Title: Albion Open 2015 Official tourney thread
Post by: ravensblack on May 10, 2015, 05:35:18 PM
Ok. Here we go. The forms are up. I will fill in some details soon. The format will be the four original specie. Lingcod, Cabezon, Greenling and Rockfish. You may have three fish in your bag. No duplicates. The heaviest bag wins the tournament. There will be plaques for 1st 2nd and 3rd. Made by Sean Walker/ Piscean. These will be colorful and highly sought after items. There will be a special prize for the heaviest salmon and the longest abalone. We are not sure about next year at all right now. The State is planning to replace the bridge possibly so this may be the last Albion. There will be a raffle. We went this year with a modification of the original artwork from 2010. The proceeds after cost from the raffle and the clothing sales will go to a program called , Circle of Friends. This is a nationwide program in high schools that help students with learning disabilities. Help is provided by other students. The decision to have this group as our charity this year came from Paul Lebowitz who lost his son James earlier this year. James was involved in the program at his high school. In this way we will honor James and Paul who has done so much for the kayak fishing industry and he is one of us. All registrations must be in hand by July 3rd at the latest. There will be no registration at the event this year to simplify things. Please join us this year. Thanks, Craig and Linelle.

Please send along with your payment your name, address, NCKA handle and phone number. Please. If I  am not able to figure out your clothing order I need to be able to get in touch. You need to fill out the registration form AND the waiver. Mail payments to
Craig Davis
125 Rocca Dr.
Petaluma, Ca.   94952

The clothing will be black in color and printed by a local shop who also did the printing in 2010. Which is still holding up very well. I apologize for the issues you had in 2012 and 2014.

The tournament will be on Saturday August 8th. Paddling out anytime you want to in the AM. returning to the weigh station at the fish cleaning table no later than 1 PM. No latecomers will be allowed.

The potluck ( it wont be like last year, that is why there are no big dollar prizes for the tourney) Will be at 5 Pm on Saturday and the awards ceremony and raffle will be shortly there after.

My hope this year is that the tournament returns to what we knew in the past as a family and fun time get together. I am hoping for decreased attendance by those just seeking out prizes and money. Sorry if that offends anyone. Too many people showed up with out bringing items to the potluck and partaking. Thank you for your consideration on this. Last year was the first time ever that I saw that happen at an NCKA potluck and I think its my fault for giving away a grand for first place.

Help me out here.  What does the potluck have to do with the BIG dollar prizes?

Will be there with multiple potluck items. Maybe not in quantity but in the spirit of the event. Thank You Craig...

He is referring to two different issues.

I hate to say, that is something that irks me. I feel that if you partake in the pot luck, you should contribute something. Even if it's minimal. Been to gathering's where people show up empty handed and even have several people in tow.

Am I just getting old and grouchy ?  :smt001

What I believe happened is this and its not two separate issues. It was well known that cash prizes were being given to the top 3. Soma. 1,000.00, 500.00 and 250.00. We had 40 sign up for registration on the day before the event. Mostly by people I had never seen before.  Mostly single guys looking for the cash. I saw people load up on food that brought nothing to the potluck. In fact the winner sat by my trailer drinking bottled beer and in the morning they had left a pile of beer bottles for ME to pick up. So I don't really give a crap if those kind of folks stay home. If you would like more than that send me a PM. Thanks Soma hope to see you there. :smt006 :smt003

+ 2 my whole family loves this function!  IMHO, if you need more explaining than what has already been said, from Craig - don't  come! Albion  is his event to run!!! All the folks  that take on the challenge  to give US an event, have too many people  constantly  questioning  them on why this and why that; $hit just don't  go if you don't  like it. Also, don't  complain about it  either, most of us don't  want to  hear it! Thank you  Craig & Linelle and all the others who host events.

I totally agree with Craig.  Let's get back to the Albion's prior to last year.  We should all be watchful of the potluck and "uninvite" those who choose not to bring food.  If you come empty handed, you eat somewhere else!  If you don't like the rules or the direction of the tournament, just remember:  Attendance is optional.

