I started wondering about rockfish pokes.  I've noticed some subspecies hurt me way worse than others.  Specifically browns andthe quillbacks up in Alaqska.  Google search was not easy.  Everyone wants to talk about the sexy scorpion fish or stonefish....

I did find one abstract though with some good info.  The quillback and the brown are the only rockfish with toxin in al of their dorsal spines.  And they both have a high ratio ofof toxin glands to spine length.

Here's the chart that told me what I already know.  Browns and quillback pokes are the WORST.

That is really interesting. Thanks for doing the footwork on that!

Browns & Quillbacks were the most venomous of the SIX species they studied. I imagine there are many other types of rockfish that are equally venomous (coppers always get my with their head spines).

OK, I bet  browns and quillbacks are top two out of all sebastes rockfish.  My big surprise was browns rating more venomous tha quilback.

But, you are on.  One burrito of choice is the bet, and you do the research!

No way that was due to a rockfish spine. Poison oak, 100%.

I’ve got a knuckle that reminds me of a particular rockfish quill every time I knock on a door.

Thanks for the update. i too just got over a minor fish poke. It took 40 days of antibiotics twice a day. The first few days were not fun. My finger was not a pretty sight.  There were some sleepless nights too. Note to self: It's always good to have a doctor see it before the weekend comes around.

If you know you got poison oak oil on your skin shower cold first to wash it off without opening your pores with hot water. It isn't fun but I think it helps!

So gnarly. I agree it looks like poison oak but who knows, glad he's ok now!

It's an allergic reaction which resulted in hives.
Not necessarily caused by poison oak although it looks exactly the same.
Sorry your friend has to endure this.
Not sure anything could have been done after the injury to prevent this either.
On a side note, I get poison oak...BAD. I found that after exposure if I wipe the infected area with a clorox wipe I don't break out. I think the alcohol in the wipe removes the oils. Just my experience. Used to get PO bad at Lake Sonoma. Have not had one spot on me since doing this after every hunt.
