I have been co-ordinating tourney dates with Bill and we have decided on a date of Saturday, September 24th, 2005 as the official date for the first ever Mendo Kayak Tourney. This is premium topwater season, so get ready to paddle far and fast!
We will be in the Angels Camp group camp site. This will be a heaviest 2-fish limit format. Afternoon weigh-in and striper fish fry for dinner.
More details to follow...

Yeeee....haaa! That sounds like fun. I'm writing it on my calendar now.

I really think this will be great. The camping will be awesome, the weather is great this time of year...wineries as sponsors??? Does it get any better?
-
...wineries as sponsors???
I'm in!
-
Sean,
Sounds Awesome. Never been there so I look forward to taking the family up.
Stuart
-
FINALLY! We get to see Stuart in action again! :smt041 It's been too long buddy! Looking forward to seeing you out in the water again!
THIS WILL BE THE FIRST: Stuart actually fishing in a LAKE :smt118 A kodak moment :smt003
-
Unfortunately he will probably still smoke a lot of us, Stu has the touch!
-
Yup... our buddy Stu has some serious derby mojo. He's placed either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the last 4 kayak fishing derbies he's entered.... except the one he let me win, of course :smt002
-
Unfortunately he will probably still smoke a lot of us, Stu has the touch!
...........not if I rub some vicks vapor rub on his fishing line before the tourney starts :smt118
It's a dirty trick I learned fishing with the old timers at Lake Merced....waaaay back when :smt003
-
You guys are too much. Its all luck. Plus I'm definitely getting rusty.
Really looking forward to this one.
Sean,
I'm sure a lot of folks have never been to Mendo (myself included). Would it be possible to get an overview of which way to head out, etc. or is it pretty much hide and seek with the shad.
Speaking of shad, is it avail in baitshops or do we have to catch our own?
In Santa Nella (right by the San Luis Forebay, they are $1/each). OUCHH!
Stuart
-
Stu- I will pre-fish the heck out of the lake and provide NCKA members with the latest and greatest right up to the tourney. I also imagine Joel will be sleeping on my couch for at least a week or so before the tourney so you can ask him too. :smt003
In October the shad are not around to be caught, minnows are all thats around. They are also $1.00 each, but that time of year you will only need 2-5 a day, its the topwater season. Bait availability is sometimes unreliable in the fall, I will procure a stash of AA+ specifically for guys in the tourney.
-
Dude this tourney sounds just as tempting as the Elk Cove one. Sounds like another to take a Norcasl field trip.
-
What's the word on this Lake Mendo Striper Tournament? I was hoping to hear it offically announced this past weekend.
Here are some of the reasons I'm stoked to come ...
1.) Group camping again. At the Elk tourny this was an excellent way to get to know other kayak fishers and their families.
2.) Late September on Lake Mendocino = Warm water = No wetsuit required
3.) September 24th is a California DFG free fishing day (so invite a friend)
4.) I now have a second fishing kayak for my wife
5.) Sean is hosting again and this time in his home town.

Brian this has been "out" for a while, and we would love to have the BML crew join us again. This will be a campground setup, with no buildings etc.
We'll try a potluck this time since there seems to be some serious tail-gaters amongst us.
Time for me to start watching the lake and linesides, I'll keep everyone posted.
-
I am quiting one of my jobs so I will be free on the weekends for fishing and tournaments. Looks like I am in. I will be bringing the lady too. :smt080
-
oh ya :smt003
-
You guys talk about stu, but this is the first tourny that I won't be getting sea sick at. Alright baby, look out for the speed of the "freedom" . I'll try and put a rear view mirror on the yak! lol
-Brian
Salmon fishing sucks right now so what's a guy to do when he gets off at 3 in afternoon. Set sail with Cpt Morgan of course.
-
No swell! We are just getting this finalized...can't wait!
-
Hi Sean,
Do we have to make a reservation on the Campground? or just show up, is the tourney is just for one day event?....
-
No need for reservations, we have reserved a huge group site we will have all to our selves.
-
Please finalize and post info on camping etc.
Thanks

-
Unless something is happening that I am not aware of, this is finalized. What info do you need Mol?
-
Oh....let's see...
Time and date and location of campsite.
Rules and times etc. for the tourney.
Cost of the tourney.
Who and how to pay for the tourney.
Cost of the camping.
Stuff to bring for the camping.
Just to start.
:smt003
I must have missed it. Sorry if I'm acting all ignorant.

There is plenty of info to plan the trip and I'm sure Sean is working out the details.
Saturday, September 24th, 2005 - a start time hasn't been stated, but I'm sure it will be very early as that is when the best action is on the lake. Angel Camp group site which I believe is at the north end of Lake Mendo. I couldn't find very much info on the web about this group site, but Sean mentioned this site is typically only reservable with special approvals. No individual reservation is required as he is probably including it with the registration for the tourny.
No info on entry fees; he's probably crunching the numbers.
2 heaviest fish format. The lawyers are probably drafting the rules so he doesn't get sued when someone tries to weigh a log, turtle, fresh water bat ray, ect...
I camped at the lake in the spring. It is a beautiful setting near Ukiah, which has stores, restrauants, supplies, in case you forget anything. In the spring it got cold overnight (low 50's and hot during the day). Not sure about the fall.

Tourney is Sat. 9/24/05 @ Angel Camp, north Shore of Mendo off hwy 20
Tourney will start at 0630 weigh-in by 300 pm
Heaviest 2 fish limit wins, only by yak blah blah...I expect this to be settled by ounces, I will inspect the winning fish in and out, Stripers only
$30 fee, includes 2 nights of camping, camp already reserved
We will be doing a potluck TBA
GWKC will provide keg of beer and core of dinner meal
Bring whatever you normally use to camp
-
I'll try hard to make this one. If there'll be time for a side-trip rockie and ab run it won't be hard to get the wife aboard.
-
GWKC will provide keg of beer and core of dinner meal
Well....That seals the deal for me!
See you there.
When can we arrive at the campsite?
MolBasser
-
I've been drinking much less since kayaking. Used to be I'd shorefish with a 12pack late at night. Between early hours and logistics of relieving oneself from the kayak, I drink less on weekends now than during the week...
-
The camp will be open Friday at around 2:00 pm
-
Excellent. I should be there right around that time.
I'm really looking forward to this tourney, but I have volounteered for the Red Cross, and I am going to the gulf coast to help, so I'm not sure of my schedule right now....

Sean and/or others -
Do we need to pre-register for this tournie, or just show up and pay there?
Would you like us to bring anything as far as grub, plates, napkins, cups, etc.?
Anything else that may be needed?
Thanks!
-
Pre-reg is a big help. We will being doing a pot luck so bring stuff. I will get the potluck more organized shortly.
-
just an fyi....I took a quick trip to the coastside #2 bait and tackle shop (to get some more xraps - for bay striper trolling - chuck made me a believer today - when we were fishing the marin islands = thanks for sharing your successful lure with the rest of the community :smt023 ).....anyway, Marque donated a box of fishing goodies for the mendo striper derby. I'm hoping we can all support this guy and keep him open for a very long time. while I was there, I was treated to some smoked striper = VERY GOOD STUFF! He's got a smoker behind the store and will smoke fish for you - just ask him about it - he'll give you more details. (650) 359.9790. I'm definitely gonna have my next striper smoked by this guy!
looking forward to mendo! I'll bring my apron with me :smt002
