Can anybody make it over this week?  I'd like to give it a shot.
BTW, how long of a paddle is it to the towers?
Would it be any closer if you guys launched from anywhere else like Fremont?

Hey Chuck, weekdays are almost impossible for me to do without a lot of prior notice.

I thought the paddle was pretty freakin long but I am also a pretty weak paddler. Looking at the few maps that where posted it seems like a Fremont launch would be closer distance wise but have a greater possibility of having to deal with adverse weather traversing the bay. Paddling through the slough is protected from winds blowing from the North or South but an East or West wind  could funnel down through the slough and make for a tough paddle. I forgot to reset my odometer on my GPS but I would estimate from the launch point to the towers was about 3 miles. I think it took me about an hour on the way back in. I think it would be a lot tougher if you where towing a big Sturgy.

I am all for exploring closer launches. I am going to do some hunting online tonight for a good nautical map and upload my way points to see what might be closer.

Bill, also remember that there were a few PB up above the powerlines probably 1-2 miles away, up Coyote.  It might be worth poking around up there to see if there is anything feasible.

Another option is that there is a trail along the dike all thy way out to close to the powerlines.  An ambitios person might devise a way to tow a kayak out there.

I had a dream I invented a great bike towable kayak cart. I took it out on Alviso, launched, came back and it was gone!

I once saw a guy on a bike at Lake Chabot towing a canoe on a some cool wheels that would be great for a kayak.

However, what's the trail terrain like around Alviso and is there a secure place to lock'em to?

I think this is a job for........"Super-boat-owner-cpyak"....able to leap through long paddles in a single turn of a key......  :smt003

it's a bird...no, it's a plane....it's MOTHERSHIP!   :worship  :worship  :worship

Mothership towing express? Hmmmmm  :smt026  :smt041  :smt038

nah :smt018 ....if our buddy Erik and Josh can land a beast without the help of a boat....WE can do it too :smt002 Besides, it would seem more "credible" if we caught a big game fish under our own steam  :smt002 (just my opinion - no offense to anyone)

Shoreline blvd might get you on the bay propper a little earlier, or maybe you could launch from dixon landind rd and paddle down coyote creek.  Did you guys go east or west after popping into the bay?

We never really made it to the bay proper. I got as far as the mouth of Coyote but never out into the bay.

I don't know if Shoreline will take you out there. IIRC Shoreline dea ends into that little golf course with the pond but does not have bay access. I could be wrong though. Anyways I think that is a really long paddle from where we fished. Moffet field was close, we watched a couple of jets take off and that huge transport do touch and goes.

I should be able to get some better data tonight once I get my GPS coordinates onto my laptop.

I've been scrolling around and zooming in on different parts of this map to locate possible launch spots closest to the power line towers.  I haven't had any luck finding anything closer than were you guys launched Saturday.

Give it a try...

It still looks like a 3 mile paddle no matter how you look at it.  Perhaps, we can just fish around a low tide, so we can paddle out on the outgoing tide and return on the incoming.  It sure would make the long paddle more bearable and the landing less muddy.

The Stevens Creek trail right behind Shoreline has trails that lead out to the bay but it would be a long @ss portage followed by a long @ss paddle.  Also you'd be at the mercy of the wind should it pick up.  Moffett recently admitted to heavy contamination of the ponds behind it but clean-up is not scheduled till next year.  Not sure I wanna be paddling around in that stuff.  I never really got out to the Milpitas/Freemont side but there is a Coyote Creek park (at least there is one on the bay trails map I posted a while back)  That spot may be worth looking into.

Bill I was thinking that instead of a trailer you could attach a side cart.  You know the ones that are always in pictures of old bikers with their dog riding in the cart wearing goggles.  Seems like it'd be easier to manuever.

Chuck what day were you thinking of going out?

My schedule is pretty flexible.  I'd like to go with one of you guys since I've never been there before.

As for wheels, if you had something like this....

....you'd be able to rig a rigid towbar to the bow of your kayak to attach to your bike's seat post.  I'm sure it'll work.

After looking at the Terra server map and my GPS I would guestimate the paddle length from launch to fishing to be between 4 and 5 miles. My GPS batteries ran low about halfway back to the launch and at that point I had paddled 9.98 miles. I paddled around while I was out there but I also did not get the full track back, so I think that is a pretty good number.

Not a short paddle.  :smt009

It looks like a launch from Mountain View would be about a 4 mile paddle across the open bay assuming you could get bay access from Shoreline.

Here are some bike trail maps http://baytrail.abag.ca.gov/map.html#Maps as you can see there is a bike trail that runs right out to the power lines. I think the bike trail is about as long as the paddle so pick your poison.

The tides look pretty good Saturday to head out in the morning to catch the tail end of an outgoing, then fish the incoming:

2005-02-13  3:55 AM PST   9.47 feet  High Tide
2005-02-13  6:59 AM PST   Sunrise
2005-02-13  9:43 AM PST   Moonrise
2005-02-13 11:01 AM PST   1.37 feet  Low Tide
2005-02-13  4:20 PM PST   7.32 feet  High Tide
2005-02-13  5:45 PM PST   Sunset
2005-02-13 10:46 PM PST   1.76 feet  Low Tide
2005-02-13 11:29 PM PST   Moonset

Art do you still have John's business card? We should give him a call and see about launching Saturday.

If the bike trail is sufficiently wide, I think I could pull my kayak behind my bike no problem with the wheels I've got.  I'd have to build a new pvc part though.  Lately I've just been tying the end of the kayak right to the axle, and that works ok for shortish portages.
