Next years Crabfest will be happening on 01/30/16. Yes I know it is a Saturday. This will allow people to stay the night after the event. Sorry to those who enjoy having the event on a Sunday. Most will be camping in the Jetty Camground, so try and book there first.
To book your site visit: http://sonomacountycamping.org/
Please post here what site you have so that we can confirm that NCKA has most of the sites. Please let me know if you have any questions.
+ 1 for Saturday! Site 92 for Friday and Saturday.

Surf / wind reports look promising?
sorry, couldn't resist.
What I should have asked is: any idea of jetty sites that are more tent friendly than others WRT wind?

Not really, the main issue for tents is the wind changes direction so much that you really can't find a non windy spot.

outside the jetty camping Ican vouch that site 75 is awesome! launch right out the back and into the bay. check out google earth for more...

likewise, 46-50 are pretty solid. Not convenient for launching, but pretty sheltered from the wind on most sides; a minivan or larger takes care of most of the remaining exposure.

I have 107 Wednesday through Sunday.

I'm in for 125 from Fri to Mon

As much as I want to be next to the wild boar and paella, the site above is too good to pass up, and that jetty's too windy for my precious beauty sleep, so NewFutureRon and SaraL are in 75 from Friday 'till Monday! Jerry, thanks for the tip!
Hopefully my lack of wind fortitude doesn't mess things up for taking over the jetty.
Woot!

Laura and I are in site 91, Thursday through Sunday!

I'm in.

WOW, only 11 out of 46 jetty sites left!!!! Get on it, if you want a spot.

This has to be the most popular NCKA event. A year away and the campground is almost full. Now I just have to wait a freaking year.
-
It looks like the left circle in the cove campground is also being used by our group. So if you want to book in that are that would be the spot.

You guys rock, you trow a hell of a tournament for crabfest, only a handful of crab showed up this year for about 100 anglers and nobody cares about that. because the campground just about sold out for next year and it was just announced a couple of days ago.
Thank you guys and the sponsors for putting this together

This is not meant in a snarky way at all. I'm just curious why hold the event so far away from the opener when that area has been crabbed, crabbed and crabbed out some more.

It would be impossible to get a camping spot in November. Plus it's not all about the crabbing. In years past we have had plenty of crab come in. This year the wind prevented many people from going out.
-
I go to have fun. If I get crab that is just a bonus. I got perch from the beach right there. To me this is like a family reunion. This was my third year and can't wait for next years.

and is fun to hangout with your friends :party :occasion14:
yeah is more productive at HMB, but who wants to camp in a parking lot?
and it may be more productive in Bodega next year... :yak if people quit on taking the females :smt044

It's more about the fest, than it is about the crab.

Do you know if anyone catching any dungies?
Thinking about trying before this season is terminated.
Stayed at Doran about a week ago and I saw only one kayaker and two guys in an aluminum working pots off the beach. Didn't get to talk to either of them but it didn't look promising when they were pulling pots. Talked to a few jetty crabbers who were flooded with shorts, but not a single keeper red or dungy. The only keeper I saw came in on a rod a reel by a guy fishing for rockfish. The highlight though was a dad and his four teenage kids/kids' friends crabbing from the beach. I couldn't contain my laughter at their hijinx. Some seriously funny shit.

200 days left until the Crabfest 2016. There are still 5 spots left in the Jetty Campground. This will be the 5th year of Crabfest, make sure you have a spot for the first gathering of the year.

Last year was my first NCKA event. Met a few folks, I am quiet. But even though the weather wasn't great we had a great time at the potluck and awards.

Hi all,
I'm a newbie. Would be interested in coming. I don't have an rv. Are you allowed to have two tents and two cars on one site? Just wondering.
-
Yes,you can. We do every year. Might have a tough time fitting two cars, but overflow lot is close.

That shouldn't be an issue. PaddlingBear is correct. Many people have multiple tents at their sites. Here is some info from Doran Beach website "A maximum of 8 people allowed per campsite at anytime (includes children)."

