Title: Guess I'll Start: GS5 Report
Post by: Roughster on May 16, 2011, 07:52:57 PM
So I got a late chance to go to GS5.  Unfortunately the tourney was closed but hey, I was there to fish as a priority anyways!  I got a decent jump out of Vacaville on Friday at about 4PM.  Only thing I forgot was dinner (wasn't a problem due to a pack of gas station hotdogs, the potlucks, and generosity of the Loose Screws!) and a towel (damn it was cold drip drying after showering).  Got to Shelter Cove as the sun dipped below the horizon.  By the time I paid my $40 for the 2 nights and drove in it was dark.  Kinda sucked to not know where everyone was, but I was pretty beat anyways after work (I went in at 5:45 AM) and the drive.  I talked to Aaron and his gf (sorry can't remember your name  :smt012 ).  I pretty much immediately crashed out in the back of my truck after that.  The party was going strong with lots of hooting and hollering.  Didn't really bother me though once I got to sleep.

Woke up at 5 AM and got my crap ready to drive down to the launch at 1st light.  Launched with Eric and a decent size group.  We trolled out to the Bell and Whistle with no one really seeing any action that I observed.  I marked a few waypoints were I saw schools of rockfish and bait on the way out which served me good steed the next day (more on that later).

After trolling around for a bit, I finally got a tug, swung for the fences and nothing.  I waited him out doing a little bit of jiggling and sure enough he came back and got it:

A decent size black.  He must've came off the bottom and tagged it as I was trolling with a #40 dive plan a slingblade and a hoochie tipped with a side of chovy.  Released him and went back to trolling around.  Nothing for a long time.  I switched over to mooching with 2 barbless circles and landed a Gopher and Greenling that were immediately released:

Greenlings are such beautiful fish!  I had never seen one before.  After that I made my way back in since obviously the salmon weren't around.  I tried for some surf perch off the jetty after I loaded my kayak up to no avail.  Took some nice shots highlighting how beautiful the weather was:

That night it the storm started moving in but it was still great conditions for the "pre-potluck potluck".  The food was amazing and Martin's beer was fantastic!  Hung out with the Loose Screws for a bit after the potluck then crashed out again due to still trying to recover from the work week.

Woke up 5AM to absolutely torrential rain.  Loaded up and was at the launch around 6AM.  Back out but this time the whole crew was out in force.  The bad news?  The rain was so crazy I couldn't get my lens dry, no joke that's how bad it was raining!  On top of that the swells were decent size AND the wind starting blowing pretty hard in a solid consistent pace by 8am making it a bit choppy.  This had the effect of an ice box on us.  Literally, there were times I was shaking so bad I couldn't stop.  This was with a full 3/5 wetsuit + paddle jacket/pants and a hat.

Pre-8AM wind storm.

Anyways, I started off mooching with the 2 circle hooks and landed a Gopher to start.  Sorry for the lack of action pictures but the hawg trough shot will have to do!

Next up was a small Vermillion ~16" that I didn't get a picture of.  Same spot and I was able to scratch up a Cabezon.  This guy was pretty beefy and I was stoked to land him!

Moved spots and started fishing next Hobie Dave.  He laughed when I whipped out a swimbat on a lead head and started "bass fishing", but I had the last laugh, HA!  I landed 3 fish in rapid succession using a cast as far as I could, let it sink to the bottom, steady retrieve with pops off the bottom then let it fall till it tapped the bottom again and rinse repeat.  1st up was a good size Vermillion:

Tossed the swimbait back out and landed a shaker ling I tossed back.  Tried again and bam, a black:

The fun wasn't over though, I rerigged my swimbait as it was getting shredded, tossed it back out, another Verm that was pretty stout!

By this time, my swimbait (which only had one of) was so shredded, I actually had to flip it upside down to get it stay on the lead head.  The winner rig!  This thing was just a slayer!

About this time of day, we all heard a "Man in the water" radio call, quickly followed by a "he's OK" call.  Not sure what happened but interested in hearing the tale!  Tossed the swibait back out and...my 1st keeper Ling Cod.  I did manage to get 2 semi-salvageable live shots of him:

Not happy when I brought him in.  He flopped around and landed between my legs to where I saw a sight every man fears....big teeth right next to my junk!

This is what he looked like on the trough:

If I would've took the time to straighten him out he would've been close to 27".

By this time I was absolutely frozen.  I looked at Dave who seemed to be pretty cold himself and told him I was thinking of heading in.  He said he was just thinking the same thing, so we headed back for the long pedal back in, got to love the Hobie!  Beached the rig and grabbed a few shots of the haul:

Yes my kayak is that much of a cluster fuck when I fish, heheh  :smt003

I immediately headed up to clean them up as I knew the second I degeared and relaxed there would be no way in hell I was going to clean 7 fish.  If you have read my reports you know I am just TERRIBLE at cleaning fish.  I actually felt like I got some good practice and managed to cut out some really nice fillets, but damn I am slow!  Sorry to anyone who was waiting for my spot!

At the end of my hack job, this was the state of the cleaning station:

Headed over to the potluck were it just poured rain and the wind blew like mad.  The food was amazing again, and it was nice to be able to find some Shelter in the garage  :smt003   Unfortunately I couldn't stick around for too long as I had to be in work this morning at 5:45 AM.  It was a long wet drive back home fueled by 3 cups of coffee.  I got home right after dark and was dreading unloading the truck, but it actually went pretty fast.

That was my 1st GS event and it was awesome!  Next year I will definitely immediately sign up and bring a few of the Mrs's dishes for the potluck!  Thanks to everyone who answered my noob questions!