I ask a legitimate question and you counter with a PM accusing me of talking trash?  And you are not talking trash when you single out one individual who you accuse of leaving a pile of bottles that you HAD to pick up?

Before someone gets lynched, please keep in mind that some folks bring food that is handed out to others just before the potluck.

Good point.  No lynchings but a watchful eye might be helpful.  I sense that we all know who participates.

I totally love it!  Priorities are straight - More food and less prizes!   :wav:  Everybody wins!  My son Jack keeps asking when we are going back to Albion and I told him soon.  He loved crabbing off the dock catching undersized crabs last year and this year I hope to get him out on the yak to catch some fish in the cove.  To me, that's what Albion is all about.

If you don't like the crowd at an "Open", change it to an invitational or a sponsorship like GS.

Calling it an Open and offering $1,000 cash prize is going to have a predictable result.  Lowering the prize element or reverting to a raffle drawing should help.

The potluck thing is tough.  Having a quid pro quo raises a sticky legal problem, it is hard to police, and it invites confrontation.  Of course people who dont contribute something to the event and are there just to take take take are a drain on the experience.  People can and do contribute in a lot of different ways though.  Let conscience be their guide.

Either way, I missed it last year because I was on an airplane coming back from my hawaii trip.  I will be there this year and I'm looking forward to it.

You're the one that doesn't like what happened, not me.  If you don't want constructive feedback, fine, whatever.  Its a free country.  Good luck with your tournament.

I must say last year at times had the vibe of a big BASS tournament with everyone focused on the prizes , that vibe is why I quit BASS tournament fishing. It was a sight seeing people salivating over the prize tent on the days before the start.

For the most part I do not eat at potlucks , that being said I will say the line of people for the amount of food seemed WAY EFn crazy ,that is a uninvolved eyes  being honest .Crazy I am but I have a personal issue with waiting in a long line for food on a tray so I and the group I was with  just ate at our campsite then attended the drawings ,I had two loosing raffle tickets that did not qualify for a refund ......

Thanks for calming it down Craig now I am excited about it for 2015 and hoping I will be in attendance with my lovely better half this year. :smt012

Albion is my favorite event every year, family friendly, everyone together in one big happy campground!  Happy to be there this year and I'm most definitely not worried about any prizes.  However if we could find a way to convince KZ to make gaffs again  :smt002

I did not eat at the potluck last year. Ariel, G-Whiz, Yakhopper, ReelKnots, and Cabeza kept the food flowing at the campsite all weekend.

Which brings up the question: is G-Whiz going to stage another BBQ judging competition? Maybe another reason for a full stomach.  :smt003

True that Bret. Me and my son also had a good 'ol time as we caught crabs from the dock and watched them scurry back into the water. It was awesome to see the anticipation in his eyes as I bought up the large hunk of squid with crabs hanging on. We should get them together, he'll be 5 next month.

As for the potluck deal, in my opinion yea I think that everyone should contribute something. If you cant bring a dish well then help clean up, setup or whatever. There is always something to do, trust me! Last year I met some buzzard who told me about some free beer. I believe it was Don's keg which he crafted. I said, do you know who's beer that is? His reply was, well No, it's free man. Well, yes but... he really didn't like the rest of my "ethics" conversation and immediately left the area. Oh well, so I've got bad PR skills, but it bothered me a little that he didn't even take the time to find the owner of the keg and intro himself or just ask.

I love everything about these events... The family and friends, sense of community and sharing, memories made. But, I also like the competition, I really do, the chance to win $ or a prize, bragging rights, ect. I also love the bounty I bring home to feed my family, friends and neighbors.

Craig I think you've put together a tournament recipe that works well. Sure, you're going to get a few bad seeds and issues but those "buzzards" are easily recognized and the "family" will take care of it's own. Fagit-ah-bout-it.

Mike

PS - Designs going to be killer on those thick hoodies!

