Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Capitola by the Sea?
« on: August 23, 2022, 08:58:59 PM »
Am headed to my 55th high school reunion (class of ‘67) Soquel High School, on the 17th of September. I grew up in Capitola during my high school years.

Weather permitting, I would like to do a day of kayak fishing out of Capitola on the 18th. May rent a yak from the pier unless someone has another suggestion?

TIA

For Trade / Bike is SOLD
« on: March 21, 2019, 10:00:34 AM »
Long shot here(?), but here goes;

I am looking to sell or trade my 2005 Yamaha FJR 1300a Sport touring motorcycle with 66+ K miles, for a fairly recent (2017 or newer) Hobie pedal kayak (Mirage drive with reverse is a requisite). Asking price for the bike is $3000 if I sell it. I was the original owner. Bike always kept inside and is in top touring condition. Will provide more details upon inquiry.

Craftsmen's Corner / OK Prowler foot rests
« on: June 10, 2018, 07:18:26 AM »
I am long legged and 250+. After fitting a rudder kit on my Prowler 15, I found I couldn't rest my feet anywhere except astride outside the hull due to interference with the steering pedals. Fortunately, it is a relatively narrow boat, but after a few hours of paddling/fishing my hips start to feel it. I needed to come up with an alternative foot rest.

Pictures say the most;

Rough prototype

Rough fit

General Talk / Shark Shield question?
« on: November 21, 2017, 09:26:33 AM »
For those of you that deploy Shark Shield from your kayak;

- do you use one of  the forward scupper holes so you can retract the stinger when beaching?

- or do you just run it out one of the rear holes and trust that it clears when beaching?

I could see using a forward scupper hole  and retracting the stinger, but what about getting a line tangled around it when landing a fish?

Craftsmen's Corner / Rack for 2 kayaks
« on: March 25, 2017, 08:04:41 AM »
Some details follow:

After some time making measurements and sketches, I purchased 3 - 8' lengths of 1" x 6" and a couple 8' -  2" x 4"s and got to work cutting a drilling the rungs'

Bolted the rungs to the upright 2' x 4"s

Cut up a Tow strap into 4 smaller straps and sewed loops at the ends.

Attached the straps to the rungs.

Lastly, bolted up the racks to a vertical wall surface and hung one boat up.

Craftsmen's Corner / Auto Oh' Shit handles for Prowler 16
« on: March 24, 2017, 08:56:48 AM »
Says it all above.

I asked about any replacement alternatives to the fiber handles on the side of my kayak in Kayak Rigging the other day. "Oysterboy" suggested I look at Grab handles from an auto source. I was driving to town in my Nissan Xterrra, looked up, and Vilola = there they were. Went to the local auto salvage, asked for a duplicate pair of Xterra grab handles and got some. Results follow.

2000 Nissan Xterra Grab handles.

After removing the rivets and the old handles, made some spacers (out of plexiglass) and siliconed them to the hull to make the detents flush to the hull.

There is only a single hole in the Oh' Shit handles, so one rivet hole per side got siliconed closed. I used 1/4 - 20 through bolts and reinforced the inner hull with an ABS backing plate and steel washers when attaching the handles to the hull with nuts.

Will try this weekend

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Visibility of fish finder screen?
« on: March 21, 2017, 08:09:09 AM »
Went lake fishing on a sunny day last Saturday, and could barely make out my Mark 4's screen even in the shade. I "think" I had the light level as high as it could/would go? but...still not much joy! So, does anybody have a suggestion besides having my eyes changed? I wear polarized glasses and am wondering "if"?  a piece of polarized mylar fixed to the screen face would increase light contrast? Perhaps a neoprene shade in front of the screen, extending toward my eyes a foot or so(?) from the front of the meter would help provide more shade?

Any thoughts/ideas?

TIA

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Grab handles?
« on: March 21, 2017, 07:33:07 AM »
I just pulled one of the side grab handles off of my Prowler 16. Is there a hardware re-placement that isn't just fiber strapping and rubber?

TIA

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Trailer maintenance
« on: October 28, 2016, 07:06:53 PM »
On my way back from Simply Fishing at Ocean Cove north of Jenner, I took some road(?) between Monte Rio and the Petaluma/Bodega Bay road. My trailer broke, and I had to McGiver it together to drive the remaining 200+ mile home to Morro Bay.

Note: Pics above deleted due to Photobucket changeover

- Thin mild steel frame is nearly toast after 20+ years parked near the coast in salt air
- Kayaks drain a good deal of salt water when they are loaded up
- I am looking for a galvanized boat trailer as a starter platform
- I like the idea of having the kayak(s) traveling a low as possible for ease in loading
- gear box should be above the kayaks for ease of access.

Ocean Kayaks / T15 rudder ?
« on: October 21, 2015, 08:21:05 PM »
Hello -

I have an "ancient" OK Prowler (2008 hull).

It needs some steering help via a rudder or skeg? ie; difficult to steer against side wind/side current.

I saw a mod somewhere(?), where some guy (who = dunno)? put a T15 rudder system "atop" his hull rather than "behind" in the factory set, screw alignment on the stern.

Is this mod available or is it customized?
