Hi Jenn I didn’t see you out there but was fishing yesterday in SC.  I used a head lamp and wore it backwards coming out of the harbor. Good idea to have a light on the kayak too and wear bright colors. Really was hoping for more bait heard of some macs being caught but had no luck. Only caught live smelt. Finished the day with a 24 in halibut.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Leader length for halibut
« on: June 27, 2023, 09:01:03 PM »
Just run straight bait I catch the same without a dodger/flasher/hoochie plus they get tangled and are more work to tie. I run about 4 ft leader also when landing the halibut I usually choke up on my rod meaning hold it in the middle so it’s easier to gaff the fish.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Anybody rolling without a FF?
« on: June 26, 2023, 12:00:14 PM »
I have a love/hate relationship with fish finders. So many things can break on them, the batteries, the wiring, and the fish finder and they take up room. Some of my best days have been when i rolled without one. finding bait and structure is the most useful reasons for having them so i keep it.

I think you need more White Sea bass blood that will buff it out

Fish Talk / Re: Rockfish Reg. Petition Workgroup - Need your help

I might be the minority here but I don't have a problem with a shorter San Francisco region season. Rockfish take a long time to mature and hopefully we will get some bigger fish in the future.

Descenders should be mandatory and a lower limit on rock fish would be a good idea too.

July 16th is just around the corner and if you really need your fix try taking the drive down to the central region.

The most painful fish to not be able to catch this year is salmon, I would love just a 1 month (July) 1 fish limit season. But that's another topic all together.

Good luck Paul.

striper, shark and bat ray very likely to catch right now.

halibut and sturgeon possible but not as common.

You should try it and let us know. Halibut like more water visibility, kinda muddy right now and sturgeon usually come through after rains in the winter.

Thanks for this. I just completed it. I was at the last meeting on sturgeon that CDFW put on and it’s not looking good for them.

What would you think contributed to that many rescues? Inexperience? Lack of preparation?

inexperience- yes lack of prep- yes and lots of wind. may/june is usually the windiest months in the bay

Looks like these dates are available now for 7-14 people. I didn’t see the 1-6 person option available.
