Hobie Kayaks / Re: Guide - Metal 180 MD Sprocket Installation
« on: March 24, 2024, 05:26:12 PM »
Great job summarizing this!  Looks sharp.

So the Hobie recommended fix for a broken sprocket is to replace the entire spine.  So, I ordered a new spine (MD 180 with Kick up fins) and the vendor sent a spine fully equipped with the idler roller and two new drums.  So, last night I put all of the remaining parts on the new spine and interestingly, the original chain cables were not long enough.  I swapped out the chains from another drive and same thing.  Then I got to measuring - why would they not fit?  Turns out, this new spine has about 1/4" more length from the base of the sprocket to the ridge the sprocket housing is attached to than on both of my older drives (one with KU fins, one MD 180 w/o).

Has anyone experienced this before?  I havent had the chance yet to look if Hobie makes longer chains, or if you can add a chain link or two to add room.  Also, I wonder if the knock-off chains on amazon are a bit longer?  I just need another half inch to an inch of length to make up for the longer trip around the sprocket.  Seems messed up.  I ordered the spine from Sunjammers in Florida.  Got here quick and the quality seemed perfect.

I literally scoured the internet last night looking for this video - I dont know it exists, but I feel it does... like bigfoot.

I have a new 180 w/ KU spine on the way, my 180 w/ KU spine with a single broken sprocket (nothing else wrong), and an old spare 180 drive that needs to be retired.  I am (kind of) contemplating replacing the broken spine with a single working sprocket off of the old 180 drive, so I have two (like new) mirage drives.  This involves me cutting, or removing the lines to one side, removing the broken sprocket, then re-running the lines on one side through the replacement sprocket.

May be more trouble than it is worth.

CA Regulations / Re: CDFW Inseason Groundfish Recommendation
« on: March 08, 2024, 11:25:02 AM »
Why the November <20 ftms?  What is so special about sharktober that they want to limit inshore fishing?  This doesnt seem to make much sense.

I'm not sure. Maybe allow RF and Dungeness combo. I've received many complaints from hardcore fishermen that November and December have much better fishable weather.

Paul

Good point, and those things are true, but there isnt really an ecological or biological reason to close october, open Nov, and close December to inshore fishing, so why regulate it unless it is for these less-important reasons?

Wasn't totally clear from the video, but how did they crack the kayak on both scuppers and snap their paddle?  Maybe it was the air time going over the crest... not too sure.  Cowabunga!

I paddled an OTP for a while and found that the shorter sized paddle would hit the gunwales on my stroke sometimes, so I upgraded to the 260 cm and that worked much better.  I am 6'2" as well.  Hope that helps.

We ran into a guy mooching for salmon at the cove one time on a jetski.  It looked like a pretty cool setup and very agile on the crowded fishing grounds that particular day.  Still happy to be talking tho. :smt006

I might need to focus more on work, since it definitely took a hit last year.
Just bought a midweek season pass so I will have to allot more days to skiing.
And I hope to get more days on the motorcycle and mountain bike in.

Priorities people!!!  I hope you get 60 days fishing Joe, and happy ny to you and Mabel!

I came here to learn about beaver observation.

I would have canceled my NCKA subscription if this (or similar) comment had not appeared. As it is, I'm a bit disappointed that it took more than 4 hours...
Happy to be of service!   :smt023

General Fishing Tips / Re: Advice for keeping dungeness fresh
« on: November 27, 2023, 12:42:26 PM »

Thanks for the update.  I didn’t get a chance to post and say that I do this all the time because by the time I get home, rinse off all my gear, and put it away, I’m usually too tired to cook crab.   The only difference is that I use a plug in fish tank bubbler so I don’t have to worry about batteries.

I have a power outlet in the back of my truck, so I use it on the drive home as well.   I transport my catch in a cooler full of sea water with the bubbler chugging away.  Been doing this for many years.  It may be overkill, but it keeps the dungies super lively.   Your experience with how lively and aggressive they are when you finally get around to picking them up is the same as mine.   I got pinched so many times that I eventually bought and use a pair of crab tongs that I got from Amazon.

That sounds like a great system for keeping them fresh. Do you cool the water at all? How well does it work when it is warm out?

Thanks for the crab tongs link!  I had the same question regarding temperature.  The cool late november days and evenings made storing this tank in the garage pretty much perfect.  I doubt the water fluctuated much between 50 and 60.
