I took the rat-squad up to Blue Lakes which is a nice little spring fed lake about 20 minutes from the house.  Hoped to do some quality kiddie fishing.  As we got there the wind came up and it got down right chilly, but my Jr. fishing team was determined to fish.  My 11 year old son Chris paddled a tandem with my 6 year old daughter in the bow.  I put my 2 year old in between my legs in an x-factor.

Captain Chris is possibly the worlds youngest kayak fishing guide...http://www.kayaksportfishing.com/phpBB2/album_pic.php?pic_id=538

It didn't take long.  Chris and Paige were smiling from ear to ear...http://www.kayaksportfishing.com/phpBB2/album_pic.php?pic_id=539

Score!

We fished a little longer and my youngest caught another one that I helped her with, all in all the kids had a blast, but it just got too cold.http://www.kayaksportfishing.com/phpBB2/album_pic.php?pic_id=542

A great afternoon on the water with the kids.

Sean, you're kids are lucky to have a dad like you.  As a kid, I had to learn everything on my own or from friends.  I guess that's why I'm still trying to make up for my deprived childhood.  Sorry for the sob story.

I am also lucky to have kids that LOVE kayak fishing.  If my wife needs me to get out of the house with all of the kids I'm can still go fishing.  Watching kids catch fish is fun, their faces tell the whole story.  My 6 year old was so stoked when she hooked up, and was getting worked by a 14" rainbow.  It doesn't get any better.

When you have em'...take em with you.

Dang... that looks like a blast.  I can't wait till Carson is old enough to hold a fishing pole.  Those kids really had some fun out there.

Erik-you won't have to wait too long.  Chris started fishing when he was 2. I used to take him bobber fishing at a lake in Marin.  Even at that age, they figure the basics out pretty fast.  Just be prepared to get outfished, last year in Mex Chris' 38" rooster smoked anything daddy caught  :smt064

Hana-thanks!  Over the years I have reduced my trout trolling combo to simply dragging basic hardware.  One fish came on a small gold kastmaster, the other came on small blue/silver Little Cleo.  Either of these are generally deadly, especially in the Sierras.

Teaching your kid to fish is a great joy, but Sean's right -- they will quickly outfish you.  Here's pics to prove it...

My son Kyle catching a 4' Bronze Whaler off Maui...

His Mahi-Mahi is substantially bigger than mine...

But, the scariest thing is that at 12 years old, his shoe size is bigger than mine.  I won't be able to show him who's really boss for much longer...

Good choice Sean! However, if I may make a suggestion - change the treble hooks to single siwash hooks....why?
1) safer for kids to handle
2) they snag less
3) easier to release small fish on a single hook - less harm to the fish as well.
4) a treble hooked fish that is netted - can be a disaster (tangle galore)

just my 2 cents.....

Keep those reports and pics coming!  :smt023