I just walked in the door. I am bushed. We killed it today. Darius caught a 30 lb pac hali today. OMG KILLER. I caught and released over 20 lingcod today. Rain ,snow, wind. AWESOME. This was a true Nor-cal; event. Not to be confused with some pussy So cal event with warm water and sunny days. This event that Eric put together tested the true mettle and perserverance of the kayak angler. Thanks so much Eric for giving us an opportunity to shine in the kayak fishing world. Baddest event to date. I will post more tommorrow. Heres our hosts and Totally cool kayak guru and OK rep Greg. Thanks again. PS a 40 lb pac hali was caught on game day.

Got back a couple of hours ago and just got done clean fish; {mental note for GS6: don't freaking wait till you get home to clean fish}.

What a weekend! first major gathering with NCKA for the wife and I; and what a way to introduce her to the club. we both had a great time! dispite the one blast of wind that almost took off the RV's canopy (thanks for the midnite help HobieDave) weather was only a minor issue; it just brought members closer together....

Fishing... unbelievable! first time in the ocean with a kayak, and what a blast it was... first few moments were kinda tense, but once I worked out the balance thing.... we were off an peddling....

I'll post pictures tomorrow, I'm too dang tired; but I loved hanging out with the club, I convinced the wife to cancel a family trip just to go to Albion.... wahooo!

Yeah...Always clean there. You only need to package the fish up...Glad to see you there. The big events are sure to convert. Wait till the wife sees albion. Fishing isn't as great but the family vibe is awesome!

The partying was off the hook and Zilla rocked the BBQ station once again. I bailed early after bailing my leaky as tent out. The rain started Saturday night and I woke up feezing my ass off in wet sleeping bags and puddles of water in the tent. It had a bath tub floor and it worked great for keeping the damn water in. Also my EZ UP collapsed from the rain puddling on it :smt013. I made the call to pack my soaking frozen wet ass home and not even fish on Sunday. Thanks to BigFoot for the helping me drain my tent out to pack up. No dry clothes or sleeping bags ended my trip. 630 miles and didn't wet a line but it was great to see the buddies and get a quick dive in with EWB. On another positive note, the new girlfriend was a total trooper about the trip. She was soaked and cold too but offered to sit in the truck if I still wanted to fish.

Thank you Eric.  Especially with the help during the ab hunt.  A great time despite the crappy wx.  The Cove and the event both lived up to their reputations.  Great times with everyone.  Caught fish and abs.  Sore and very behind at work today but so worth it.

Brian,

Thanks for the company, grub and help with diving. Sorry about the super taj mahal tent. I knew when I left in the AM you'd be gone. I am glad (Stephanie, right) had a OK time despite the wx, etc.

Another job well done Eric. Thanks again bro for all the many hours you have put
in to making GSV a great success. Congrats to all the winners and thanks also to
the sponsors that donated the prizes. The fishing was awesome. I only wished that I didn't get so seasick that forced me to come in too early in the game. Despite the weather, a lot of people still came out to fish and came back with some fish.

Special thanks to G-Whiz and Mrs. G-Whiz for offering me to stay with them in their RV. Like I said Glen, you should change your name to Gizmo. :smt003 BTW,
congrats on placing in the top ten being that it was your first Major Tourney. I can't wait to do this again next year.

I did with some...Just the lead head's. Which worked. Pretty sure my powder paint had zero impact! Jed was using some, I forgot to ask him if they worked.

Darius' is almost 1.5 feet shorter(i think someone said 30"). 48"/39lb was the winner!

Congrats, fellas. You guys are all officially hard core. I woke up to make Derik a bottle at 4:30AM on Sunday and it was pouring rain and howling wind. When I woke up again at 6:00AM the wind had died but it was cold as f**k and still raining.....so I took my ass back to bed. Didn't even fish the whole week-end, and still haven't fished this year.

Still had a great time, though! Kinda busy at work right now, but will post some pics a bit later.

Good to see the Sonoma Contingent on the podium!

While my pics/vids load, I thought I'd share the team results for the last minute (experimental) :smt002
GS5 Team Compitition.
We had a total of 9 teams entered :smt004 (would have been 10 but the NoHum Hookers didn't return the score card)
and 47 anglers signed up. :smt003
Scoring was a Team Average format:
Total scores of each angler on the team were added together then divided by the number of anglers on the team
if they fished or not, or checked in or not.

Here are the results:

1st. place: SLAYRIDE
Total score: 3191 divided by 7=
                  455.71 Team Score
(Holy Toledo, O2B, El Dorado, Bird, Saltydog, Ravensblack, Jonesz)

                   416.5 Team Score
                   (Boogieman,Prophet)

3rd. place: LOCAL CONNECTION
Total score: 2327.75 divided by 6=
                  387.95 Team Score
(AbKing, Domenic, Brandi, SRJ, Redwoodfox, Jeff Riggs)

4th. place: LOOSE SCREWS
Total score: 3795.75 divided by 10=
                  379.57 Team Score

5th place: NORTH VALLEY SLAYERS
Total score: 921.5 divided by 3=
                 307.16 Team Score
                 (BanjoTad, MattS, Fisheducator)

6th. place: THE RINGERS
Total score: 693.5 divided by 3
                  231.16 Team Score
                  (Big Gabe, MontanaN8V, Matt Nelson)

7th. place: DAWN PATROL
Total score: 276.5 divided by 2=

I hope all the teams had fun with it. :smt001
I enjoyed doing it even though it was a last minute idea and not worked into the awards ceremony.
Thanks MattS for having the  bucket of tackle available if we had the opportunity to award the winners.

Thanks Eric for allowing me to do this at the last minute and as always putting on an Epic event :smt004
I'm thinking if we decide to make this a part of future GS's we should have a perpetual trophy or award that the winning team keeps for a year, places the team name on it for that year, and returns it to the event the next year.

Congrats to Team SLAYRIDE! Winners of the first GS Team Compitition.

Thanks all,
Tad

Cant wait to see this stringer!!

Eric, did you fish the tackle you made?

I did with some...Just the lead head's. Which worked. Pretty sure my powder paint had zero impact! Jed was using some, I forgot to ask him if they worked.

