General Talk / Harder to get to HMB for a while
« on: January 12, 2023, 06:58:15 PM »
I just saw this.  Not sure if they will have this fixed before the weather improves, but just in case they don’t, just a heads up for those of you planning to fish at HMB.  You’re gonna have to take a bit of a longer route to get there.

CA Regulations / Crab Buoy Regulation Clarification question
« on: November 16, 2022, 09:55:16 AM »
Hello All, I’m looking at the actual language of the buoy rules, and they state:

“All crab traps must be marked with a specific sized buoys.  The Main Buoy must be at least 5” in diameter and 11” in length with an additional Red Marker Buoy that is 3” in diameter and 5” in length, attached to main buoy with 3’ of line or less.”

Then, they put up the picture that we have all seen.

My questions are as follows:

1.  Which take precedence, the language or the picture?

The reason I ask is that I set up my buoys with a pvc pipe and flag in them.  I put a weight on one side and the flag floats vertically in the water making it much easier to spot when the swells pick up.

2.   Can I just tie the small 5” buoy to my existing setup with a “line of 3’ or less” and be legal?

Doing so complies to the language but not the picture.  This is why I’m asking if I can ignore the picture and comply to the language of the regulation.

3.  These regulations are for crab traps.  Are these regulations valid for hoop traps as well?

Safety First / Where are your personal limits? (Weather)
« on: December 15, 2014, 01:39:03 PM »
So, I'm still relatively new to this.  I've been out crabbing in HMB maybe half a dozen times this season.  The conditions on Thanksgiving day were absolutely epic.  Near zero wind and 1-foot swells.  (if that.)  I know that my personal wind limits are below 8 mph, but I don't quite know where my max swell limits are.  So far this year, the biggest I've had to deal with were on November 2nd.  Sadly, I don't remember exactly how big those were.

The reason I'm asking is that the I'd like to go out to HMB this Saturday, but the forecasted swell is around 11 feet.  I don't have a reference for whether or not that is huge compared to what I've already seen.

I actually went out to HMB last Saturday morning with intentions of going out.  But, when the sun came up, I saw white caps breaking over the North Jetty and decided to just go back home.

Where are your personal limits on the wind and waves?

General Fishing Tips / Sand dabs in HMB?
« on: November 21, 2014, 11:12:28 AM »
So, I've been crabbing a few times in Half Moon Bay.  I've found that there's a good amount of time to kill while I let my pots soak.  I'd like to fish while waiting, but I'm way too lazy to paddle all the way to the cans.  I was thinking that the area where I drop my pots is just sandy bottom, there should be sand dabs there.

Has anyone tried fishing for sand dabs in the shallow areas (~40 feet) in HMB?  Are there any there, or do you have to go to much deeper water (100+ feet) in order to catch sand dabs in the area?

Sorry if this is a repeat question.  I tried the search bar, but I didn't really find anything that answered my questions above.

Introductions / Newbie
« on: August 20, 2014, 10:14:07 PM »
Hello all.  New guy here.  I just bought my Jackson Big Tuna.  I'm hoping to get her all dialed in to catch crab by the time November 1st rolls around.

I still have quite a bit to learn.  Up to now, I've primarily fished off the party boats.  I'm now hoping to see what I can catch on my own.

Looking forward to learning as much as I can from this site.
