My name is Mike McGuinness (mikemcg). I have recently gotten into spearfishing and am pretty much hooked. After some limited success around home on the Westside of Santa Cruz, I hooked up with Big Jim (best mentor ever) and friends on a few outings down to the Carmel area.  I have been using a Rob Allen 70 cm rail gun and recently got hooked up with a 13' Cobra Navigator kayak with depth finder and GPS.

I am looking forward to Ab diving in Albion in August for the first time. I am still getting comfortable with free diving and learning/improving each time I go out. I been getting mostly blue and black rockfish with a few lingcod and cabezon.  I work as a firefighter, so my schedule is flexible and changes. I am available to dive on weekdays and weekends with those that might want to go out. I have been very impressed with how friendly and encouraging everyone I have met in this new sport has been and I am looking forward to being a part of the spearfishing community/brotherhood. Thanks!

Nice dude!!

I met Mike through his wife who I knew through Team in Training. She is an awesome woman, so when she asked if I wanted to take her husband out diving I figured he couldn't be that bad.

 :smt002

Turns out Mike is super comfy in the water already from his time surfing,  and on his first day out with me and fuzz he blasted a very nice cabbie!!!

 :smt004

Next time out he takes down his first Ling, first limit of RF and gets put on a Zilla of a 35+ inch beast that he stoned at 30 feet!

 :smt007

He has already met fuzz, dpshim, fishmaster1, icecold chuck and a few others...figured if we didn't scare him off he was all good.

 :smt002 :smt005

Brian1976 hooked him up with a great Cobra yak, and I'm looking forward to seeing him pop abalone and uni and shoot some nice fish and have FUN with us all at Albion for his first NCKA event!!!

Welcome aboard Mike!

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

Thanks Jim!

Mike

My pleasure Mike.

You're a great guy with an awesome family, a firefighter, and fun to paddle and hang out and dive with.

You're perfect NCKA material, and I'm looking forward to many more shared adventures in the future.

You can see Mike's big ling towards the end of this vid...this thing was a dragon!!!

Sincerely,

Jim

Welcome to the board from another newb here.  Let me know if you ever need a dive buddy or at least hope to see you OTW.  Stay safe and keep slaying 'em.
