For Sale / T-Bone, hitch rack, $100 (sold)
« on: October 28, 2022, 04:46:58 PM »
I bought a used kayak and this rack came with it.  Doesn't look like it's been used (the fasteners are still in a plastic bag), but it has been on my garage floor for a year.

Anyone need this?

General Talk / Youtube vid: Fishing for bream (from Japan's NHK station)
« on: February 28, 2022, 08:12:51 AM »
NHK (Japan's PBS) makes very soothing youtube videos.  This one is about fishing for bream.  The master angler is using a reel-less rod that reminds me of an ice-fishing setup.

So many ways to fish...

I bought this from another NCKA-er a while back to mount to my wife's car, but never ended up using them.  It's time to put them back in circulation.  $100 to a good home.

I'm in Menlo Park but can meet at ARW, Oyster Point, or HMB.

« on: March 24, 2021, 09:00:24 AM »
Rear-loading rack looking for a home - $50.  This contraption has a roller on the back where you can rest an end of the yak.  Made loading easier.

I'm in Menlo Park, but fish ARW, Oyster Point, and HMB.

For Sale / SOLD - Canoe - Colman Outfitter 15
« on: October 05, 2020, 03:06:27 PM »
SOLD

My 17-yo neighbor gifted this canoe (including 2 paddles) to me when he moved.  My plan is to sell it and give the $$ to him.

Looks to be in good shape.  I'm in Menlo Park and don't mind driving it to HMB or out to the Oakland area.

Anyone use canoes?

General Talk / Accidents with hooks
« on: July 22, 2020, 10:16:19 PM »
Meat Eater just posted an article about accidents involving fish hooks.  I remember reading a similar thread on Bloody Decks.

These are tough pictures to see - the fisherman's version of Paranormal Activity or Blair Witch.

So, anyone have hook stories?

Besides jabbing myself with countless, seemingly-unavoidable sabiki hooks, the closest I've come is when my neighbor and older brother were play-fishing in the yard as kids and he swung a treble hook into my brother's lip.  Paramedics pushed it through and cut if off.  I've been lucky otherwise.

Fisherman tests new reel on girlfriend.

Couple of thoughts:
  • Videos like this is are the reason the internet exists.
  • No f'n way my wife lets me try this on her.
  • The dog has a harness...

This looks like a ton of fun for anyone who owns a private lake.

I can only imagine the spine damage you absorb gunning it...

General Talk / 70-year old man kayak across the Atlantic
« on: March 22, 2018, 05:55:03 PM »
https://nyti.ms/2FWJhva

Anyone see this article about the 70 year-old guy who kayaked solo across the Atlantic?  Long read, totally engrossing.  It took 143+ days in what looks like a very small boat with a spray skirt and a paddle.  And it was his third trip.

Really edge-of-life stuff happened, including one incident that spawned this description from the writer, "Doba returned to his cabin somewhat shocked to be alive."

General Talk / Kayak rack: Not just for kayaks
« on: July 12, 2017, 12:48:55 PM »
As part of our remodel, my wife and I needed four pieces of 16' mounding. She was going to have the supplier deliver it for a fee or the GC pick it up.

Turns out it fit great on my kayak rack. Used the same straps and tie downs.

Another point in favor of kayaking.

General Fishing Tips / Anyone seeing bait at Pillar Point?
« on: April 26, 2017, 03:58:21 PM »
Is there bait at HMB?  I've been talking to people about eating smaller fish (anchovies / sardines) and want to catch some if they're around.

Hello folks,

Quiet day of fishing.  Talked to Ty during launch and saw lots of NCKY'ers out there.  Caught a rock crab while bottom fishing.

Unfortunately, I left a Hobie paddle and two rods (Lamiglas 8' 6" w/Revo NaCL and 6' 6" Shimano with Penn Fierce 4000) leaning against the fence by the iron chain between the parking lot and beach.  That was at noon and they weren't there when I remembered and checked back at 2pm.

I'm hoping one of you fine, upstanding folks found them.

First time crabbing this past weekend.  Sat was flat and sunny.  A great day.  I only had 2 hours and caught 1 keeper, about 10 shorts.

Met DaGup/Bill.  I'm attaching a pic of him and his first-ever crab.

Sunday had bigger swells.  Still a beautiful, sunny day.  Caught 10+ shorts, no keepers.  Met Red Snapper/Vicky.  We were talking about crab bites and she mentioned that one had gotten her good earlier in the morning.  I was only half-paying attention until she showed it to me.  F*k.  Got a pic of that too.

About the crabs, there were lots of shorts to the left just outside the breakwater in the 30-40 ft area. I'm going to try again later in deeper water.

Good luck, everyone.

Bernard
