Rio makes killer Dacron backing that I have on every rod I own from 1-10wt.. They all have the same # rating at 25# which is normal for all fly setups.. If you need a deal on any fly gear, leader, tippet, backing, rods, reels let me know!

You want backing mainly to fill the reel so you can get a faster line retrieval. So, backing>running line> shooting head (e.g. T14 etc.) or just backing>integrated line. The backing/running line/head arrangement is nice because you can change the head easily, you just have to have the running line/head loop to loop connection outside the guides when casting.

That said I had a hot steelie take me into the backing this year trying to get back to the ocean, LOL. A big striper can do the same, personally I like a 9wt in the delta because it gives me a little more wood to turn the biguns if they head for cover.

Carefully.     

With lighter gear (up to 6wt), floating line and dry flies or shallow nymphs, I like a roll cast because for me, personally, I feel more balanced on the kayak.

I'm having some issues with casting an 8wt (and up) with fast sinking lines/tips and heavy flies at the moment, so I'm not a great source, but a Belgium cast is showing promise.

Any continuous cast that doesn't have a full stop in the backcast seems to work well.

IF you want to get a feel for it, pull your kayak (or a milk crate) out on the lawn, sit in it and work out what feels right to you.  I have a large enough yard and lots of trees to hide the madman sitting in a kayak on the lawn.

 Im wanting to get into bass/striper fly fishing. Used to do a lot of high mountain stram/creek flyfishing but fishing with flyaker  in the past is now wanting me to get into some big linesides on the flies

I just dont know where to start! 8wt/9wt? which reels? what streamers? Im lost!

Im sure it would help others out as well wanting to get into the flyfishing on the kayak. Im sure casting big streamers would be hard being that close to the water.

I love my 8 weight with a type 3 shooting head and amnesia.  It gets windy and this setup helps to get the fly out there.   I use a clouser, varying colors but chartreuse,  blue and green all seem to work.  I think finding the fish and getting a fly in front of them is most important.   Watch the tides and note how high /low they are if you are getting fish.  And keep moving if you are not getting bit.  I go out in San Pablo bay near Napa a lot. 

Picked up a budget 8wt. If I am hooked I'll upgrade to some nicer stuff. If nothing else it will be fun for some LMB if it can't support some big linesiders
