Last weekend I was fishing with friends at Limekiln and had one rod set up with 20# power pro with egg sinker followed by a snap swivel and 4 foot mono leader to frozen nose hooked sardine.  The rig was killing the Cabazon.  The last one I caught was about 20 inches long and the power pro broke just as I lifted the fish over the kayak.  I was lucky as the fish landed in the boat along with the leader, snap swivel and short length of power pro.  The egg sinker was gone.  I should point out here that I had lined the inside hole of the egg sinker with a small plastic coffee stirring straw and melted the ends smooth with a lighter to make a sort of bearing to minimize abrasion from roughness inside the sinker (this tip was passed on to me by an old time shore fisher and seemed like a good idea).

Anyway, what is the common wisdom regarding sliding sinkers and egg sinkers on braided line?  Is it recommended?  Should I have used a sinker slider to better protect the line or was the break more likely the result of abrasion on rocks or other things in the subsurface rather than the plastic lined egg sinker rubbing on it?  Since I got the fish it was not a big deal (just a lost sinker) but if it had been a big ling or butt, I probably would have lost it.  What do others use or recommed for sliding weights on braided line?

etienne, you could always make a short length of wire or heavy mono butted with swivels at either end and put the sinker on that.

when I perch fish I use 8lb solar berkley XT (the abrasion resistant stuff) mainline real visible. but I put my sinker on a 10" length of 15lb big game. and my leader is 10lb big game mono. usually the leader goes first.

I use a sinker slider "slido" on doubled 30lb braid and it seems okay but I do check the sinker slider and clean it up with a file or something if it looks like it has any sharp parts on it.

sand tends to get in the sinker hole and that can cause abrasion not to mention the sinkers vary in their smoothness.

I think your best choice is a short 10" length of wire with the egg sinker on that and butted with swivels if you don't like to gamble on tackle failure.

Well if you think about it...

What is the first part of your rig that hits the rocks first as you jig up and down into the rocks?

Its your main line, caught between the rock and your sinker.

If you want to alleviated this problem but still get into the rocks, use a 3 way w/ a breakaway leader for your sinker.

A little more cumbersome, but you'll save wear on the parts that need to hold up when there's fish on and only occaissionally retie a new sinker for the inevitable snags.

Just switch to a torpedo.  I use a uni (5 to 6 wraps) on each eye. 4 to 5oz. 30 lb. braid.  No mono I think it is a waste of time.
