A few years ago DFW changed the regs on sturgeon, went to a single barbless hook, banned snares, changed the slot to 40" to 60" (from 46 to 66) and changed the measurement from total length to fork length.

With the shape of a sturgeons tail a 66" tail length fish is gonna be pretty much the same size as a 60" fork length. And pretty much the  same for the lower end 46 total length vs 40 fork length.  The reg change didn't much change the size of the fish in the slot, just the slot numbers and how you measure the fish.

I looked back in AOTY history and it looks like the 3.75 pt/in didn't change with the reg.

So for arguments sake let's say I caught a top of the slot 60" fork length fish my point total would be 225.  But (same fish) under the old reg would be about 66" (total length) and yield 247.5 points.

Seems to me the pt/in should have been adjusted when the reg changed.

At this point in time everybody IS EQUAL so my 60"sturgeon will equal the same number of points as your 60" sturgeon,

BUT for historical continuity that fish is pretty much equal to a 66" total length fish but now yields less points just because the measurement method changed (not the actual size of the fish).

With all that said, did I miss something, am I mistaken and am I the only one that cares?

And NO at this time I do not have a sturgeon to enter.

Under the old regs the max pts for a sturgeon would have been 247.5 now it's 225. My suggestion for historical continuity would be the change the pts/in from 3.75 to 4.125 (or so) so that the max points available from the top of the slot fish is the same as it used to be.

I thought about suggesting total length for AOTY sturgeon entries but that gets away from the DFW regs and that's just a can of worms.

Probably not good grammar to ask 3 questions just separated by commas, my bad.

So you show me a sturgeon entered by Adam 3 years ago using fork length and 3.75 pts per inch,

Is that supposed to show me that I missed something?
Or that I made a mistake?
Or that no one cares?

In the spirit of all the indepth discussions on AOTY rules, seems like a pretty short answer.

It was 3.5 pts before. 3 before that. It changed to 3.75 in 2013.  198 was the top at one point in time at 66".

Before I wrote my longwinded post I looked back a some sturgeon from the past and found that what I was looking at was all calculated out at 3,75pts/in, even back to 2008.

So thanks for the info.

which makes me wonder is the database constructed so that the new point value (3.75) applied to all the old entries?

See below 2008 66" = 247.5.  (247.5/66=3.75)

Not sure why the screen I see on AOTY >Species>Sturgeon shows what is does but it still calcs out to 3.75 pts/in for all the old entries I checked,

I can't find a screen that looks like the one you put up.

But I'm done with the question about the point/inch factors sounds good to me, Thanks for the rundown on point history.

Still leaves the difference in views though