Darius' is almost 1.5 feet shorter(i think someone said 30"). 48"/39lb was the winner!

I'm not trying to downplay terry's Hali but look at the picture I just post, Darius' Hali is around 45" long (not 30" for sure).  Here is the picture of Terry's Hali & Darius' Hali.

I'm wrecked. What a great time.  :smt005 :smt044

Big congrats to ALL the fishermen and women who went out there in tough, cold conditions and brought back MANY amazing fish!

Terry...a truly deserved victory...so stoked for you!!!!

Thank you to everybody for all the great times and memories.

A-Hulls...love you guys!!! Would not be the same without ALL of you!!!!

Zilla...it was great to meet you. Thanks for all the amazing food, conversation and hooking me up with the Ling Hole and monster swim bait.

Ravensblack...was nice getting to chat with you and look forward to hanging out with you again soon.

One of my highlights...making baitnbeer throw up while ab diving hungover by telling him not to think of a greasy fried egg served up in a dirty ashtray!!   :smt003 :smt005 :smt044 :smt044

Feel very fortunate to have you all as my friends.

AbKing....you should be really proud of putting on such a great event and for the very generous donation to a great cause...I'm humbled and hope my little speech went OK....

Here is a little vid...looks best in 720p.

OK..I am too excited just writing this :smt003 ..but first I would like to thanks Eric for another epic hookup..Sonny for being such a good companion on the carpool..Loose Screws (once your a loose screws always a loose screws)  :smt007 John for letting me use his knockers hit beat the shit of the Hali..Craig for sharing the secret hammer color. :smt002 BNB, SARAH/AL  and ZILLA for the feast the to all those made this event memory of a life time THANK YOU!! I am sorry I am bad at names the Coffee and Cinamon breakfast was awesome thanks..now let get to the fishing..
Day 1 Event day....Man is it just me or was it cold? I only fish for 2 hrs caught a dozens underlings and tons of blacks blues cabbies greenling I caught 2 legal Lingcod till one of them decided to abandon my kayak :smt013 I forgot my clip and stringer..that place has more fish you can ever catch in a lifetime non-stop action until it got cold...my hands are so numb you can served a tits wont even able to feel them :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Day 2 Memory of a Lifetime....I was planning to take some more fish home (despite cooler if full "fish heads and some hali carcass from the cleaning station) I did get much bite on the twin tail on the day of the event. So I decided to switch to big hammer 6" swimbaits 2 oz jig head I was catching nice size black, cabbie and 15 underlings 4 are 23 and 3/4"  :smt003 I said wow this swimbait really works despite being almost shred to pieces I still use it front of the light house between 50-60 ft of water I decided to move to shallower but I let my bait on the water (bottom 2 crank up) as I paddled a bit further I noticed my pole bent..Pulled it thought I was snag..when I crank 2 feet of line thats when my reel goes ZZZZZZZZZTTTTTTTTTTT..I thought it was a big ling...until it runs so hard my was close on smoking (john heard too) felt a big head shake..I said OMG it might be a big hali everytime I take 20yards it will take forty my line was getting really low I can almost see the base of my line..after 25 grueling minute the saw a glimpse white diamond shape..I got nervous..I tried to net it and there it goes again..it took another 4 times I netted it hey it wont fit easily..finally I won..I almost lost my paddle (thanks john for recovering it) but I lost my ROD and REEL set on the photo ops in the water for big Hammer (I really hope the will send me some swimbait) I lost my set up just to get a good picture in the water..Again THANKS To all that been part of my trip..I will let the others tell the story about the balut :smt003

Great to catch a personal best ling, even though it didn't compare to some of the monsters I saw at the check in. :smt003
Great to be part of the NCKA brotherhood! :smt003

Here are some pics/vids from Sat. salmon trolling, the bait stealin blacks were released to live until at least Sun.

Despite the cold wind and the pouring rain, GS5 was awesome!  I met a lot of good people, and got to see some others that I haven't seen in a while.  I'd like to thank Chadrock for helping me out with lending me gear I forgot and showing me the ropes of rockfishing.  Very cool of you man.  Because of his help I was able to help get the HangOver team on the board!  I was super stoked about that.  I'd also like to thank Eric and the rest of the event organizers for putting on such an awesome event, I'm already looking forward to next year...and planning to spend more time hunting Halibut!  Holy crap, what a catch!  I only took a few pics cause it is hard to take a picture when you have mild Hypothermia.  Speaking of Hypothermia, let me tell you about its effects on the human body...simply put, your body goes into rescue mode and starts sending blood from your extremities to your major organs which is why when you are extremely cold your hands and feet seem to work in slow motion.  So taking pictures was tough!  Standing up after hitting the beach was tough, and the thought of standing in the rain cleaning fish after freezing my ass off on the ocean seemed ridiculous to me so all of my fish were C&R except one 28" ling that I know someone out there has a picture of.  At GS5, C&R fish were awarded a bonus inch, so my laziness actually helped out for once!  I love it!

The food was awesome, thank you everyone for being so generous.  I would like to say that I sacked up and ate Balut as well as raw Abalone Gonad.  Both werent as bad as one would expect- flavor wise.  Texture wise, kinda gnarley, but I was able to get it down (wait till you see the Fishmaster1 video).  Overall it was a great experience with great company.  I'm looking forward to getting back to the Cove sometime this summer.  Like I said earlier, my pictures suck, but its better than nothing.  Thanks for making GS5 such a wonderful experience everyone!

