The more your hands hurt from fishing all day , the happier I am. It is kinda like knowing you had  great day fishing by the soreness in my hands from getting spined! :smt044

Some rockfish are worse than others. Browns are the absolute worst.

Take Benadryl for sure. The other thing the old timers do is take the eyeball of the fish that spined you squish it and rub it on the sting.

We don't have them around here, but quillbacks are worse than browns!!  the benadryl idea is prety good!

I've caught a quillback out of shelter cove.  They are fairly common out of crescent city.

just lip grip them.
A good day can be measured by how chewed your thumb is.

Lol, yeah

Sandpapery thumb and fingertips from lipping them, and mini wolverine slices from ling gill rakers

If I get quilled, I def. get an allergic bump reaction that can suck for days.  Sometimes finger stiffness.  Gotta lip them with confidence and not get stuck :smt005

Yeah, I agree with Bushy on this. I got stabbed by quillback several times and the pain lasted couple of days. Other species last 30 min to a few hours. Maybe it is different by people.

ive taken too many quillback spines to the leg through the gunny sac. if a person on the boat keeps one i offer to break the spines off with my pliers once they stop thrashing around. They snap off like twigs. Nice bit of meat off them tho

I go with gloves but the fish clip does create space between you and the spines. Usually when I get poked  I'm moving to fast and rushing it. Small price to pay, part of the adventure :)