Whoa man, I had no idea that all happen last year, we didn't make it. Some people just suck! Wasn't planning on making it to Albion this year either Cause of Are ALASKA trip the following week. Albion is definitely one of my Favorite events and Craig and Linelle do such a kick ass job of making it such a Grand Time for everyone.  I could personally give a Rats about Prizes, but if this may be the Last Albion, I'm there! Although, some KZ GAFFS and Piscean Plaques would be Nice! :smt003 :smt006

I am very excited for this event. My family has had a house in the town of Mendocino since before I was born. Ill be staying at the house but of course will bringing plenty of food for the potluck. I'm pretty new to Kayak angling so will looking for anyone to take me under their wing.  I do have a dry suit and safety gear. Super excited.

Albion was my first kayak tourney I entered a few years ago and I met so many great people and consider some close friends now. I'll be in one of the rental trailers starting Thursday so swing by and have a beer with me and we'll go out and catch some fish or have fun trying.

Good call Craig - I'm all for getting back to the fish-n-chill, fish hard-have fun spirit at the roots of NCKA gatherings
Agreed... Looking forward to showing off and sharing our camp grub with everyone at the potluck. The cash thing does things to people, myself not exempted... brings out the "gotta win" side that I'm not all that comfortable with. Gonna play for fun :kick

I loved it last yr. It was my first and I brought food. I Love to carry my end of a deal plus extra. If any help is needed please don't be afraid to ask. I'll ask you Craig if I can help some where. My wife liked Spooners so that is where our camp will be. Site 33 same as last years. I can't dive due to physical conditions so I can't provide Abalone. But I will find something I'm sure. So I'm sending my fee's tomorrow so you can plan. I have never placed in a tournament and do not care if I win anything. If I get lucky so be it. I feel I won just by being there.

I do not know what schooners policy is I have spot 33 that should have room for a tent. I know it isn't at the main camp ground but it is quite if you like to get away from the noise. If you like the Noise walk down there and come back. That is the best I can do. There were tents and trailers in the same sight last yr. So I guess it is ok. So far just me the wife and maybe the granddaughter.

Which brings up the question: is G-Whiz going to stage another BBQ judging competition?

I'm all about the "chill"! love the chance to fish and but to me, it's not all about the tourney; I just love to hang with my bros!

I love cooking in the outdoors, seeing friends chilling around the camp and having a good time enjoying the company of good friends. This is why I attend... and that's the reason for the BBQ cook-off (and to take care of those helping with the event)!

So, yes... I will be having another challenge this year, Friday before the event....  this year's cut has not been decided, but will determine as the event draws closer.....   GB2, I got my eye on you!!!

This year, the HAC camp is directly across from the event area, trail cams will be watching you at potluck time! :smt044

Craig... thanks for all your hard work!!!!

Our tournaments are not democratic--they are autocratic.   The members running these tournaments are free to do what they want.  They freely give hours of their time, and their family's time also.     If you don't agree with how the event is run, you are free to run your own event.  Now is not the time to start complaining or causing consternation.  Come and enjoy your fellow kayakers and laugh while you can.

The overflow is along the fence on the right as you enter the campground. Past the trailers where we are set up Andy. There is room there but no electricity or water. You have to carry water from a spigot. Or run a hose from some ones site.  You can probably just horn in somewhere bro. PM me ok?

Craig, just keep doing what you been doing.
Always stand-up. Always top notch.
You can't please everyone.
Nevermind the naysayers.

The first Albion that Sean put on in '09 was my very first NCKA event. It hooked me. Or it may have been the deep fried cheese cake and red velvet cake, but either way, I was hooked. Aaron (piski) whom I'd met shortly previous, introduced me to the crew that to this day I almost exclusively fish (and hunt) with. You took the event to its potential. Kudos to you.

Albion is special to a lot of us. Please leave the negativity at home.

This will be my third time this year. I usually go solo. I don't have the necessary equipment to cook. What I do is pick up quality deserts from a local bakery and I never say I made it. I don't go just for the pot luck. I always enjoy meeting new people at these tourn.  I got no problem helping someone if there is a need.