Just got home and caught up on the posts here so far - had to tear myself away as there was opportunity to salmon troll for 3 more hours and the water and wind weren't too bad today - still some yaks on the water as I left.  I gotta be realistic though - I'm burnt!  Time to unload the truck, get a little grub, get my son to a a baseball game, and try to assimilate back into normal life.   :smt005

Thanks to everyone who attended.  Congrats to the winners - I'll post up the official top 10 and their scores and catches later.  I didn't do as much pic and vid work as I usually do, but I'll have some porn up later.    :smt003

Putting on this event is helping me figure out that drinking too many beers and staying up too late Friday evening is a bad idea for the rest of the weekend - no energy to spare on the marthon I just ran!   :smt005  Saturday I got up at the splitting headache/still buzzed hour of 5AM and got down to the ramp to salmon fish until late morning when family time needed to happen.  It was a thrill to get out there with a couple dozen good NCKA friends salmon trolling at the Whistle buoy.  I was so hopeful that someone would hookup - anyone!  So an hour or two in I'm getting really seasick (I don't get seasick unless I drink too much the night before   :smt010) - anyway, we've been trolling around by the Whistle and the only action is blacks and a few underlings, even for the few powerboats right there with us.  I start to make a line inside to head in, pass over the clear water into what I start telling myself is "salmon water" - hazy, kinda greenish/brownish - and BOOM, fish on!!!  I quickly put the paddle in fighting position, load up my rod and feel the fish run and hit the surface.  WOOHOOO, I gave out a loud yell which at least 6 yakkers around me heard.  The fish broke the surface between me and SCTrace (nice to meet you!), then it ran RIGHT AT ME.  I reeled in as fast as I could with the prayer that always comes at that moment, "PLEASE still be on there!".  It was!  I horsed it right up to my boat and it shot directly under my ass.  I got the net out and had my DeepSix all the way up to my rod tip.  I knew this was no 25 pounder, but it was a nice fish.  I pulled it out by high-sticking, it was RIGHT THERE.  I went to net and it went fucking ballistic, shook its head, spit my hooks, and was gone.  I was describing it as about 15 pounds, but a powerboat that caught one at the same time radioed 12 pounds - that's likely what mine was.  Yes, it was heartbreaking, but it was also great validation to have hooked and brought that fish to my boat.  It also made me realize that just being there in charge of helping the group have a kickass time was something I was really jacked for.  I blew what would've been 3 years in a row of a special catch by one of us on pre-fish day, but I'll make sure to get more opportunities in the coming months.   :smt004

I don't think our group fought or landed any other salmon this year - the bite was definitely not happening for salmon at the Cove for GS - maybe next year on that front.  As for the rest of the weekend, I agree with Dustin - a whole bunch of badass kayakfishing men and women proved that they can get it done in really tough conditions.  Well done, everyone - the spirit of the group and good vibe coming from each of the individuals was a pleasure to be around.  I'll get some visuals up when I can.   :smt001

Another great shelter cove tourney.. Thanks eric (and every one who helped out)..  great job as usual!!

I managed to donate my camera to the deeps on monday so I have zero pix to post.  Thanks sailfish for posting a few with me in them so I can prove to my wife that I was there.   :smt044    I ended the weekend with some nice lings, a cabbie and assorted blacks and greenlings.  On tournament day I caught almost nothing but lings,  (Bighammer halloween rocks!)  mostly underlings but I put back a few in the 25 inch range as well.   Kept two lings, one cabbie and two black rockies which gave me a completely crap total for the tourney but a great time!  :smt004

My one fish story of the weekend..   on monday I was fishing straight out about half way to the red can,  drifting a swimbait when I felt some weight on the line.. no hit really so I thought it might be snagged.   I give it a couple tugs and realized it wasnt snagged but was very heavy so I winched it up thinking it was a big sea star or some kelp...    got to my mono topshot and I see its a fish.. but wtf?  Its a fish with no head and 2 tails??    Got it to to the surface and realized Id caught a cabbie which looked about 20 inches and its entire head was engulfed in the mouth of a lingziilla!   I guess the ling was too busy trying to eat the cabbie to actually fight because it never took any line on the way up.  lol.

Soo..   I tried to reach my gaff but the fish (both of them) all of a sudden started thrashing like hell so instead I grabbed my net which was a bit too small for both of those fish at once..   got it under them after a try or two and pulled it up..  both inside.    When I got it over my yak,  the ling went WHAT THE....  let go the cabbie and jumped straight up and out of my net, landing on my legs.   I tried to put the net down on top of it and grab the fish by hand but its next move was straight forward and into the water.   :smt013  Then to top off the whole thing,  I look down to see the cabbie had spit the hook, went balistic in my lap and also back into the water.   both making a huge splash.    Complete kayak Cluster@#%$%.  LOL!   My buddy Greg (bluenative) was about 20 yards away and I can still see him cracking up.   My other team mate saw it, but said he  saw my net out,  then I went down in a big trough and he lost sight of me... heard a huge splash and thought Id  gone in.

Anyway.. at least it was fun.

Thanks again Erik on a great tourney and to all who came and made it the epic weekend it was!

Thanks man, but that wasn't me with the monster Hali... :smt044 I was hoping for back to backs, but unfortunately a shitload of greenling and underling don't count for much. :smt012

Thanks to Eric for throwing this all together. And thank you to the Hangovers for adopting me to the team. Shellback Jeff and I toughed it out until around 12:30pm when we finally succumbed to the cold. That dude kicked some serious ass for his first time rockfishing ever. I Couldn't feel my goddamned hands after the first couple of hours, which made tying knots, reeling in piddly greenling, and taking a piss almost impossible. Congrats to the winners! You guys are studs!

Great pic, Craig. Thanks!

Derik had a fabulous time, and I could tell he was excited all week-end. This was his first big trip of many. I was kinda bummed to leave early on Sunday, but Derik was getting antsy being cooped up in the room all day and I decided it would be best to bail while he was asleep. Worked out perfect because he slept all the way to Cloverdale, where I needed to stop for gas anyway. After that we had sushi in Windsor.

