mackerel bait. Broke off as soon as I saw that it was a GWS when it swam up near the surface. scary.,.

we were just unsure of what it was :smt002. I have it noted in my log as a "sealsharkfish". And the one that scoped me made a nice big swirl...at first. We were just whistling in the dark back then. Today, I'd say most likely it was a shark checking you out.

Well said.  I was definitely care free for my first two seasons.

That's unbelievable Yowlie to see one in real life so easily. That would really make me less certain of being so confident in the water

That's really a shame to hear about this at the Seacliff Cement ship I always planned to try surfing it, if the conditions are right after I heard this comment

"Seacliff is only surfable, or worth surfing I should say, about a weeks worth of days durring winter or spring seasons. In that case, you should surf the wave that refracts off of the boat" *SIC

Pretty sure I'll stay away no and stick to kelp invested areas in my kayak and surfboard

Don't worry. By that time these fish will be gone.   this is an unusual and transient condition.

and, the waves at Cement Ship suck.  Even when they don't.

LOL