Thanks for the suggestion of Schooners, I will check it out.  I am hoping there will be room for all of us at Albion though :)

As for Gyotaku, while the Albion Open is where I credit the idea, it's the Gimme Shelter tourney I coordinate the fish printing event.  Sorry kids!!  Maybe Craig will host it again if enough interest?

One more suggestion to help with the Potluck issue, DON'T provide plates & utensils. I understood that this is how the potluck was run, so we brought our own AND a big plate of fried chicken (BTW - I didn't get any). If freeloaders aren't going to bring food, they likely won't think to bring plates & utensils either.

As a first-timer last year, I was impressed with the event. The T-Shirt design, the raffle, and the camaraderie of the anglers. The potluck was a bummer, because of the freeloaders. I know you're always going to have some, but I think you're moving in a positive direction with downplaying the competition factor.

We're looking forward to fishing hard for "Braggin' Rights!"

". . . downplaying the competition factor."  "We're looking forward to fishing hard for "Braggin' Rights!""  Doesn't bragging rights imply competition?

To all: if you live in the Bay Area, it's overnight service to 949; so you can most likely mail your reg on Thursday and Craig will have it in his hand on Friday.

If you live outside the Bay Area, it's 2 day service and you should mail it by Wednesday...

{Disclaimer: I would get it in tomorrow, just in case there is a problem...}

The best I can do is get mine and Adrienne's in today.  Will there be space in overflow for a small trailer (RPod) that we could get electricity too?  In the past it always seemed like there would be plenty of room and electricity hookup.  We have an extension cord.
Adrienne has been busy and doesn't want to go if we couldn't bring the trailer.

Well you can always post up your willing to split costs on a site... I did and through a members kindness and generosity I was offered a place . Thanks again Rockfish ... Anyway you never know till you try

Planning a year ahead for a kayak tornament is not my priority.  Anyways everytime I have been the overflow is just fine.  Last year the spot we had would have worked fine for the trailer.  Adrienne may not be back from her vacation so I may be going solo. I may keep going south from Albion since it should be perfect timing for me to afford a Socal trip for yellowtail and whatever else is within 5 miles from shore.

Guess you have to read the thread to see that the registration is past due.  Oh well, I guess we will just have to go anyway!

I'm encouraged.  I 'thought' I had a reservation as I called and made one at the earliest possible date.  Then I checked on that a few weeks ago; no record of it with them!  They told me no worries; we won't turn away anyone for the overflow.  Then the report that overflow is filled and, you guessed it; I'm not on that list either!!

So if folks are just gonna show up, then I will too!!  I'm not registered for the tourney because of the inability to get a reservation of any sort, but then it's not about that with me.  I love to fish with the guys at these sorts of events.  I also will have more moola for the raffles or other ways to support the good cause that is the real reason for a tourney anyways.  It's not like I have a chance to win or anything anyways.  Ha!  So, I'll show up and perhaps a day or so earlier to be sure to secure a spot someplace.

Oh, and the potluck!  Gotta come just for that.  Last year I made cheese stuffed, bacon wrapped BBQ'd  jalapeno peppers.  Not sure what I'll make this year though, but it will be tasty.

See ya'll there!

Jerry, sounds familiar.  First week of sign ups, made number three on the waiting list in person.  Called a few weeks later for the status of the waiting list.  Well surprise, surprise!  "We don't know what happened to that waiting list. We don't have you on any waiting list."  Offered to put us on the page long waiting list.  Yeah, right.  Something smells fishy and it isn't just the cleaning station.

Is there anyway for the tournament directors to update page 1 only? There are soooooo many pages in these threads with often no useful information, only people replying that they are coming, etc. It's painful at times!  :smt010

And just what would you have me update? Don't see what you want? Try PMing me with a question. Really?

In the last week the list has gone from 44 people who got their stuff in in a timely manner to 134 people in the last five days. LOL If you missed the deadline its not my fault.