First and Foremost ....Thank You Eric for another great adventure! Congratulations to all the winning anglers but I think everyone who attended was a winner. The food  and friendship at the potlucks and throughout the campsite was off the hook. On our drive up we stopped and fished some fresh water with Cameron to break up the drive and were rewarded. See you all at the next event....Thank You ALL

Here are some pics from Monday. It was like Alaska. The views, the birds, the fish, the weather. It snowed on the peaks around Shelter Cove after a huga shower passed to the north. I found a pinnacle that came up to 22 ft from 60 ft. We worked that spot like crazy for about 2 hours. Between 3 of us we caught over 40 fish off that spot. I should have been where Darius was though. hahahaah.

Friday was fun handing out tournament packets, seeing returning GS'ers and meeting new ones, and the safety meeting at the launch was sunny and warm with beer and several dozen good friends mixing for a good hour after I gave a bit of info about the launch and the nearshore reef.  That evening was a blur as I tried to track down as many of the participants as I could, and the aforementioned beers fueled that madness...  Saturday after getting over my seasickness I hung with the fam for some boogieboarding in the Cove.  Multiple osprey were fishing amongst all the folks playing on the beach and at the ramp.  One osprey dove and scored about a 12" rainbow perch - another osprey started fighting for the catch, the fish was dropped, and neither bird seemed to notice where it ended up.  I jogged down the beach and grabbed it, hoping I could toss it up to them, but the birds lost interest.  My wife and daughter did their best to revive the fish and it seemed to go on its way!  Later we had more sunshine and a mild breeze for the first potluck - Brandi's hamachi was good stuff, Martin's Gimme Shelter 5 homebrew didn't disappoint, and all seemed to have a good time.  Sunday came and our team had agreed on launching at 6AM sharp.  Brandi was lagging, so we ditched her - she's tough enough to handle it though, and she found us on the water after a little radio assistance from Dan the Boogieman.  Even though it was windy and very cold the fishing was great.  Dom and I were working the 'Magic of the Chove' - I kept salmon gear on the entire weekend.  After a while our team split into sub-teams and I was out at the Whistle with Jason/redwoodfox.  The wind started to come up and I had to start making my way in to get the check-in station open by 11.  I heard on the radio that Jason had a huge halibut follow his bait up from the depths, and it was a preview of things to come...  I got in by the Bell and wished I could keep fishing, but by the time I got on the beach it became evident that I was the coldest I'd ever been on the water!  I stumbled around, got out of there quickly, got to The Tides, stowed gear quickly, jogged toward my room to grab a shower and even 15 minutes after getting out of the water my legs weren't working...   :smt009  A quick and very hot bath and I was sprinting back to the launch with the scorecards, my assistant, and an EZ-up.  The scoring went very well - 3 straight hours of calling out inches and my daughter calling back numbers, checking numbers, re-checking, having people measure their own fish in front of me on my tailgate under the EZ-up, stuffing down a sandwich that my wife brought down around 1PM, and enjoying the nice stringers and big smiles coming off the water.  G-Whiz was the early leader with 5 species, then Patrick Leepin was on top with an all catch and release score, then Ravensblack and Saltydog checked in with amazingly close scores.  When Terry brought that monster 47.75" Pacific Halibut ashore along with 5 other species it was apparent that we'd have one hell of a fat winning score - as it should be, Terry erased any doubt about who would be champion.

1st place - Terry Saufferer / Jacks - 939.75 points!
     - 28.5" lingcod
     - 19" rockfish
     - 13.25" greenling
     - 20.25" cabezon
     - 11.5" perch
     - 47.75" halibut
2nd place - Craig Davis / Ravensblack - 744.75 points
     - 24.5" ling plus release bonus of one inch
     - 15" rock +1" bonus
     - 16.25" greenie +1
     - 20.5" cab +1
     - 12.75" perch +1
Craig took SOTD - Sportsman of the Day - for the highest C&R only score
3rd place - Jim Jackson / Saltydog - 742.75 points
     - 27.75" ling +1
     - 17.5" rock +1
     - 14.25" green +1
     - 18.25" cab +1
     - 13.5" perch +1
4th place - Daniel Shim / dpshim - 735 points
3 of 5 fish released
5th place - Patrick Leepin / HOLY TOLEDO - 715.25 points
all fish released
6th place - Sonny Nguyen / Sailfish - 706.25 points
2 of 5 fish released
7th place - Glen Armas / G-Whiz - 655 points
8th place - Shannon Jay / SRJ - 610.25 points
9th place - Domenic Belli / Domenic - 579.5 points
10th place - Jeff Ornellas / Shellback - 573 points

Right off hand, I think that BigJim won with around 650 last year - this year's fishing was much better!

The largest and second largest lings ever caught at GS – 37.5” by Jim Meier / Rockfish, and 36.5” by Jeff Richards / JWR.  A few others over 30”.  Several rockies over 20”.  Several cabs over 20”.  Big greenies…  Everything but a salmon and flounder, and I’ll bet those will get caught next year.

I was so frickin tired when I got home yesterday, but what a blast. IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!

Once again we partied way too hard Friday night. There was no way I was going to bed early with all the good times and friends around. It was great to hang out with so many great people. The people were awesome. The food was off the hook, major props to Zilla. The fishing was good, although the weather sucked Sunday. I could have done without the nonstop rain. It was wild having such good weather on Saturday and then the monsoon on Sunday. That's the coast for you.

As far as the fishing, well...I woke up on Sunday with a major headache and the rest of the crew wasn't motivated to fish. We didn't stay up very late and really didn't drink much the night before so I'm not sure why that happened. Oh well. We finally made it out after a while and I caught a ton of greenlings and underlings and one black. I did have one nice ling to the surface, but the hook popped out when it hit the surface. That's fishing.

