So I’m thinking I’ll give mooching a shot when I get tired of trolling or when I find a good looking area.

Question: for fishing a bait such as 5” anchovies how do you like to hook them? Nose hook? Tail hook? Cut plug them and then front hook so they get a bit of movement? Suggestions appreciated.

My buddy showed me to thread the line through the eye with a needle and pull through the anus and have the hook facing up over the head.  Tie a half hitch up from the tail and attach to swivel.  Rubber band around gills... :smt006

This.

If it's a fast drift, then hook goes out the tail.

These guys got it right, but I don't get that complicated with putting rubber band on gills.  But the bait threader is a must for mooching IMO.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I gave it a go and caught some fish other than salmon so it made sense to me!

Or you can use a two hook rig hard tied snells.  One hook through the head, one through the tail.  Howard McKim Alaska style.

Does anyone have a tutorial on tying the above described rig with two shelled hooks?

Does mooching require some spinning actions like trolling?  I am thinking just use krippled or fbr and let it drift.

My theory is that fish bite while sending down the down rigger.

Many good suggestions here, but be sure to check regs,
Most times when mooching, it is required to use a circle hook. Circle hooks tend to work best as singles when tying leaders.

I concur.  the double snell rig I use octopus hooks, but not in California.  Except WSB,, a longer rig for squid and bigger hooks.
