Mark at Kayak Connection is thinking about having his annual derby at Loch Lomond this year.  Remember, rockfish season is not open at the beginning of June.  Last year, nobody brought in any fish, cause rockfish was closed and the halibut were nowhere to be found. I suggested he hold the Derby in July, like our make-up contest last year, but he really likes the tradition of a Father's Day Derby.

How do you guys feel about this?  Do we have enough interest to make it worthwhile?  If enough people are involved, I' think that that Ocean Kayaks would still provide a grand prize kayak for 1st place.  Loch Lomond is still cool enough at the beginning of June to be decent for trout fishing, DFG is still planting at that time.  Plus, there are some behemoth bass in that lake.  Last year a guy brought in a 14-pounder(confirmed with picture).

Loch Lomond is a reservoir nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains with redwoods and fir trees all around.  There's a bunch of nice picnic spots so we could have a great BBQ/awards ceremony there.  I've caught quite a few trout there from the shore and from boats.

Reply to this post so i can get back to the Kayak Connection people.

Hey Allen how you doing?Sound good to me I'm in. I have trouble getting away for fathers day.I always willing to try new bass waters.
Why Do I paddle a kayak instead of a float tube or a pontoon boat? I like seeing where I'm going not where I've been!
Paddle safe and wrap'em tight.

I'd prefer a July contest, but Loch Lomond is a nice lake to hold a tourney.  I'd be more interested in a trout only event.  Keeping a big bass alive to weigh and release could be difficult on a long paddle back to the weigh in station.

thanks Keven, Mooch, Rickey.  Still like to hear from more norcal's......  If the contet was trout only, would the heaviest limit be the way to go, or best single fish?  (most of the trout caught there are planters, and small.  though last year had a few plants of Eagle Lake Trout, 16-18", and there's gotta be some holdovers in the lake still.)

Freshwater contest might atract more newbies, also, or others that aren't comforttable on the ocean yet.

I am interested. I would also vote for trout only.

Since this is my first fathers day I am unclear on current WAF but assuming I am good I would be in. I have only caught a few trout in my life but what the heck! I agree with Kevin though, a trout only event seems the best way to go. Heaviest limit seems best as well due to the planter factor.

Oh yeah and whatever you do don't let Mooch win, we will never hear the end of it!  :smt003

Food for thought. When I helped out Western Outdoors with their tourney.
Three judges were in boats. Each contestant had a flag when they caught a fish, they waved the flag.
THE JUDGE would come over measure the fish and record the measurements.

I would volunteer to be a judge if we wanted to use that format and assuming I can attend.

I would definitely participate in a July tournament.

Maybe a trout tournament - if the cabin fever is bad enough  :smt044

Trout sounds good to me. I vote for the largest single fish I have no desire to keep 5 planters. I'm fishing for the holdovers.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

I agree with the largest single fish. I am a big fan of C&R with trout, even planters. I seldom keep one or two, much less 5.

I keep the planters- and if I'm lucky enought to land 5 keepers, I'll give a few to my mom (loves fresh fish) and sometimes to our janitor at work.

Loch Lomond is a long, narrow lake that doesn't allow gas motors.  It would be difficult to manage if kayaks were spread across the lake.

Having never been to Loch Lomond I don't know what would be viable but we could get 3 judge kayaks and have people bring the catch to the judges. I am cool either way.