I a very good at procrastinating. But when I really want to do something I do my home work. Made reservations last yr. but he said to just give him my name and he attached it to the calendar. I thought to myself that wasn't going to work I called the 2nd of july and he had it still. I sent money Asap. and that part was covered. when I saw the registration thread I sent money no hassle. Also it made it easy for Craig to plan. We just did a reunion and people waited for the last min. guess what there is a reason to do everything early as people need a count to order food. And many people say they will be there then we spent way to much on food. So next yr if there is one next yr. be considerate And do your part early. Then craig can enjoy the event much more so he will enjoy doing it next yr. I don't know what the rules are at Spooner's Landing about having tents on my RV site. I bet it is ok If you buy their wood from them or a minor fee. I offered before but I must have BO. no one replied.

I'm pretty good at procrastination too.  And though I had read that there wouldn't be registration at the event this year for the many reasons Craig listed, somehow I missed that there was a 7/3 deadline for the registration.  I skimmed the thread and only found one mention of it.  Was it posted elsewhere?

So I'm thinking about renting the $40 "everything you need to ab dive" kit from fort Bragg for Sunday after the tourney. Since it would be our first time going for abs I was thinking Albion with all my fellow ncka-ers would be the perfect environment to learn in. I was wondering if someone could take us under their wing and show us the ropes! We have practiced getting in and out of our kayaks and snorkeling around so we at least have that going for us ;) Thanks!  :smt006

Albion will be the perfect place.  Lots of good divers here, and you guys will be in good company there.  If you kayak out, there are bunch of abs in pretty protected coves.  I am planning to bring my ab-gear, but I am not good swimmer/diver (I can only dive down to 5-6ft)...  Kayak buddy system helps when you ab-dive too.
See you there :smt006

I should be diving at some point every day except tourney day, and maybe then too. I may bring tanks to play for an extended time under also. Anyone want to do a tank dive with me?

the awards are in the finishing stages, but likely won't be ready until this weekend.

Is anyone thinking of attending my art show this weekend who is also going up to Albion? Anyone who wouldn't mind taking on the responsibility of hauling the precious, precious cargo north?

I have a box and packaging for them, all they need is reliable transport.
I'll have cold draft Modelos on hand for anyone who agrees. :smt003

Craig,

I'll be donating a floating extending XL net and rotating gripper from the fine folks at EGO.
I'll also throw in some BransonBaits.com assorted baits.

My son cannot stop talking about catching crabs from the dock! You could say he's excited.

Gonna take run for some salmon Friday morning and hopefully get into them. Heard there were a few caught last weekend in less that 120'.

Not fishing in the tourney but seriously looking to hang out with my NCKA family and introduce you scum's to my new girl Amy.

Is there a countdown going yet.

The main Van Damme campground will no doubt be full, but they have a parking lot right on the beach that allows camping if you are in a self contained RV. It always has room.

Well shoot fire!  For a variety of reasons, mostly work related, I am not able to join you all this year at the Albion Open :smt010

Since Craig is off enjoying Alaska (envy), not sure who to let know Cameron Pascual, Doug Kaber or Jeremy Kingstrom will be picking up my L sweatshirt (paid).

I have sent messages out but would be very appreciative if someone would help me make sure the messages are delivered to:

Rob Knoles site C-13, not coming - thank you very much for the offer to share your campsite!

Cameron Pascual, Doug Kaber, Jeremy Kingstrom site C21, please pick up my L sweatshirt from ????? - thank you!

Have a GREAT time everyone!

So the Coast Gaurd Auxillary will be at the launch ramp on Saturday morning (5am) performing voluntary vessel safety inspection, handing out free whistles, & vessel identification stickers. This is a totally voluntary but I feel well worth the 2-4 minutes to complete. They love kayakers because we usually have more safety gear than boats.

I hope any people are able to take advantage of this and at a minimum get the vessel ID sticker.

So are they going to cite people for going out without every piece of safety gear required by law? Or will they be a permanent fixture at my event from now on? Should everyone make a mad dash to get flares now?

Yes EVERYONE RUN OUT AND GET FLARE GUNS. J/K  :smt044 :smt044 :smt012

This is a voluntary safety check that I have done at ORC and was a no hassle experience. Being it is voluntary you don't have to do it if you don't want to. IT IS NOT MANDATORY. They will not be handing out citations or anything like that so don't be afraid to have the safety check.

