After an awesome first class and at the request of several NCKA members, MBK will offer our second Rig/Rescue/Surf for Kayakfishing Class from 9AM to 5PM on Saturday September 19, 2009. Myself and Holokai, MBK resident surf kayak guru and instructor teacher, will co-teach the class.
The class costs $110 per person and will be limited to the first eight clients who sign up.We had to bump the rate a bit because we added more time to effectively teach and practice the surf session. We felt a maximum four to one instructor to client ratio would be safer in the surf zone and you would get more personalized instruction.

The class will include: kayaks, paddles, helmets, wetsuits, paddle jackets and PFD, if you don't already have your own. Sorry, no discount for bringing your own equipment as you are primarily paying for instructor's time at a reduced rate from all our other classes already.

We will cover rigging a fishing kayak for saltwater fishing, paddle stokes and bracing, practice self-recovery (self rescue),and launching and landing in the surf.We will even get a chance to practice side surfing.

MBK is a great area to demo boats and test your skills in the surf. The surf pretty much gets incrementally larger as you paddle north toward the hotel. This would be a great intro for beginners and a refresher for vets with tips on launching and landing at technically challenging surf launches from expert instructors.

This is NOT an actual fishing class (Allen Bushnell (scallen) has those covered through MBK), so leave rods and tackle at home unless you plan to fish before or after the class. You may want to bring your own surf wetsuit (I will be wearing a 4/3 mm full suit) or dry suit. NO hip or chest waders please. You may also outfit and bring thigh braces for your kayak.

Call MBK at 1-800-649-5357 and tell them you want to register for Aaron and Holokai's surf and safety for kayakfishing class. Thanks!

Same day as the HMB tourny?

Ya, There is a ton of events happening around that time and it was the only day I was free.If you can't make it because of the tourney I understand and I'll try to schedule one for Oct. and maybe Nov. (when the surf is bigger :smt002).This is a small class anyway and we're opening it to the public. We already have a few dudes signed up who couldn't make the first one.

Right on.

I'll definitely be there on the 19th. I've never caught a fish in HMB anyway.  :smt002

Looks like we'll get a bit of the NW swell for this class...

SAT...N WINDS 5 TO 10 KT...BECOMING W. WIND WAVES LESS THAN
2 FT. NW SWELL 4 TO 6 FT. PATCHY FOG.

Last I heard, we only had 5 guys signed up, which should be cool.I capped enrollment at eight for this session. With two instructors for surf zone practice, there will be time for some personalized coaching and practice.

If you have any questions about the class shoot me a PM. :smt006

My wife and i will be there.  Gotta go buy some booties and underwear today.  I gotta learn how to land in the surf-I'm such a 'tard  when it come to that- I even crashed last month in San Diego at San Elijo beach.  For anyone attending, I hope you don't hurt yourself by laughing too hard while your watching me.  I think I'll be a challenge for the instructors!

Maybe I'll get the most improved award by the end???

a little unsolicited plug:

I took the first offering of this course and thought the least useful part was towards the end when we were being taught to side surf in.  This last weekend during a surf landing, my yak got sideways, normally sealing my fate.  But right before the rollover, my body (not my brain) remember the little hip flip to the side and redistribution of weight.  To my surprise, I landed cool as can be and dry.  This stuff works people!
