Shimano Lucanus Jig System

I ran across this online, but maybe someone who went to one of the fishing shows recently has seen it in real life.

It's the Shimano Lucanus Jig System.  Seems that Shimano has adopted some fancy Japanese jig system for the US market with an emphasis on bottom fishing.

The system consists of new whacky squid looking jigs with hooks like the butterfly jigs..

The system also includes a suped-up Shimano Calcutta called the Calcutta TE JV for the reel.


And finally, the various new Tescata rods that are part of the "system" look like longer versions of the Trevala rods with lighter power and extra fast actions.

Anyway, it looks cool, but I don't think I have the $$ to afford this system for catching rockfish.

The jigs run about $14-$18 each.
The reel runs about $450 and the rod runs about $200.

They even sell special "Lucanus monofiliment leaders".

Can't wait for some company in China to start selling knock-off of the jigs for ~$6 each so I can give them a try.

Saw it at the Fred Hall show - they were advertising this stuff HARD.  It appeared that Shimano was one of the major sponsors of the show as they had Lucanus banners everywhere.

My first impressions - the hooks are REALLY tiny for the size of the jig, skirt looks like it'd get shredded in no time up here, and the jigs are just plain too expensive!

WTF.... that's Shimano throwing big marketing dollars at another jig idea they stole from Japan and packaging it as a "jig system" so you can buy a new rod, reel, and outrageously price jig.  Shimano must think we fishermen are all a bunch of suckers!

However, I must admit... I've suckered in a few too many times myself.  The high we get from buying a new rod or reel must be similar to women buy shoes or handbags.

Gotta admit Chuck... while almost no one on here bought a Butterfly jig, a lot of us got the Trevalas.     I'm pretty happy with that component.


The Lucanus rods are pretty cool too - slightly longer than Trevalas & same TC4 composition.  Those anglers with a penchant for longer rods might get a kick out of em.  I really like the x-fast taper on them.   

Too bad they're double the cost of the trevalas.   

Oh yeah... Shimano didn't have to sell me on the Trevala.  $99 for a superlight, bombproof jigging rod, with a cool ergo grip was a no-brainer for me.  I think I was the first guy to bite on that deal.

I'm sure Shimano's Lucanus rods are as sweet as you say , but I doubt they'll get me to bite this time when you have Okuma Baidarka Kayak rods going for between $99 and $130.

Gotta love shimano.....a thousand dollar jigging system for rockfish.  Can't wait to see them revolutionize the bluegillin market with a rubber bug system.

I can see it now... the micro-lucanus panfish system.

A scaled down lucanus-like jig about 3/4" long and weighing in at 1/6th oz, with 2 size 12 stinger hooks, and costing only $9.99 per jig.

A TC4 construction 10 ft ultralight.  Let's see it's longer so...let's set the price at $300

While I do enjoy the name of your invented reel, since it is a spin cast, it would not begin with the letter "C". Instead, it needs to reflect both the  "S" in spin, and "C" in casting - thus, "SansCojones"*


*Bonus points for using two languages!

Was wondering WTF "Lucanus" was all about so Wiki'd it. Turns out it's the genus name of stag beetles.
I guess we can file this under all the other funny names Japanese companies give their products.
