General Talk / Seasons Greetings
« on: December 24, 2020, 03:56:39 PM »
With 2020 finally winding down, it's time to look back at the positive things that occurred for me.  Mainly my family staying healthy and financially stable.  Also the incredible off-shore fishing I was fortunately able to have.  And not letting the negative things hold me back from enjoying life.

Humor makes all things bearable, with that said, I'd like to pass on this poem sent to me by Gary and Joan H. that one of their friends wrote.

Safety First / Shark Shield question
« on: January 16, 2019, 04:27:44 PM »
I have a question for any users in the local north coast waters.  I'm considering buying Freedom7 Shark Shield.  Reading the specifications, the lower end of the temperature operating window is near the normal ocean temperatures of the north coast.  The colder the water, the faster the battery charge diminishes and the more inefficient the unit functions.  My questions:  How long has your charge lasted in local waters?  Has your unit actually deterred a shark (any species) or has it been that there were no sharks in the area?  Has it proved its worth by actually deterring, by visually witnessing, or does it just provide peace of mind?

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Heads Up for Albion
« on: October 16, 2018, 01:55:51 PM »
The Albion Campground has begun winterizing their site.  The Pond launch is still wide open but the river launch has been rip-rapped with large rocks.  You'll need to lift your kayak over to access the river or beach launch.  Not to panic, they will be moved before next season.  Also not a bad idea to call ahead for the gate code.  Winter hours nine to five.

CA Regulations / Adventure Island registration
« on: April 14, 2017, 10:20:36 AM »
I'm looking for a definitive answer to the question of whether the Hobie Adventure Island (when under sail) needs to be registered for use on California waterways.  The "ABCs of Boating" published by the California Department of Boating and Waterways states any vessel longer than eight feet with a sail needs to be registered.  Yesterday the local Department of Motor Vehicles disagrees stating as long as it does not have a motor it does not need to be registered.  Who do I believe?  (Being government agencies, I don't believe either one.)  Does anyone out there have the "chapter and verse" from any of the state code book deciding this issue?  I'm curious because of the stories I'm hearing from Southern California Adventure Island kayakers being citied for non-registered vessels.