I would hope they were at every event because it only brings the level of vessel safety up. But this is your event and that's why I asked permission before setting this up.

See everyone soon

FOOD ON!!

The Results are IN !!!    We all had fun!!!  Too much food in all the camps and at the potluck!!! Matter of fact there was a ton of food left over even after everyone grazed. Fishing was off-the-hook. I have never seen so many BIG LINGS, VERMS, and ASSORTED OTHER HUGE ROCKFISH, ABS, UNI,  and Even a Huge Salmon. The weather was excellent.... flat calm for the experienced and a bit NAUTICAL for the rest.

ps ... a little hint for those who did not get a spot for 2016. There were lots of cancellations of sites, spare room in other sites, and the overflow area. Sign up no matter what...you will find a spot.

My report:

I caught some fish, ate some awesome food, and drank plenty of beer. Met some awesome people and all in all had a great time. Which led to...

A stop on the way home. I went to Denny's in Fort Bragg for breakfast and pulled up a chair at the counter in a very busy restaurant. A few minutes later a salty vet sat down next to me and I had one of those awesome lifetime experiences. I had breakfast with Wally, Delton E Walling, Pearl Harbor survivor and veteran of nearly every major battle in the Pacific Theater in WWII. A total badass and nice guy who could still kick my ass today.

He goes to the reunion most years, has awesome stories, just completed a parachute jump on Lodi a couple months ago, beat up a war protestor disrespecting the flag at age 89 and was sentenced to (lol) anger management, and retired commercial fisherman who still gets out fishing on the salt to this day.

I would have bought his breakfast but I was 4 offers too late.

First time at Albion.  Place is pretty awesome.  Like it was said by everyone else.  Met some cool peeps and ate some awesome food. Too much food.  Fished Friday afternoon for a bit. Conditions Saturday were hella sporty!!  Swells were rollin pretty good.  Got seasick for the first time in my life :smt013.

Potluck was badass! Congratulations to all the winners!

Fished Sunday morning conditions were sweet.  Flatwater, light wind.  But that turned about 1100 when fan kicked on and current started rippin.  Kept a nice cabezon to take home.

The water clarity at Albion was incredible.  Makes me want to start diving!   Maybe next year!

My report:

Where do I even find the words to describe this weekend?! First off, thanks to everyone who worked hard to put this amazing event on. It was my first Albion and first NCKA event and I must say its gunna be a hard one to top!! Got there Thursday night and met one of the coolest dudes around, TW, who we were lucky enough to camp with all weekend!! Friday morning, Nick and I went fishing and I caught my PB Verm at 20.5 inches! I also got a my first sole at 15 inches but threw it back cuz it had parasites all over it. According to Pablito when you throw one back you have no soul...Came back in, met some more people, ate some bomb food (thanks baitnbeer), and then met Sarge who is THE man! Sarge and TW took us under their wings and showed us the ropes with abalone diving! It was our first time diving and I got 2 abs and Nick got 3! I freaking loved diving and being in a whole new underwater world- what an experience! We met some more people and fried up a couple of abs for dinner and gave some away. Saturday was big tourney day and i wasn't a contender but I was happy with my 30.5" and 29.5" lings. Nick went back out with sarge and TW for more abs Saturday and got some quality ones while I stayed back and prepped our potluck stuff! The potluck was filled with amazing food, awesome people, and great times. I was super lucky in the raffle and won a collapsible crab cage (sweet!), a truck rack (hell yeah, but now I need to buy a truck!), and I won the SUP (%#&$ YEAH)!!!! I cannot even begin to tell you how stoked I am and how grateful I am.. Seriously so bad ass! I can't wait to go crabbing on it! Sunday morning we were planning on going fishing but it was windier than the other days and we decided to go dive for abs. We gave away the ones we had and went out and both got our limits. I guess you can say we are hooked!! This weekend was incredible and my cheeks hurt from smiling so much! I can't thank everyone enough for being so kind, welcoming, and bad freakin ass! I met so many cool people and I look forward to fishing with you guys! Big shoutout to TW and Sarge again, Kyle, Anthony, B-rad, and Mike! You guys were a huge part in why this weekend was as epic as it was! Can't wait to see everyone at simply fishing!!

