I'm heading down to SLO next weekend to fish Saturday July 16th somewhere. Open to suggestions. If I'm by myself I'll probably launch from Avila as it seems like an easy lauch from what I remember back in college.

Company welcome.

Kevin

Never actually fished out of the (I think Dave has) but the San Simeon launch looked like a piece of cake when I was there. It is in the cove in the state park area. The place looks like it would be great for rockfish. Watch out for the wind though it started howling onshore everyday I was there.

You've got a few good optiont down there-Avila, Montan De Oro, Cambria, Luffingwell and San Simeon, all offering some good rockfish opportunities. I would give Luffingwell a shot-there are often some big halibut found in the shallows around the kelp this time of year.
Livin tha pirates life full time! Catchin big cbass in tha kelp all summer long Have fun, live well, conserve the resource, and ask me about my secret fishing spots. but I probably won't tell you, cuz their secret!

Kevin,

I lived in SLO from 78-96 and kayaked there quite a bit. Only fished there once though, in the kelp beds just south of Avila beach and north of Pirates. Caught a few kelp bass. But I wasn't really set up for fishing at the time. SIK and a baitcaster bungied to the deck.

If I recall correctly, you can't launch directly from Avila, at least South of the Pier. By regulation, not due to any peculiarity of the beach or waves. Of course it's been a while. You might have to either launch from Port San Luis, or Avila right by San Luis Creek.

Also, you probably know that what Bill says about San Simeon also applies to Avila Beach and Port San Luis. The wind line is right there at the point, and it can just HONK there in the afternoons. Or be just like a lake...

Have fun.