On my way back in I got tossed 90 degrees and dumped by a freak wave. I was a short distance out from the breakwall when it happened. Montana came over and gave me a hand getting back on. The power boat that was in the area headed over to help too, but Montana and I got it before they made it. I'd never had a wave turn me so quickly. It may have not happened if I'd remembered to unhook the little bungee cord that secures the rudder. I couldn't put it down and I was already fighting the waves. Another item on the pre-flight checklist. I learned another lesson that's really not news to many of you, but some of us learn the hard way. I had a hard time getting over the edge with my PFD pockets full of crap. My radio was the biggie. Time for more practice with all the gear on and move the radio. The rod leash was also wrapped around my legs so it took a moment to get that undone. At least I didn't loose anything. What amazed me was that never got cold. Not at all. I got lucky.

We also went back out Monday for a bit and caught some more fish, but no monsters for us. Still, great times.

Thanks to everyone who made this so awesome. I can't wait until next year.

Monday morning I picked around in the rocks with my son Collin, Domenic, Don and his son Kuba, and Etienne.  Everyone found some abs, and we found enough legal ones for people to take some home to eat.  Got the family packed up and on the road, did more cleaning up and packing, saw Darius bring in his trophy to the launch, then headed out on the water with Domenic for a few hours.  I trolled chovie behind my flasher and DeepSix almost the entire time and brought in 8 blacks (6 nice ones including a bomber 20"), and a limit of lings including a 33" hitchhiker - all on the salmon trolling gear!!!  That evening was quiet as most had gone home and I had my room to myself.  I got my first good night's sleep in days and got up to finish cleaning and packing today.  What a blast!  I can't wait to do some work on plans to make next year better.   :smt001

Eric - The amount of energy you poured into this event was amazing.  A great time had by all.  Thank you very much.  This event is a permanent fixture on my calendar.

Thanks to the NCKA family for welcoming my buddy NovatoDave to the event.  He's hooked and can't say enough about how great everyone was.

Salmon trolling was the most productive for me.  This is my personal best ling taken on a watermelon apex on a diver.  Thought for sure it was a salmon but when the diver surfaced and no color I wondered what I had.  Then the head showed up and it was gaff time.

Great Job AbKing!!!

Epic Event...  Great To see so many, sorry not to make it over to camp, knew it was danger with an important task of getting one of my youngest out on the water, Rockfishing for the first time, in possible in claimate weather...

and it was, Kuba did such a great job and I'm really proud of him for getting out there with me Sunday...

I asked him later if he thought something was wrong when we were going out on the water, when people were coming back in...?

He said he thought something might be up, but he also knew how much work I had put into getting us out there.....   :smt010

We made it to the front of the Hotel, wind, slight cross swell coming out of the cove, and then cold....  I had him dressed well, but I saw guys in drysuits throwing in the towel...
10 to 15 min of fishing....  :cold

Time to get him back in while the getting is good...

Get him back to the hotel, get a bath going, he's happy...

Back to fishing!!!...  Finally, Late start, But I'm going!!!  It was great... bout 2 1/2 hour of good action,,,
lots of little lings, couple keepers, kept one, Cabbies and Blacks oh My!!!  I had no plan of getting back for the 2pm weigh in and was just going to fish...  noticing I'm the last out here now...

Here comes the wind, rain, and power... it got snotty quick and it was " Pretty Kool..." sloshing thru that rough stuff with the Outback... Good Times..."

Got to try Abing for the first time with Kuba under the lead of the Abking Himself... with his son in tow... Got up early and poked around... Kuba did great and even twisted up his foot slipping on rocks, and stuck it out again anyway...  we came away with 2....

Great times and wish I was still there... was just starting to slow down....

Funny, we left today about 12:00....

Warming up and the Ocean turned to a lake.....   :smt004

 Figures...

Think I'll head back.... Rockfish, Halibut and Salmon oh My!!!

 Truly Epic Fishing Possibilities....

and Always Epic NCKA....

  Strong Work AbKing!!!        :smt006

9th. place: A-HULLS
Total score: 306.25 divided by 7=
                  43.75 Team Score
(AlsHobie,Sara, BigJim, FM1, Cochino, Lapu-Lapu, SinCoast, dpshim, LingKing

I think Dan scored 735 and Ryan got ~500. So ~1541/5 including my 0 = 308 ?    I was too damn cold to take pics of my fish but got 6 lings, a handful of rockies, a barely legal cab, and a buffalo sculpin...kept 1 ling. Yeah weaksauce. But I don't like being hypothermic. Almost rather eat balut in the sun. Almost. So I went home and took a shower instead. Sleepytime ensued....D'OH!   :smt015

Stop the presses, CHECK THE RULES:
The scorecard sign-up were to be completed by Sat. night.
dpshim and lingKing were not signed up on the card.(I have proof)
Also, If an angler did not fish or check in fish, they received a 0 score and could not be scratched from the card before the calculations.
Nice try Pat, next year make sure you sign up everyone on the team and only those that are going to fish and check in fish. :smt002

Eric thanks for putting on another epic event.  Your hardwork in organizing and hosting GS5 are greatly appreciated.

Ravensblack congratulations on winning SOTD.  I also want to thank you for showing me how to process a halibut.  Give me a call when the ocean and wind lay down and we will hit the ranch with my brother.

It was cold and rainy when I headed out to the red can.  I started with a 4 oz diamond jig and caught several small rockfish before I hooked into something big.  After several runs and minutes I finally get it to the surface and it is a monster ling.  I grab my gaff and as I set to gaff the monster it looks me in the eye and shakes her head no, no, no not today Terry and spits the hook and down she goes taking my spirits with her.

A few minutes later I hook into another ling and this time I just land it by hand and put it on my clip.  Species #1 down.

After another half hour passes and several more small rockfish I change over to a BIG HAMMER SWIMBAIT on a 4oz jig head.  It doesn"t take long before it gets hammered and the battle begins.  After several runs in 15 minutes I finally get my first glimpse of the beast, a big butt.  The big butt looks at me and my kayak and doesn't like what it sees and goes straight back to the bottom.  Five minutes later I get it back up to my yak and this time it sees my gaff and once again straight back to the bottom it went.  Another 5 minutes passes before I get the big butt back to the surface and this time the big butt looks tired and allows me to set my gaff and put it on my clip.  Species #2 down.

