Olympic fishing? Seems like a late April fools joke.

Thanks for that summary. Very interesting that the population is growing what seems rapidly to me for such a long-lived species despite far exceeding the estimated PBR. It seems that the estimated the PBR is too conservative and that they must not be using the real data on current mortality and population growth in their models. Disappointing.

Every party boat I've been on in the past has had a descender on board.  The mates will descend a fish for the angler.  The majority of them use the simple upside down milk crate with 10-15 lbs of lead on it.

I have only been on one party boat in the Bay Area and while it did have a descender (one attached to a fishing pole), it sat unused as the boat left a wake of floating canary and other rockfish. I hope your experience is more typical than mine.

Thanks for posting this Paul. The app is a great backup but I think I will still keep my paper copy to avoid having to hand my phone to the warden while bouncing in the ocean. Usually just waving it at them is good enough.

Actually, the table I just sent is almost the same as sandwg's fist table. I assume the difference is rockfish**

Interesting. I think the problem is indeed in the buttons. I initially selected Rockfish** assuming this was all rockfish. However, the asterisks are not wildcards as I thought they are footnotes denoting that this category is only rockfish that were not identified to species. When I select all rockfish species and rockfish** I get the attached table. It is indeed trending up, but not as dramatic as your first graph. Still interesting that there was a big jump in 2022, right before the quillback problem.

I had posted annual commercial takes for the US in another thread and it was very flat for the last 20 years.  But the NOAA also allows you to query their databases and you can pull up by state / species.  So I queried California, last 15 years, all species of rockfish.  The results were eye opening.   Commercial rockfish take is climbing very rapidly.  Columns are Pounds, Tons, $.

I'm getting different numbers when I run the query, using this page, https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/foss/f?p=215:200

Same here. Attached is the table that I see. Harvest was much higher until 2003 and then dropped dramatically and has stayed pretty steady since. Note that I did not include all years for clarity. This is a great site by the way. Thanks sandwg for posting it.

That thing is hilarious. I could see it in a Monty Python sketch.

Mine was over a year past warranty and I was the second owner. They still replaced it free of charge!! Awesome company.

Thanks for the update Paul. Is the meeting tomorrow something we should attend?

Those are some crazy dudes. It's amazing how well they handled that thing in the waves. Their paddling was in perfect sync going out. Great winter thread.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Kayak loading on tailgate spoiler
« on: February 04, 2024, 07:34:56 PM »
Thanks y’all. Good advice here as usual.
I will give the Codinter device a try since it’s the simplest option. My Odyssey doesn’t have rails or hatch, so first order of business would be to install the rails and crossbars.
I’ll report when I make progress
I've tried those, it doesnt stay on all time and will slip when you put weight on it.

I tried something similar and the kayak slipped off unless it was perfectly balanced and pushed. I set it right back.

I use a Rhino tack T loader and it makes loading on my CRV easy. I can even easily avoid my antenna on top.
