I like to launch before sunrise most of the time. Was wondering if there is a light that is Coast Guard approved. If so is there one better than the other.

Paddlecraft underway only need a flashlight or headlamp that can be seen by conflicting traffic in time to avoid a collision. Carry a whistle too.

If you are anchored and in a place where other vessels normally operate  you need a 360° white light.

I often launch in pitch black where there are other boats around. I use this light, along with a headlight:

https://www.austinkayak.com/products/7483/YakAttack-VisiCarbon-Pro-Light-CPM.html

That light seems to get the job done, but, it's among my least favorite kayak things. IMHO, it's ridiculously over priced, the pole is too short, and the pole is way too weak (I've snapped it twice and had to cut off the broken parts).

There has got to be something better, and I too would be interested to know what other people are using.

I got an ATV flag. Then I used a super twist tie from Home Depot to attach a Fantasea Line dive light to the flag pole.

I got an ATV flag. Then I used a super twist tie to attach a waterproof dive light to the flag pole.

I basically do this for early am seabass jaunts.
I clip a light to my bait rod while paddling to the grounds.

I also picked up a magnetic mount LED from NRS that gives me a choice of 360degree white, 2/3 red/green (for port/starboard) or 1/3 red, 1/3 green, 1/3 white.
I liked that the magnetic mount is designed to hold through a kayak hull. It held through several too-early surf launches.

I also go out hours before sun up. I put these on the front handle of my PA14. cheap, easy and bright enough for other boaters to see. They also make them in white and I have 2 of them for inside the boat. Also I use the lighted viz a flag and have a few flashlights/headlamp stored just incase. Never can have 2 much lighting when there are motorized vessels hauling ass to their spots.

I don’t recommend red and green nav lights on a kayak. There’s no rule against it, but your lights are communicating to other vessels. If you look like a boat under power you will be expected to act like one.

Interesting point, DK, I hadn't thought of it from that perspective.

That's a good point. I'd also try to get the lights up higher off the deck, so they are remain visible in a modest swell.

I posted a description of a 7' tall safety flag pole with a Navisafe safety light and a large flag which I made with an inexpensive heavy Walmart fishing rod at http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=15155.msg164358#msg164358.

Anybody got an appropriate light that can be controlled remotely (preferably by an app on an iPhone)? I'd like to mount a light to the top of the mast on my AI, but don't want to have to unstep the mast just to turn off the light...