It looks like there are only 4 spots left in the Jetty Campground. :smt006

Well it looks like the Jetty Campground is booked now, except for the spots that are first come first serve. Is anybody camping in the Cove, Gull, or Shell Campgrounds? They are at Doran Beach just in a different area.
-
I am new to NCKA and am wanting to meet some members. Is there a camp site close by where i could drive on over for the festivities?
-

The Cove, Gull, or Shell Campgrounds are in the same campground just different locations. The link on the first page will show you what is available in those sites.
-
The Jetty camp site area also have a few first come first serve, (non reservable) sites too. Look at the link as vwool stated (1st post) for more details. That will be a better option as it's near the Jetty day use parking, which is where the check in and out area will be.

Pakeha Cherie has 108 from Thurs to Monday!

OK, I am counting the days down until Crab Fest. Seriously looking forward to it - can't wait to get away for a few days, enjoy the water (and maybe the wind, haha).
I know that January will be here before I know it, but reading all the posts makes me "home sick" for NCKA!
-
I am hoping to post more info towards the end of the month. I am getting excited too.
-
Gonna be there with a grip of newbies, thanks for doing it again. Let's hope for no winds!

There are still spots open in the Cove, Gull and Shell campgrounds. They do have a note on the website stating that the restrooms will be closed but the nearby Jetty and Miwok restroom are open.
Also if people are still looking for spots maybe someone can share a spot. There is overflow parking for extra vehicles (at a cost). Here are some of the rules from the parks site. One states that 8 people max can be at a site. There are also first come first serve spaces.
Rules from the parks website:
-Check in is 2 p.m. Check out is at 12 p.m. Reservations will be held until 12 p.m. the day after scheduled arrival.
-A maximum of eight people are allowed at each camp site.
-Dogs on leash are allowed in most campgrounds with a fee of $2 per dog per night.
-
Anyone have a clue of the chances crab season will be open for our fest?
I'm not planning on cancelling, plenty of other things to do along the coast and my wife will probably be thrilled to do more than just watch me from the campgrounds. Ha!
If indeed the season is still closed during our event, I MAY move from the jetty to a more picturesque spot at the campgrounds.
-
The article in today's CC Times doesn't paint a very rosy picture. Sounds like it could take many weeks before the crab are free of the toxins. Crabfest was still great last year, even though the foul weather kept many of us off of the water.

At this time I have no clue what the plan is. The event and potluck will still go on, we can always change the target species as we get closer.
-
Water temps are returning to normal, which will reduce the algal bloom. Then we just wait for the crabs to cycle it out of their system.
Here's the Bodega buoy for reference. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46013
-
I am not cancelling, as a matter of fact I am going to Doran later today, it is a great place to hang out with friends.
There was only a few people that went crabbing this year anyways, my kayak never came off the top of my truck till I got home.
-
Sorry to say we can't make it after all. I already paid $129.50 for the rv site #101 (1/28/16 - 2/1/16). PM me if you want it, else I'll see if I can get my money back.

We're definitely going, in fact the family and I are quite excited. Crabfest is a wonderful event with or without crabbing. Delayed opening might just result in more abundant crab later. The glass is way more than half full. C-ya there!

I have a good feeling the crab will be allowed to come out and play. Here is this years logo from our very own Novofish (Tony). What I really like about this logo is it takes all the aspects of Crabfest. Over the years this event has turned into a true family event that includes kayaks, food, fishing, friends, ukes and plain old fest.
Thank you Tony!
-
Wow. That is awesome you guys!!!! That would make a cool poster. Those colors are sweet!!!!
-
Another fine piece of artwork by Tony. Victor you should see if if Taylor can put that on some Klean Kanteens. I'd be all over that, plus a hoodie or tee as well.
-
Logo looks cool, should add some poison bottle to it. to remember the " temporary" closure.
-
Awesome art work!! Throw a skull and crossed bones on one of those crab. :smt001

A big thank you to Yester and Powell Rods for being a sponsor of Crabfest 2016. This year I am adding a perch category (CPR), more info on this will be posted later.

technically, the season is closed and it would be illegal to fish for crab; setting at crab trap would be considered crabbing....

