Yes you have been in the water with sharks if you surf in Nor Cal. Ask anyone who flies over the coast (IE coast Guard) and ask them how amny times there are sharks within 30 feet of the surfers lined up for a break..They will tell you the dark shapes are closer than you think.

Now that's really creepy  :smt103

But now wouldn't the coast guard alert the surfers if they do in fact see the sharks / or shark lurking below?  :smt017

What really freaked me out was that I was fishing at Linda Mar last year just before the sun went down and I remember seeing a few surfers (women) heading out for a night of surfing  :smt118 Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't sharks more active at night?

I wouldn't expect a coast guard alert.  They have enough to worry about, not to mention that there'd still be a number of people who wouldn't leave the water.  That little 6"x6" sign with a shark outline on most beaches is sufficient.  :smt001

Mr. Matt, thanks for the confirmation.  Are you CG?

White sharks are more of a visual predator, so they may be more active during the day.  I think seals are day critters too, in which case GW probably wouldn't be hunting them at night even if they are up and about.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.