For this tournament I bought some Branson sea slugs from Bransonbaits.com.  I started with the Halloween color slug and within the first fifteen minutes I land a ling about 18 pounds.  A short time later I get a small, but, legal cab.  I see my brother reeling in a nice verm and I did what he usually does to me and paddled over to him and fished right next to him.  Mission accomplished I land two decent verms myself.

My fish count for the day was:  27 blacks, 1 blue, 1 cab, 3 Chinas, 6 gophers, 12 lings, and 2 verms.  My three fish total was over 25 pounds.  All I can say is the fishing was red hot.

Even after finishing in second place all my brother would say to me is that he caught a bigger verm then I did.  The art work on the awards is outstanding.  All I know is we have some very talented people in our group.

Craig, from all the pics on Facebook I looks like you and Linelle had a great time. You lined up a great group of volunteers, and they did a top notch job. I can't say enough how hard they worked, everything went so smooth. Christine and I had a great time. It seems Albion is my kryptonite, the  fish Gods were not in my favor again. I caught a bunch of small fish, but that is the smallest part of the tourney for me, it's the people that make it great. Can't wait until next year !!!!

Great event and great folks.  Was nice getting there on Tue night and having a few extra days to fish and chill.  Been awhile since I got to spend 4 straight days OTW - good for the soul.  Really good to see the number of quality lings, cabs, and especially, reds caught over the weekend.

Big thanks to Eric/Abdiver, Vic/VWool, Ruben/FishKraft, Greg/Cajun, Martin, and the other folks who stepped-up and kept things rolling smooth - well done fellas!  Congrats to all who placed.

Only snapped 3 pics - here's the big verm caught by David/Tigerfish - congrats.

What a great event the Albion Open is.  Thank you Craig and Lynelle for organizing this and thanks to your delegated crew who did an exceptional job running the awards ceremony in your absence.
I also want to thank all the Shulanders who made Shuland a success.  Everyone pitched in and contributed in some way.  I experienced many exotic dishes that I probably would never have a chance to try.  I witnessed the birth of Roger Shu's  "RSHUshi Bar".  He was making sushi all evening on Saturday.  He had abalone, uni, tobiko, quail eggs, swordfish, wild yellowtail, and Japanese farm raised creamy buttery Hamachi.  Mmmm.  I hope you stopped by to try some.  Next year we'll be back in the D section
I had a great time meeting new people and seeing old friends too.  NCKA people are the best.

Thank you Craig/ Lynnelle and everyone one who volunteered to make this event happen. Your hard work was very much appreciated and me and my family applaud all your efforts!

This was the best Albion I've attended thus far and maybe the best NCKA event I've ever attended. The fishing was great as always. But for me, the gracious and curdious hosts around the campground made this a very special event. The food was off the hook and it was everywhere! I mean, I had to slip out of a few spots cause I just couldn't eat anymore... yellow tail poke, chicharonis, BBQ ribs and pork belly, the sushi bar, jell-o shots... it never ended. But somehow I seemed to wonder back for more.  :smt007

It's funny, I have my 14yrold niece here from NH visiting for the summer as a treat for doing well in school. We are doing our best to show her all the different things that our area can bring, events, food, cultural experiences, ect. Her living situation back east is less than ideal with minimal opportunities for real growth. After the event she could not stop talking about how nice everyone was, the food, the open friendship and of course Shuland. She loved it!

Thank you guys!