After losing my only BIG HAMMER SWIMBAIT  I change back to the diamond jig.  Note to self need to bring more BIG HAMMER SWIMBAITS next time.  It doesn't take long before I land a decent vermilion.  Species #3 down.

A short time later I land a cabby.  Species #4 down.

Now I start targeting greenlings and it doesn't take long before I land one.  Species #5 down.

The wind picks up and I decide to head back in and try for a perch.  I modify my gear and shortly after I land a perch.  Species # 6 down.

Once again thank you Eric for all of your hardwork.

If anyone has OTW pics of any Big Hammer swimbaits please send them to me. I am compiling an article to send Big Hammer about GS5. I will try to up their sponsorship for our events. Craig

This was my second time participating in a GS event, but last year I only came for the day. I learned the BEST way to attend a GS event is to stay the whole weekend!  To meet and talk story, to put screen names to real names and faces, to enjoy sharing good foods and just having a good time - priceless. I am a freediver, I feel I do much better with getting dinner by looking my fish in the eye.  Even then, everyone, I mean EVERYONE, was willing to help me get ready to with my fishing gear and kayak for GS5.  THANK YOU for giving me a warm welcome and support. I learned so much!! Including to wear better gear to stay warmer and drier for the next torrential rain.... I don't think I have ever been so cold in my life!! I even caught some respectable fish despite the fact I was late joining up with my team.

Congratulations to all the winners and their fine catches!

THANK YOU ERIC for putting on such a successful and thoroughly enjoyable event!! :groupwave

Terry, you showed us all the potential that Shelter Cove really has. That halibut is the coolest thing I have seen yet kayak fishing. If anyone has OTW pics of any Big Hammer swimbaits please send them to me. I am compiling an article to send Big Hammer about GS5. I will try to up their sponsorship for our events. Craig

Great time all around. I am a little late get into this post since I was spending the last few days "sledging".  Reaaly didn't get much of a chance to hang out and party with everyone but was able to spend some quality time with a fwe freinds. My mission was to get in as much fishing as I could and was able to accomplish that.

18 total lingcods 29.5 biggest
8 cabby  24" biggest
6 greenlings 15.5 biggest (none in tourney) :smt010
way to many rockfish  19.5" biggest
3 sur perches 10.5 biggest
one whale breach within 15 feet of me in 30' of water    :smt044
one blown head gasket on buddies motor ( that is the guy paddling the zodiac during the potluck)

well I am glad everyone made it safe off the water once again and hopefully everyone has thawed out from sunday fsihing bynow  :smt044

I'm very sorry for the late reply, as I've been busy catching up on work and trying to make time to clean my stuff and spend time with my gf. Now, I need to catch up on sleep/rest lol!! :D

Anyways, I want to thank Eric, his daughter and others who contributed in making GS5 a great success! From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!! :D

This was my first GS event and definitely will not be my last ;) It was great to meet many of our brothers/sisters and to share many wonderful moments together. I just wish I had more time to meet everyone, spend more time with y'all, as well as spend more time fishing there.

One thing I learned is that fishing is tough to do after spending time with the A-Hulls, they sure know how to party lol!! Waking up on tourney day was tough, esp with a lil hangover  :smt003 I even forgot my camera, messing up my game plan of c&ring all my fish. With 5 species caught, I decided to come back in to get my camera and try to upgrade for the last 1.5 hrs left. I have to admit though, it was tough to get back out once you're back on land lol!  Once I heard that Terry caught that Pacific, I knew it was game over and decided to paddle back in to get warm and dry  :smt003

Congrats to Terry for taking first  (and well-deserved to win :D )and to all the others that placed, wtf'ng!!! It was a great honor to place in the top 10 with elite anglers, as I knew it would be a difficult challenge to win the tourney. However I was hoping to win the yak so that I could donate that to next month's PIF, as the A-Hulls made the pact to do so if any of us won. What I really wanted more was that sweet hawg trough :smt007 Well, there's always next year ;)

Craig: congrats and taking sportsman on the tourney, as you truly deserved that title my brother! :D Your generous donation to the PIF just shows the big heart you have  :beer3 You and many others here have shown great sportsmanship through many c&r;  thank you all for molding me to become a better sportsman and fisherman :D

Nothing but love to y'all!!! :D

WOW!!! This event gets better every year. Thanks so much Eric. Your work and planning are very much appreciated. I had a great time.

Congrats to the winners and anyone who got on the board. The display of fishing skill and determination was nothing short of amazing. It is an honor and privilege to fish with such skilled anglers. I think the Sonoma and North Coast boys should start a pro circuit and have it out with each other like clash of the titans.  :smt005 For me it was a slow day of fishing for many reasons but I had a great time. I was so deep into hypothermia that Etienne was talking to me and I didn't know he was.  :smt005 I did my best to pull off Jack's taco bar vision with Baja fish tacos and Korean pulled pork tacos but next time I will print out assembly directions because people seemed be confused on the assembly.  :smt044 :smt044 It was fun throwing the chili marinated fish on the grill and gassing out the garage. May challenge Jack and Andy for a taco shack throw down at Albion.

Monday Etienne went ab picking and I launched solo in a very confused sea at 630 AM. Had the whole ocean to myself and hooked a nice verm. Then the swell layed down and the sun came out and illuminated the Lost coast. It was one of those religious moments on the the ocean where you feel blessed to be alive and out there. Then the Big Hammer team, Craig and Darius showed up and ruined it.  :smt044 Just kidding, it was good fishing with you guys and was really happy when Darius called in the pac butt. I had to hit the road to beat the rush hour traffic and got home in time to cook up some fresh fish for Karen. Life is good.