Just kidding, killer art!!!

Promar/Ahi will again be sponsoring Crabest. They have been a primary sponsor since the start. I am happy to welcome back Promar/Ahi as a sponsor. Their crabbing gear is popular among kayak anglers.

A big thank you to Klean Kanteen, they have donated some great items for the raffle. Please take time to check them out at online at www.kleankanteen.com/ or on facebook at www.facebook.com/kleankanteen/?fref=ts
They make some great products that I believe could help kayak anglers stay hydrated on the water.

Awesome Victor! I'm stoked Klean Kanteen came through. They are another Chico success story. Great people and a fine product.
You know they do custom orders too? I'm not sure how many we'd need to order or how much lead time but I'd be up to buying one with the Crabfest logo on it!!!
Let me know, I can pick them up and bring thing down for you.

Today's. It's looking better and better. Two good tests for Russian River with numbers dropping.
-
yea, things look to be trending down, but to think a sample size of 6 crabs is representative of bodega bay or any harbor is crazy...
Not that i would be worried about eating a pot full today really...
-
This is always a fun event and will happen on the same day as crabfest. If your family is in the area and looking for something to do this is always an option.

I am working on the price at the moment. I will let all of you know as soon as I find out. Here is the link without the logo: http://www.kleankanteen.com/products/single-wall-classic-27oz?variant=1604622403

Watching the six o'clock news tonight they reported that the recent seal deaths/sickness were from Domoic Acid poisoning...that'll put the scare in the public for quite a spell. The report blamed brain damage in the seals.
-
This may turn into one of the biggest NCKA potlucks. Get your perch fishing gear ready.

Can we do the CPR for the Derby?

Can we do the CPR for the Derby?
That is a negative. I am still crossing my fingers that it opens. There needs to be two passing test to open, that won't happen for Christmas but maybe for Crabfest.

Could explain our public officials in San Francisco too. Too much dumboic acid.

Russian River, Pt. Reyes and HMB all had numbers go up in the last test collected 12/8 and reported yesterday.

CC Times had a very interesting article about Demoic acid and its effect on the Sea-lion population. I'm not a fur ball fan but its horrible what this poison is doing to the mental abilities of these animals. Hopefully these extended algae blooms will not become the new normal.

This may be the year we invent a new sport.

If the crabbing opens up, it will be sweet. Crabfest opener... :smt007

I knew the Jetty Camground was booked, but the whole campground is almost booked. I wonder if there is another event happening or if the crab have sent out a save the date.

Any thoughts of postponing for a month? I doubt we will be crabbing in january :smt010

Any thoughts of postponing for a month? I doubt we will be crabbing in january :smt010
With campsites already booked, it would be a pain to postpone the event. At this point the event will go on regardless of the crab. This has always been a great family event and potluck. We may just have more fest.
This year will also include a prize for the largest perch.
-
Anyone cancelling? Give me a yell... Didn't get a camp site and could buy you out... :smt006

I'm new to the club, and just reserved site 73 for three nights. Looking forward to it. Is there a way that I can help if I don't have any crabbing gear? I'm new to this, my yak has never been wet and I sure as hell don't want to leach off anybody. I'm up to carrying some traps and setting them, no problem there.
Edit:
I live in Santa Rosa and will have room for firewood that I can carry for someone if needed. My truck bed normally has room.
Thanks,
Waterline Tom

People tent it every year.

