In recent years there have been several instances where a bilge pump included as part of the overall safety gear has made a difference in the survivability of the situation. We often get questions from new people joining the group about what they should have with them. Let's take this opportunity to highlight this important piece of safety gear.

With a hull full of pool noodles, a sponge and small plastic bucket, I've managed to remove any water and stay afloat.

I used to not carry one, till I rolled and lost a hatch, I tried reentering 4 times, and all 4 times I rolled again. Then I saw the hatch was gone, and I had to get help from my NCKA brothers and the HMB harbor patrol. Never again, after that I carried a bilge pump, a sponge, put some bungee on the hull to keep it in place, and have never looked back. Every time I wash the boat and clean the inner hull I break it out and use to make sure it still works.   I was lucky once, I don't want to ever have that feeling of being in the water and can't do anything but wait till someone else gets to me.

Ya Mon, spare paddle, pump, and throw/tow rope always ride with me!

I have not yet needed the rope, but have used the other two a few times each.

Whipping out a spare piece of gear can make the difference between "no biggie" and a ruined day.

I used to carry a throw rope bag on my kayak from my whitewater rafting days but removed it. After reading the recent story and experiencing a few situations on the water I have thoughts of adding it back in. It doesn't take up much space but would deliver in a variety of situations.

Never.  I just make sure my fishing partner does.

Just kidding of course.  Who in their right mind wouldn't carry a pump?  Noodles, sponges, buckets are fine, then the pump is a back up or a rescue for someone else.  But there is a pump and it is always tested at the launch.

I carry one,
Never had to use it but in this sport, ya never know...
Better to have it and not need it than
needing one and wishing ya had one!

I think I would say I passively carry one. I have a pump bungeed into both of my kayaks. It’s just always there.

I only carry a pump on the ocean, not freshwater. It is tethered inside my center hatch if I need  it.