Back to work today, still cleaning and stowing gear this morning and this evening, busy with the kids, still beat from the weekend, longing to be out on the water trolling...  I just got a breather and watched BigJim's video.  That brought a smile to my face and allowed me to take a deep breath and appreciate it all for a minute.  When you build up to something like this event, and you focus really intensely on getting it all done, and you pull it off and see all the happiness and brotherhood, and your family had fun and is proud of you, and you know that you've really done something good - that's when you might experience something very unique, a moment in life where even though you're physically and emotionally worked over you feel like you can achieve anything you set your mind to.  There are tears that come to me at these times, and they are a manifestation of the best things that life has to offer.  If I can ever manage to get over myself and my obsession with the conquests of fishing it is these moments of raw emotion and pure Love that I will continue to strive to find and savor.  Thanks, everyone, for letting me experience the wonders of life with you.    :smt001 :smt010 :smt001

I think I was the last one to see ole George and Sledge. They were still out on the water on Tues sledging away the day OTW. It was sad to leave them since the fishing was getting great , ole George finally was able to get on a ling fix by landing around 8 on Tuesday alone. I'm sure they are heading their way down south by now but you can never tell when you'll leave with Sledge around. Could be still camped out next to each other right now.  :smt052

Hey all,

a ripping time at the cove!. Met a bunch of NCKA'ers that I missed last year. A bunch of bad asses to go out into that weather on Sunday. Super proud to be included in this event, fishing on the Local Connection team(3rd place team finish!). A better crew of folks you coulnd't find anywhere. Loved hanging with you all.

Special Props:

Abking for- doing what you do and spreading your vibe- it is infectious!
Claire- Thanks for helping your dad, your math skills were most helpful
Zilla- Overall ripping dude, master at the grill and a super real person
All the party crew at the campground- had a blast with you all
Congrats to Terry and Craig for strong one two finishes.
Brandi- Appreciate your candidness and our conversations

Overall thanks to those I hung with. See you all soon enough

A Big Thank You to Eric & His Family hosting such a special event!  Being at Shelter Cove with the NCKA group was pure heaven. Pam had so much fun with Eileen, Linda and Patty that I score big time WAF points, all while fishing. Had fun getting schooled by Aaron (roughster) unlike me, dude is much smarter than the fish. On Monday Daviator and me enjoyed some good fishing together in better weather, we sure hated to quit. My first Verm and my bigest black rockfish were captured. After packing and taking a needed shower, Sonny gave a special treat at the Tea House. I hang out with the best people. Jed I thank you so much for dragging the yak trailer, I hope both Dave and your wife will forgive you for returning so late.

Congrats Terry on kicking butt (both kinds), and to all the top ten finishers. BigJim, you should be a professional speaker, choked me up a little. It's easy to see how committed you are to the cause. And WTG Eric for the BIG donation. I especially liked when some of the winners donated thier prizes to PIF. That's a brotherhood!
I got to hang out with friends, meet new friends, drink a bunch of beer, ate like a King (many thanks to the ab divers and crabbers and taco makers and BBQers and deep fryers). Shout out to Zilla for the many hours spent cooking and Guitarzan-Ben forall the good tunes.
Oh yeah, good fishing too.

sorry for such a late post.. hope guys are still reading and enjoying the stories...

Abking...good to see you and family..relish in the fact that your efforts help put together so much positive energy and good will amonst such a fine group of people...heartfelt thanks for all your energy and time from all of us.

great seeing so many old faces as well as making new friends.. Enjoyed as always the company of sr  Loose Screws crew... hobiedave, martin, jedmo and sonny as well as welcoming  new addition with G-wiz, Glenn.  thanks to Hobiedave and Glenn for putting so much  into  their campers and providing so much  hospitality.
as dave mentioned above...the Cove is such a magical place to fish for us..yes it is a long way up but caravaning up togehter made the trip so much more enjoyable.. As such  I was determined to spend as much time OTW  as possible..

highlights for the weekend included having gray whale breach near me at the light house and first time catching some species like verm...greenling, legal sized ling, and sharing meals together..
thanks sonny for treating us at the Tea House on Monday..

caught the potluck on Saturday and enjoyed Martin's much anticipated home brew with customized label...very cool..
but on Sunday I missed most of the ceremony and food cuz I was tied up at the cleaning station...the commercial charter fishermen  came in with big butts in the 40-60# range and lots of mongo Lings... I plucked up a lot of discarded meat from those carcusses...especially the halibut collars and cheeks..so i returned home with about an equal amount of meat.. too good of an opportunity to pass up plus I hate to see such coveted meat go to waste..
spent most of tuesday processing the meat and vacuum packing for many meals to come but my family is complaining that my garage stinks..

have to lay low now from the fishing scene...as I wiped out all WAF pts...the boss's chill was about as cold as what I felt on the water sunday..but it was worth it.
when the smoke clears though  I think we will need to make a 5.1 trip as we  don't want to wait til next year to experience the Cove.

thanks to all who made the weekend so enjoyable.
dave

Thanks Eric for another awesome event!

The Fishing and Camaraderie was unparallelled, you can't been the NCKA crew;  even when the A-hulls show up.

Two pot lucks were better than one...Jedmo's ceviche on Saturday and GB2's tacos on Sunday were delicious.  Someone needs to post up the molasses pineapple upside down cake recipe, I loved that stuff.

See ya next year!
or hopefully sooner....

Hey Everybody!

Just wanted to extend my thanks as well to all that made this awesome event happen.

My bro and I had an amazing time not only fishing but experiencing camaraderie and good times with NCKA'ers...

Eric, thanks for putting it all together and making it happen. Your daughter is awesome for helping you out all day long as well.

Here are a few more pics my wife took.  Glad she went and had a great time with Pam and Eiliene.  Would like to thank Glen and Eiliene for keeping us warm and let us party in their RV Sunday night.  Me and my wife had a great time drinking Pina Colada's with the Loose Screws.  Thanks again to Sonny for treating us to a great lunch.  Hope to see you all at Albion.   :smt001
