I want to do some winter camping for a few days.  I live in the Bay Area and am willing to travel 100 miles or so.  Any recommendations of some good spots?  It would be nice if it was near an area to either target shoot or fish, coastal or inland is all good with me.

Hey Gem,

why not try and get into one of the places that are impossible during summer, like New Brighton State Beach, Angel Island, or Kirby Cove?

I'll check it out.  Never been to those locations.

Many thanks!

If you head into the Sierras you get into National Forest lands. You can target shoot and if you camp near one of the many lakes you can fish as well. Where there might be good fishing this time of year I don't know. It would definitely put the "winter" into winter camping though.  :smt044

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

Thanks!  I'd definitely would have to dig out my cold weather gear for the Sierras.

DEFINITELY check out where you plan on going before going.
I tried to get a spot at Lake Tahoe 2 weeks ago; everything is closed for the winter.
Not sure if gated roads are open or not because of the gov't shut down.
Just check to see that you can get in before you head out.

Good for you for being willing to go winter camping. We camp several times a month year round. While many campgrounds do close over the winter, primitive camping is much better because you often have an area to yourself. Mendocino National Forest has some remote spots that would meet your needs and is much lower, i.e. not as cold, as the Sierras. You can reach MNF through the Ukiah or northern Clear Lake area. Roads are dirt so 4x4 may be necessary if it rains.

It's 120mi from Belmont to BS  :smt008
It came to mind because the reserveable sites are ALWAYS booked 6 months in advance...but I know a friend who just booked a site for 12/6-8 online @ one of the campgrounds down there. Same deal for the campgrounds north of Santa Cruz, like Big basin or Henry Cowell.

Great ocean access at Shelter Cove. Limited camping but doable.
