General Talk / Re: I've Gone Strapless

I thought it looked a little short. My thought too if it was too short that you could find a tube that would work. Looks like a great setup overall - thanks for the info.

Cheers,
Brad

Interesting setup. Do you think you could use it like the Thule Outrigger or Yakima Boatloader Evo to help in loading the boat? Extend the outside bar/rack all the way, lean the nose of the kayak  onto it and then lift the rear up? I couldn't tell how far out it can extend.

Cheers,
Brad

I've tried it but the arm was not long enough but I've seen some on using a long bar by inserting where the arms go it and using it as a assist. I'll be looking for a metal bar that's going to fit.

Try marine goop - I've had good luck with it in the past.

Some have made custom crank arms out of aluminum billet stock -- I think Nowhereman did this. It might be quicker than waiting on the parts to come into stock. Good luck!

The kayak launch area and all the parking on that side of the marina is currently off limits while they are doing construction. There is public parking in a gravel lot on the the other side by the docks. More info here - https://www.ssf.net/departments/parks-recreation/parks-recreation-facility-projects/oyster-point-2c

Water was milk chocolate and 54 degrees. Very little bait or bird activity and no biters.

How’d I miss you Eddie? Been checking from bridgeway to clipper since 6:30 for nada. One guy had about 15 he got first thing at Clipper then nothing since. Talked to 4 boaters and they had one between all them.

to each their own. I have no interest in motorizing, but don't hold it against those that do. I will say that I prefer they go electric instead of gas powered  though to avoid the noise pollution and the smell of the exhaust.

Why not lay up a band of fiberglass with resin where the collar will go, let it set up and then sand down to the diameter you need? The band will add a little strength to the area around the collar and you should be able to get a nice, tight fit. Just a thought.

As others have said make sure you've been feeding it regularly leading up to the planned breadmaking session so it is good and active. If temp is an issue, your oven with the light on makes for a nice and warm proofing box.

Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Good Kayak Ocean Fishing With A Launch Ramp
« on: December 07, 2023, 08:10:27 AM »
There's a ramp on the bay side at Doran in Bodega Bay - camp and launch from there. Miller's launch on Tomales as well.

Brad

I crabbed Doran on Sunday -- winds were up from the start of the day. Ended up with 4 including two jumbos. The numbers were as good or better for those casting snares from the beach by the jetty FWIW.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Kayak Crabbing with a 3 y/o

Sounds like you know the ocean well and can judge conditions. As others have said Doran is usually very protected on everything but south swells and south winds. Inside the harbor at HMB might be another option - just stay away from the boating lanes. Rock crab are probably more likely but it would be a safe environment for a first outing. Launch from the old pier and you won't have to get close to the boating lanes.

Brad

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Mirage Drive V2 Fin Mast Info
« on: September 29, 2023, 09:28:25 AM »
The same operation works on the GT drives as well -- my fin shaft snapped flush with the hub so there was nothing to grab to back it out. Cut off a 1/4" of plastic and with vice grips I was able to remove the base. It's been running fine for over a year with the trimmed down sprocket hub without an issue. There is still a lot of material there to support the base of the fin shaft.

Brad

I've only had the pacifics with the green squiggles on their backs but love them. They grill up nicely like sardines. Sadly, nothing would touch my sabiki when I was out at HMB over the weekend. I was hoping to make live bait for halibut, but also to get some macks to bring home for the grill.

Cheers,
Brad
