I used to always tuck a 3-pack of pencil flares in the inside pocket of my PFD. The idea was if I fell off, I would send one pencil flare straight up.. and if I didn't get a response, I'd aim the second one at hte nearest boat..LOL.  Always made me nervous to have small explosives packed next to my heart... Now I see road flares are replaced iwth electronic LED flashing hockey pucks.. and I"m wondering.. is there a marine equivalent to replace the pencil flares in my PFD?

this one is a legal replacement but is not an aerial device.  not sure how well it would work for a kayak low to the water.  Goes on sale from time to time as well for even cheaper.

That picture is what happened when I made the mistake of having oysters and mexican food the night before kayak fishing.
Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.

I also have an emergency strobe (like the Leland tools pictured) not sure same brand, operates on 1 D-Cell and it's basically a camera flash every second or so, so yeah it's bright, waterproof and anchored to my PFD on my left shoulder.

Couldn't find the video, but did find this warning:

This was answered at a safety at sea seminar that I attended this winter, and comes directly from the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan. They instructed us that if a helicopter has been deployed for a rescue, and a laser is being used to signal, the pilot will turn around and the rescue will be cancelled. Supposedly this is due to the fact that the eyesight of the pilot is an invaluable resource that the Coast Guard cannot afford to lose. Likewise, they instructed us that if one is used while a rescue boat is in use, the rescue boat will turn away, but will not call of the rescue. They will only turn back once the laser has ceased being used.

I remember all the rock concerts I went to the 70's and 80's that had lots of lasers.  I sure don't recall any warnings back then.

Yes, but.....You never saw ONE Coast Guard Rescue at any of those concerts, did you?  Case Closed.  Mic Drop.

Lasers bad

Federal Law allows an EXCEPTION for laser emergency signaling devices to send a distress signal to aircraft.

In February 2012, the United States Congress passed into law HR658 authorizing appropriations for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for fiscal years 2011 through 2014.  Included in the law is Section 311 "Prohibition Against Aiming a Laser Pointer at an Aircraft".  Section 311 39A(c)(3) on page 56 specifically exempts "an individual using a laser emergency signaling devices to send an emergency distress signal."