Despite only having fished since I moved to California from North Carolina four years ago, winning the Albion Open rapidly became a paramount goal of mine and, well, the third time was a charm! Granted the home court advantage did not hurt, nor did the frequency in which I've had the privilege to fish these cold coastal waters the past four years, but I do hope that some burgeoning kayak angler can see that with proper preparation this is anyone's game on any given day. While it was some local boys, the then forthcoming NCKA member Josh Tsuji (kayakhogger) amongst them, that got me started bottom fishing, it was the NCKA forum that truly helped me refine my approach and expand my target species. I recall hooking my first king salmon a few seasons back and feeling almost indebted to then-strangers LoletaEric and matanaska, whose reports I had picked apart like a curious child until I found success. I'm still looking for my first tourney day salmon, in time I'm sure it will come, but what I am saying in a roundabout way is that old cliche that we are all winners. It truly is a remarkable community to be a part of, the encouragement, all of the give and take, the freedom of knowledge, and of course the steady flow of food and spirits. Without further ado, here is my tourney day fishing report:

I got a late start this year. I wasn't on the water until almost 6 this year. My first year I was to Mendocino Bay by daybreak and last year I was by the Albion buoy by at least five,  but as usual I was well rested because I took advantage of living local and stayed in a quiet bed. As much as I would love to whoop it up in Shuland all night, I know it would do me no favors come game time. Kayakhogger and I paddled out north of the buoy and did some quick drops to read our drift. We both hit some fish quickly, lots of olives and I had a nice sized copper and decent lingcod right off the bat. I noticed my mirage drive pulley wheel had more or less shattered on the way out through all the bump, not the best omen but it was still functioning so despite that little setback and in lieu of the forecasted winds I decided to stick with the initial plan to head south.

Bull Rock is no big secret. The locals work it pretty hard. Still I usually manage to pull a nice average 30"ish ling and tourney day was no exception. I was mooching for rockfish as I usually do, when I hooked a tiny rockfish and a better than decent hitchhiker. She was fat and even though I knew she was probably not fat enough I felt like I was on the way to having a nice stringer to weigh in. By this time a half dozen other boys were on the reef so I pushed in tighter looking for a cabezone, which eluded me for quite some hours although the kayakhogger did very well there. I pushed further south and more shallow, fishing alongside Cameron briefly and then making the call to push further south, much further south. I knew it was a gamble with the conditions and the timetable and the mirage drive malfunction but I had a premonition about a new spot and went for it.

I was drifting by the new spot when I had a big takedown and it did not stick. It was the only one all day that did not stick in fact. I pulled up a mangled rockfish and repeated the drift with it. I tried the drift two more times with a herring and then an anchovy. Finally I was dead sticking it and rigging my other pole with a tried and true artificial jig when my reel started peeling. I grabbed the rod and calmly worked my personal best 37" 19.5lb lingcod up and into my net. The front hook of my double snell was in the mouth of a small black and the back hook totally lodged in the lingcod's throat. She  never really had a chance.

I check the time and despite being in some very exciting new fishing holes I know that I need to get back and round out my bag with a cabezone or greenling still. I also cover a couple of stretches trolling for salmon with no luck. I tucked back in tight and tried my cabbie hole once more with no luck. I lost my favorite cabbie lure and radioed Kayakhogger to hold up before he headed in and after I ill-advisedly came busting out of the rock pile behind Bull Rock, he was kind enough to leave me with the cabbie slayer jig. Time was really getting tight now and I tucked in tight between Salmon Creek and Albion Cove. It had been a busy day and I had burned all of my bait by this time (a bag of chovis, a tray of herring, and a box of squid) so I was alternating Kayakhogger's cabbie jig, which popped two cabezones in a row, and a double pink squid which produced my second vermillion on the day. Ironically, the vermillion sized out my big copper so two of my three fish I weighed in came in the final minutes of the competition.

Again, time was short. In all three of my Albion Open competitions I came in with less than ten minutes to spare. This time it paid off. I once again ill-advisedly came plowing through the inside of the rock piles outside of the cove, fish and tackle piled in the center of the boat for stability as I hugged the coast to make the cut off. We all know the rest. It was my lucky day. Despite the victory I still can't help but envy that big 40" lingcod that Marcos nabbed and I can't help but lament that I didn't give Steve's lone salmon a little company, but hey, thats fishing for ya! In summary, congratulations to everyone on their personal victories, both small and large, those fulfilled and those yet to be realized! Until next time, tight lines...