So who has fished for perch at Doran Beach? From kayak and from shore? I know a few people caught some perch at crabfest last year.
-
Vic, there are alot of perch inside the harbor. There is alot of cool stuff to explore and any structure should hold fish. try around pilings and under docks. also chum the Eel grass beds with Saltine crackers to attract Jack Smelt. The Perch and Smelt on Ultra light gear is a blast. I have had most success anchoring above structure and casting toward or beyond. Fly guys should try intermediate and type II sinking lines with white beadhead chrystal Buggers in smaller sizes(People have been known to catch Steelhead and Halibut inside the Harbor) . Be aware of boat traffic coming and going. I am going to try to be there if I can get a weekend day off. David

Sweet intel David/Cpt!
Hope you make it out :smt001

Well if crab isn't open, perch will be the target, and I could see you in the running.

I've fouled and released a few from the beach by the jetty on crab snares before. Small shark too, which was a kind of fun surprise.

Well, I have some bad news. Linelle's Mom died last Monday. The family is having the memorial on the 30th of Jan. So I have two campsites that I'm not going to be able to use for Friday and Saturday night. All paid for. If anyone needs a site or two for both nights please PM me. The sites are # 124 and 127 Thanks, Craig

Dang Craig, sorry bro.

So sorry for your loss, Craig and Linelle! Our grandfather passed away on this past Wednesday. He was 91 and it was sudden considering he was still a pretty active guy. A Navy Seabee, Fireman/Engineer/Captain. So not easy to loose the ones we love.

Can anyone tell me when we will know for sure if we can take crab at Crabfest? I assume it will depend on a test being performed before Crabfest with enough time for the bureaucrats to make it official. Based on the schedule they have used for testing, when is the last test that will be in time for Crabfest?

Numbers keep dropping and looking better and better. Today:
https://www.cdph.ca.gov/pubsforms/Documents/fdbFrSSda24.pdf
So, we have been getting pretty consistent tuesday updates, and the south land opened on a thursday after the tuesday numbers. So I'd say two clean tuesday tests would result in a thursday opener so long as the entire coast is clean. Eureka tested above warning levels yet again in the results released today by just barely, so at least 16 days from today. Unless dfw decides to open sonoma coast and keep us closed here. Which would be fantastic and hopefully something that happens this week, but I'm not holding my breath.
-
So they will test the Tuesday before Crabfest with a chance of opening on the Thursday before. Thanks.
-
So they will test the Tuesday before Crabfest with a chance of opening on the Thursday before. Thanks.
There is a lag time between the tests being conducted and being released. The tests that will be released in 2 weeks will be conducted soon (like today), ocean conditions permitting. I'm not sure anyone is attempting to cross the humboldt bar right now.

Ok. I figured there was lag time. I guess the weather complicates things too. Do we expect any results to be released before crabfest? I haven't been following the reports as they come out.

Sorry for your lost. Hopefully, someone will take your spot/s.

Again a big thank you to Dan and The Headwaters.

Since crabbing is still closed and it doesn't look like it will open up this month, I will be changing things up a bit. This event will still be called Crabfest, it will just be known as the year that crabbing was closed. If crabbing happens to open I will add a crab category.
Here are the new rules.
There will be three categories for this perch event: Kayak, Shore and Junior Division (17 and under). Single biggest perch in each category wins.
You may fish wherever you want within the Doran Beach Campground with whatever you want casting from shore, kayak and within current DFG regulations. For the Kayak category, kayaks must launch from the Doran Beach Campground.
To be eligible for any prizes you must check in by the cut-off time. The winner in each category will be awarded a prize. All prizes will be given after the potluck followed by the raffle benefiting Diabetes Youth Families.
Rules:
1. All fish entered must be caught using methods deemed legal by the California Department of Fish and Game. All adult anglers over the age of 16 must possess a current California fishing license while engaged in fishing for the event. Shore and kayak fishing only, no boats or motors allowed.
2. You will be required to wear a PFD or life jacket while competing off of a kayak and it is suggested while shore fishing. You are also required to have a charged and functioning VHF radio while competing.
3. The entire fish must be photographed laying straight on a measuring board with either the fishes top or bottom jaw touching the boards end (0” mark). Fish will not be allowed at the check-in table.
4. All fish photos must be presented for weigh-in at the official measuring station by 12:30 pm on event day.
5. Fish caught prior to the day of the Derby are ineligible.
6. All scoring photos must include the tourney wrist band with your name clearly showing. Wristbands will be available at the check-in table located in the Jetty Day Use Area.
7. All perch species and only perch species are eligible for the Derby.
8. Winners will be determined by the single PERCH of greatest length. Should two or more fish tie for greatest length, event host will decide on a method to determine the winner.
***Rules and times can be changed at any time by event host.

