General Fishing Tips / Re: How many of you have 2-rod stamp?« on: April 17, 2024, 08:15:38 PM »
I would only want a second rod to catch more bait, not more rockfish. Just drag a sabiki around behind me. I can't imagine trying not to snag while trying to drift/jig two rods for rockfish or lingcod, haha. And yes, a lot of people confuse the reg about when they can/can't have two rods, or which fish they can keep if they did have two lines in. Also, for some reason, this made me think of Goldeneye... 4

SF Bay and San Pablo Bay both only allow one rod. Ocean allows as many as you want (no stamp required!) until you start fishing for rockfish/lingcods, then it becomes one rod only. Up-River from the Carquinez Bridge, and most lakes/rivers allow two rods, with the stamp.
I mostly troll from the kayak. If it is legal for me to troll with two rods, I do. Stripers and trout. In the ocean, I think it would be more difficult to not get tangled, but in the delta or in a lake, it isn't too bad. When I hook a fish, I give a few extra pedal strokes, then gently turn the kayak towards the side that got hooked up. Sometimes I will keep pedaling and reel in the other rod, but only if I think it will get tangled, which really only happens if I drift back down towards the lure. I will also use the second rod if just bait fishing, either anchored in the kayak or boat, or from shore. Or, have one with bait and casting a lure with the other. Just depends on the species/day/location. 5
General Talk / Re: I've Gone Strapless« on: April 16, 2024, 08:09:31 PM »
Nice, those look pretty easy. Funny, I didn't know this existed, but after I saw this post I've seen three of them in the wild, haha.

General Fishing Tips / Re: mm thickness for farmer john style wetsuit« on: April 16, 2024, 04:18:51 PM »
I have a 4/3 Farmer Jon, works well for me. Can bundle with jackets/pants of chilly out, and isn't too hot until it's over about 65 put, which is about the point when I just go in shorts or synthetic material pants anyway.
For feet, I have 7mm booties for when it's cold, and 3mm neoprene socks under Crocs/sandals in medium temps, and then just bare feet above about 60 or so. 7
Introductions / Re: Hey« on: April 13, 2024, 01:52:45 PM »
That's a pretty cool kayak! Definitely curious to hear your thoughts on performance, setup/takedown time, and overall fish-ability.
I've been considering an inflatable for travel, and it's nice to see options/competition. 8
General Fishing Tips / Re: Alameda Rock Wall advice« on: April 12, 2024, 04:50:54 PM »
Sweet, good to go!
One or both of those days might work for me too - and I need to start getting some days on the bay. Need some fish tacos! Hopefully my nebulous schedule and the weather both cooperate! 9
General Fishing Tips / Re: Alameda Rock Wall advice« on: April 12, 2024, 04:22:53 PM »
Haha, also what Joe said! I don't really go out in more than 10 knot winds, and I will usually bail and head in if it starts picking up past that.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Alameda Rock Wall advice« on: April 12, 2024, 04:21:08 PM »
Hey, right on, and welcome to the kayak fishing madness!
Sounds like you are already pretty aware of the hazards at Alameda - the tides and winds can both get pretty crazy there. Generally, you want to target the same types of areas you normally target for halibut. You probably already know this, but there are several websites that let you view a bathymetric chart to help find structure/depth changes. There are lots of productive spots within a mile of the launch, and in pretty much every direction, so just look to target areas near structure and you should find fish if they are there. If I have a plan for Alameda, I tend to watch the weather reports for a couple days ahead of my trip, to make sure that I'm not gonna have any strong winds. I've seen the wind blowing both towards the ramp and away from the ramp - good to keep an eye on that. For tides, I usually plan to fish generally with the, on the incoming or outgoing, then head back to the ramp as the tide changes direction. In other words, work with the tides. Alameda can get 3-4 knot currents, then throw in a head wind and it can be a real slog getting back. At least if you head north/towards the city there is always the bailout inside the break wall. If you head south, not so much. I also recommend making sure you have proper safety gear: immersion protection, a VHF marine radio, PFD, etc. There are lota of threads here that discuss in great detail the best/worst/minimum safety gear - there is a sticky-ed thread that is a great read. The bay can be pretty unforgiving on a kayak, so it's best to be prepared. All that said, Alameda is an easy launch at the ramp, has great views of the city, and can be a very productive spot for halibut, stripers, and all kinds of other stuff. Post a hook up for the day you are planning to go - that is a busy spot and most likely at least one person on the forum will be out there too. Good luck and have fun! 11

CA Regulations / Re: Navionics: 20fm waypoints/line setup« on: April 08, 2024, 06:46:04 AM »Those aren't dd-mm-ss, they are dd-mm.mm Glad you got it sorted out. It's all about using the same units on both sides. 13
CA Regulations / Re: Navionics: 20fm waypoints/line setup« on: April 07, 2024, 08:19:08 PM »
Those aren't dd-mm-ss, they are dd-mm.mm It is measured in tenths of minutes, not in seconds, if that makes any sense. GPS is silly sometimes - many different users (ships, sailboats, airplanes, car navigation, etc) use different integers to depict the same position. Most common that I've seen are: dd.ddddd (Google maps and a lot of terrestrial users), dd-mm-ss (sail boats, some charts), dd-mm.mm (most commercial mariners, most navigation charts). There are also a few other systems with specific ideas that not many people use. Most modern devices let you choose which system you are most used to, between the three that I exampled anyway. 14
General Talk / Re: Stuff I learned registering my new kayak trailer at the DMV today« on: April 05, 2024, 10:20:53 PM »... if no plate or VIN might be easiest to tell them it was custom made. I don't know exactly. Probably not all that different than a lost title application, honestly. They will probably issue you some sort of VIN, for the documentation. With the lost title, they seemed pretty adamant that I get in contact with the previous owner. 15
