General Talk / Scammers
« on: March 25, 2024, 02:15:19 PM »
 :smt013 :smt013  :smt013

Had someone call from 408-963-5952 and say they were from the Santa Clara county Sheriffs department and said I had two warrants for failure to appear for jury duty summons.  They were very insistent that I was in serious trouble and needed to prove that I wasn't the one that signed a certified letter for the summons.  They started instructing me to stay on the phone and get ready to drive down to the office while still on the phone.  I started getting suspicious there, but as soon as they said that I had a bail that would need to be paid I decided to accidentally drop the call, and then try and call the number back which went to a empty mail box. They called repeatedly and asked why I got disconnected and I confronted them as scammers, and hung up.  They texted a lot of profanity in response.

Dang, I cant believe that I belived them for a minute there... Hopefully no one else falls for this.

Got a notification from the SC Port Commission:

https://www.santacruzharbor.org/files/1cc8e0c9b/Local+Notice+to+Mariners.pdf
Quote
The United States Coast Guard is proposing to remove the Mile Buoy and replace it with a mark on the chart. There would no longer be any buoy or other permanent marker in the waters along the Santa Cruz coastline.

The Coast Guard distributed a Local Notice to Mariners describing the proposed removal (see page 2 of the notice). They are requesting comments from all interested parties by Wednesday, April 3, 2024.

Comments may be directed to LTJG Samantha Hu at (510) 437-2983 or via email at Samantha.G.Koval@uscg.mil.

The Coast Guard is particularly interested in any rationale relating to why the buoy is necessary for safe navigation in spite of the current availability and affordability of electronic navigation equipment (e.g. GPS).

Sincerely,

Holland MacLaurie

Port Director

Just saw an ad for this reel that has a option to send data via bluetooth to your phone.  Now you can REALLY geek out on your casting and have data to prove it!  :smt005

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / BFS Trout Setups - worth the expense?
« on: December 07, 2023, 03:53:26 PM »
Started looking at BFS setups after a few videos of casting these things looking like a lot of fun.  But ouch it seems like any worth while reel is gonna cost some $$$. Is there a minimum recommended for BFS or really you need to bite the bullet and go with a Shimano, the cheapest being $165 and some going over $400?  I like trout fishing, but that seems a bit much for freshwater gear.  KastKing budget with Shimano tastes might not be the best for BFS setups I'm guessing. :smt005

Kayak Sailing / Inflatable Catamaran?

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/boa/d/san-francisco-14-foot-inflatable/7693066440.html

It looks like a neat toy, but would rather have a fully decked out AI with motor for the price.

General Talk / I bought a Hobiecat 18
« on: November 05, 2023, 08:25:50 AM »
I couldn't pass up a deal that I saw on Craigslist for a Hobiecat 18 and trailer for only $200 bucks.  There's definitely work to be done, but it's in pretty decent shape!  I already have a list of problems to overcome just to take it home from the SC Harbor parking lot  :smt005. Namely first, I have no idea how to take down the mast, or if it's even doable single handed.  Trailers in rough shape, but I think it could make it home.  Hopefully registering it wont be too much a hassle, been a long time since I had to do that.

General Fishing Tips / Bait outside of SC harbor
« on: August 10, 2023, 09:18:28 AM »
Last couple days keep seeing boats go out the harbor entrance and stop, which I think means they are catching bait.  Last time I tried in close it was very small anchovies, maybe they have grown up or maybe the mackerel moved in close.  Curious if anyone has any clues...
