Well senior year is almost over and the boys are up to somethin. Kris morales(Cochino), Brian Alarid, Jackson Meuter and I are all headed to Kaanapali Maui Hawaii for a week and besides chasing tail by the pool, we are trying to chase fish tail too. We are planning to book a fly fishing day for bonefish with captain Jon Jon with local fishing knowlege and try to find some fish on our own the other days. I have done some studying and learned a few tips on surf fishing around the island but I need a little more advice. If anyone's knows any spots, people, rigs, tips or advice about fishing the island it would be a big help. Without a boat, our kayaks, or the good ole Monterey bay we're a little out of our element.

First-off, congrats on making through phase 1 of your academic lives! :smt005

I fished that area from shore years ago and found that a short walk away from the crowded beaches provided practically a fish on every cast using shrimp on a simple bottom fishing rig, dropper loop and 1 - 2 oz lead - cheap f/w bass rated rod.

Also, trout and bass type spinners, and kastmasters worked well too.

Get one of those tropical fish I.D. cards cuz you are gonna catch some really cool fish!

Don't forget to take pics :smt003

Hey Andrew,
Congrats on pursuing your educational goals. Time went by and I did no hook up with you for fishing down your way.
anyway this past season.  As a local you can put a cheap rig together, maybe if you have a good spinner bring it, load it with 40# braid and do a 3 way with a fairly light weight and a leader line fluorocarbon maybe 20#. The best cheap bait is to use frozen squid. Just cut in up in small pieces and don't use a very big hook. If you can find a oood place to cast out that is kind of deep and maybe has some rocks, you might be able to hook a jack cravelle (papio) and sometimes oio (bonefish) depending of where you are.
I have never fished on Maui, but I would go to the more non-tourist places like Honolua Bay, Kapalua and places where the ocean may not be so calm and has rocks and deeper drop off.
Just cast out and if you have a rod holder that's great, and wait for the fish to bite. Frozen squid is a winner!!!
You might acquaint yourself the local fish and many of the fish will also be top biting predators , so you could use some kind of lure. Ask a local fishing store what works. The other great  thing that you could do is go spearfishing with a 3 prong Hawaiian Sling. It is a simple one piece unit with the surgical tubing already attached and you hold it in your hands and pull back of the spear shaft which is thicker than a usual spear. They are great for spearing some of good eating reef fishes.
A lot of the reef fishes may look really beautiful, but are not really good eating.
I like diving because the water is so warm and if you go out early in the morning all the fish are out feeding. Just swimming around is a magical experience. You will some good fins a mask and snorkel.+
Here's a poster of some of the fish in Hawaii.
Have a great time in the ocean and mountains and rivers!!!
aloha,
