I was binging on "how to tie a shrimp fly for rock cod" videos and noticed that San Francisco shrimp flies tend to be tied on a 7/0 Mustad straight shank hook about 2" long. But other videos showed circle hooks, very short shank hooks, octopus hooks all tied on a 2 fly dropper like shrimp flies.  Can someone explain what the benefit of the straight shank mustad is for our region? Is this an adaptation or simply local custom?

For mass production it’s probably cheaper than a circle hook.  I used a circle hook shrimp fly on my last trip and did not dig it.

Don’t pass on em based on my preferences.  It was a light bite, fish weren’t aggressive at all, more like pecking bites and we weren’t hooking up.  I Think driving the hook home just works out better than waiting for em to load up.

Doesn’t mean you won’t like em lol.

I use these hooks and Berkeley gulp swim baits with a lancer jig on the bottom or if I’m crunched for time or last minute go and I’m out I’ll buy over the counter crappie rigs.

Edit:fixed the sideways photo and added the store rig.

Results are shown by my son’s smile on the lancer 4oz.

And these guys on the above hooks with the for mentioned baits, I have limited on blacks up here in 3 drops trough the schools with all 3 drops getting triple hooked up after catching a ling on my troll out and another shortly after the 10 minute limits, I was sitting there thinking “Damn now I just float around like a bobber watching the rest of the crew fish” not that I was complaining  :smt044

I've caught some of my biggest lings and butts on red and yellow or green and yellow--other swear by white and verm go crazy...50/60lb ones work best ...yes not a circle -hook but i bet that to tie them production....best 1.99-2.39 ive spent......when its slow i tow it to spots and never even reel up...full squid on one anchovy on the other light 2 oz weight to let it go slack down there...verm ...cabby...ling... big butts....everything eats them

#1 rig for me last year...outfished any lure

Thanks everyone. Triangle that was a great story, but missed my question. Why do we use long shank straight hooks...? Its the standard on all those P line, but I was interested in why....

Jack and coke now and who really cares if there’s a fish on line!

I have hade more hookups when I’m paying attention to something other then my line in the water, back when I used a float tube I literally just cracked my beer and my line buckled with a lake trout... well shit no cup holder...now what???? Fish can f’ing wait I can always catch another fish!!!  :smt044

I stopped using shrimp flies for the most part. Squid on a bare hook is just as productive.

Beer is cheaper the whiskey but whiskey is way faster! I have used lingcod freshly regurgitated squid and had a faster bit then my jig and shrimp flies.
