Hey everyone,
I finally picked up my first shotgun, a new Remington 870 12 gauge. I'm going to put some time in at the range to get accustomed to it and shorty after, hopefully sometime this month I would like to take my kayak out and find some duckies. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can launch early in the morning and try for them?

Thanks for reading,
Steph

Season starts on the 20th. Day before Tiki event. There is a lot of places around there to shoot. I'll be out on Sat before Tiki knocking them down. I'll be about four miles form Tiki set up with deeks. I'm paddling out about 4:30 or so. Fun in the dark.

Steph,

I hunt the Napa Sonoma Marsh. You can launch at cuttings wharf or Skaggs island. You also have Grizzly island pretty close to you that could be a good option. The early goose season closes tomorrow so I will be out there working the marsh in the morning. If you want to hook up and hunt Napa Sonoma during the general season let me know. I am a rookie as well so you will have to endure some rookie mistakes.

I spent time time shooting trap at the concord rod and gun club. It definitely helped me get a feel for my gun 12g 870 as well. Plus it helps you get a feel for your leads etc...

Best,
Phil

Hey Phil,
I went out to the Skaggs Island launch (Hudeman Slough Launch) on Sunday to check it out.  It looks 'ducky' but sure didn't see any sign of waterfowl.  How is that place for hunting anyways?

Saw that you need to call to get the key to the gate if you want to get in early as well.  Do you have one?  That road, the last mile or so, is pretty rough!  Especially for a paved road.  Looks like someone ripped the ground with a dozer then they paved it.  Ha!!

Anywhere in the delta, 150 yards from inhabited buildings, and there are a few closed zones. FYI, all the islands are to be considered private ground, so plan your shots so you do not have to get out and retrieve a bird in someone's field. You can go up to high water mark. I hunt the San Juaquin side a lot. The gunfire from Stockton muffles my shooting, and thus, incognito!
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

Hey SkiPro3,  I launched out of Skaggs on Saturday and had a chance at a few honkers but missed. i launched out of there and again today. There was a lot of activity on Saturday being the goose opener but it was quieter today. I did some ducks today as well. Gadwalls, GWT, female mallards and some canvasback I believe but I am still working on my duck I'd as this is my first year going after waterfowl.

I did pull a striper out today so I would recommend brining a rod with you as we'll.

If you want to go out sometime during the season let me know. I will probably launch there on the opener as long as the tides look ok. I have a few ponds I plan on hitting that I have seen hold the most ducks. Most likely pass shooting in the morning the jump shooting through the rest of the day.

Shoot me a PM if you want to join and I will send you my number to set something up.

Best,
Phil

Bummer I just realized I'm going to deer camp next week, so looks like I'm missing out on Tiki this year. Gone Monday-Saturday. If I have the hair to go I may try for Sunday. Well hopefully I can get some meat hanging and have something to share on the next meetup.  :smt006

Hi Skipro. I don't have a key but I have been out between 3:45-4:15 last week and it was wide open so I do not think you would have any issues.

Best,
Phil