A Hobie kayak sailing regatta???
-
Bear in mind, I think you need registration #'s on a kayak if you sail it.
Generally, every sail-powered vessel over eight feet in length and every motor-driven vessel (regardless of length) that is not documented by the U.S. Coast Guard which is used or on the waters of this state are subject to registration by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Thanks for the link. That's the first time I've seen somebody mention "noodle rod" in about 25 years. I've got an old Fenwick 12'er I used for steelhead on 2lb test while fishing the Mad in the late 80's. Seems awful slow for a windy beach, perhaps drag it along anyway. I've got my yak but not the gear for the ocean yet, so I'll walk the beach. Ordered a VHF a few minutes ago.
Having caught but one perch in my life, I have grand visions of winning this thing :smt044

Awesome, I guess if there's some EZup space we could get a group together, I'm really wanting to play too.
I will talk to the boss about Fri. nite.
I'm halfway thinking of not even bringing the Yak, and just chillin it on Sat.
Got to bail at about 1pm on Sat. for father in law's B-day party.

For those who are looking for information on perch fishing, here is a great article from one of our own:
www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?page=10
So - any recipes out there? What is the best way to fry-up a surf perch?
-
Don't forget to download your waiver, waivers cab be found on the first page of this thread. Everyone who turns in a waiver the morning of the event will recive 1 ticket for the kayak raffle, extra tickets for the kayak will be $5 each.
-
I won't be bringing my kayak since there won't be any crabbing and I can fish from shore for the perch. I'm just planning on chilling and maybe playing games. Anyone know how to play Phase 10? Cribbage?
-
I'm up for domino's and there is a new app game called "heads up" that is hysterical!
-
Bringing my domino's then!
Uke too, but I stink at playing it.
-
15-2 15-4 ain't no more. My wife is from Michigan, though I haven't played in years and half forgot :smt012

Scaled, gut'd and scored along the thicker part of the body; so it cooks evenly...
Then light salt, garlic powder and black pepper, then dredged in flour... fry in a pan until the fins are nice a crispy..... and youre in the money!!! the crunchy fins are the bomb!!! :smt007
-
Asked for the days off but was denied :smt013 Looks like I'm going to miss out on lots of fun :smt010

This is what NOAA has fo the day of the event:
SaturdayVariable winds less than 5 kt becoming NNW around 6 kt in the morning. A chance of showers. WNW swell 8 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.
This event has gone from being sunny the first year to gale force winds last year. I think we can handle whatever we get. We are NCKA!

What are the periods concerning the waves and swell?
I have no idea, maybe someone else knows where to find that. Usually NOAA post that a few days before the actual day. We will find out when we get there. The weather is always changing.

We got here at about 4pm, waves were roaring! Didn't fish but lucked out with just some sprinkles instead of rain while setting up. There is a high surf advisory through Fri night, chance of sneaker waves.

Ok, I am heading off to Doran this morning and here are some reminders:
1) If you are coming just for the day, pay the day use the morning of. If there is nobody at the station use the iron ranger to pay.
2) Bring a dish for the potluck. Bring your own plates and utensils and help clean up afterwords.
3) There is a raffle so bring some cash, all proceeds go to www.DYF.org
4) Print off a waiver, we will have extras but if we run out that's it. If you turn one in but decide to not participate, that is ok you will still get a ticket for the kayak.
5) Have fun, this is what the event is all about.
If you have any questions, I will be in site 104. See everyone in the morning. If there is anything else I can think of I will post it here. I will be checking this post, so feel free to ask questions here too.
