Not sure when you were last out at Timber Cove but I picked up your Hawg Trough this evening about dark. It was washed up on the rocks at the side of the beach launch there at TC when a friend and I stopped by to check out the water conditions. We'll have to figure out how to get it back to you.

General Talk / Took the Win Sunday on the California Delta

Sunday was the first open tournament for the Western Kayak Bass Series this year and the event was held on the California Delta out of Tower Park Marina just outside of the town of Lodi. I prefished Saturday for the even and found some good fish about three miles from the launch that were willing to hit frogs. Most of the area was dirty except for this one little bay that had clean water. I was able to see plenty of good fish in the 18-20" range cruising around hitting bluegill in the grass beds. The bite had been reported as really tough that week with all the wind and dirty water so I was pretty excited to find this area and an active bite.

Sunday morning 27 anglers launched from the marina and headed out into a stiff wind to try their luck. I headed straight for my spot with plans to sit on them all day. I knew my bite would be dependant on the low tide which wasn't going to be until mid day so I figured I would spend the morning hitting the edges of the bay trying to pick off a few fish while waiting on the tide to fall. I was disappointed after the three mile pedal to find that the overnight wind had muddied up the bay. Since the water was still high and I wasn't sure if the low tide bite was going to happen in the muddy water I went into the bay and started punching the edges of the tules where there were hyacinth mats mixed in. I started picking up fish right away in the 14-16" range which would at least get me on the board. I ended up catching about 25 fish or so with a couple coming on frogs along the edges including a 17.25" fish that would be my biggest of the day. At a total of 50" for my best three I wasn't sure if it was going to be enough to take the tournment but I was hopeful after checking the live leaderboard as I pedaled back to the launch.

As it turned out I was able to take the event. I ended up with first overall, first place big fish, and first place in both of the side pots. This earned me $880 in cash and some cool swag from some of the event sponsors.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / LED Lights for night fishing from the kayak

So I'm seeing more and more posts about lighting for night fishing. I installed SuperNovaFishingLights on one of my Hobie Pro Angler 14s last week. I finally got around to taking a pic of the finished product. I have two of their 20" blue LED strips on the outside of the bow to light banks. These lights also have UV properties that will react with any of the Hi vis UV lines. I have these lights rigged with a dimmer inline so that I can control their intensity. Full strength is great for fishing by myself but it's nice to be able to reduce their power when fishing with others so that I don't blind everyone. The dimmer has a very small IR remote control that's a little smaller than a credit card. It can control intensity and also has a "mode" feature if you want to have a disco party out on the water!! LOL

For the inside cockpit lighting I used two of the Super Nova 4" red LED strips attached under the side mounting boards. I cannot dim these but since I don't run them all the time it doesn't really matter, and when I do I want them bright so that I can tie knots, deal with fish, or whatever.

The Super Nova kits come with toggle switches. I didn't want toggle switches as I figured I would just snap them off so I purchased a pair of red and blue LED lighted flush mount anti-vandal switches. I mounted these in the side rail just below my depth finder and the rudder deployment handle. The system works great and the install turned out pretty sweet.

My only piece of advise for those interested in installing LED lighting is to make sure you understand the power draw. Most people are under the assumption that LED lights dont draw much power. That's true for single lights. However, when you get into LED strip lighting the power consumption can be pretty substantial depending on how many you install. Super Nova recommends an 18aH battery for thier kayak kits. This would need to be a separate battery from the one you use for your depth sounder if you plan on fishing for any substantial amount of time. Your depth finder has minimum voltage requirements that are well above that of the LED light strips. In order to power my Humminbird 859ci HD DI and my Super Nova LED lights for a full night of fishing (dusk till dawn) I am running two 22aH 12v SLA batteries. This is still overkill for what I need but I'd rather have too much power than not enough. For most trips I'll just run a single battery with everything hooked to it since the LED strips won't be used unless I'm night fishing.

Anybody got lights on their kayak? I'm looking at ordering their Deluxe Kayak Kit to put on my Pro Angler 14. This would include the strips for the bow and stern in blue/UV to help while night fishing. Last year I used a separate portable plug in style black light but it was a pain with the wires lying on the deck, no real sturdy way to mount it, and because it had to sit "on" the kayaks deck I had a bit of glare to deal with that made it less than stellar.

I like the idea of the SuperNova kit because the strips are mounted to the outside of the hull which should stop the glare issue and because they're LED they should have virtually no power draw so I can use my existing fish finder battery.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Lake Hennessey last Sunday afternoon

I took my boys out on Lake Hennessey last Sunday for a little bass fishing. We found a few up to around 3lbs and had a good time on the water.

While fishing back in a shallow flat with some matted vegetation mixed with tules I saw something that was a first for me. A fish swam out of the grass directly at me and I'll be darned if it wasn't a koi!! It was bright orange with a white tail and must have weighed 25lbs! This was no carp either!! It was definitely a koi! We ended up seeing two others that were grayish in color with a little white in each of them.

I'm wondering if these were former pets that were dumped or whether they were "stocked" in the lake? Anyone have any insight on this?

Well, today was Evans birthday! I picked up a new left over Pro Angler 14 from Sunrise Mountain Sports in Livermore on Saturday morning. As part of his birthday gifts he inherited my 2010 model Pro Angler 14 so that he doesn't have to double up with me anymore for fishing. I got my trailer converted to haul both boats in an exceptable manner for now. I also picked up a 9' Wave kayak from Costco for my 5 year old who has a birthday this coming week. Looking to get out on the water a couple times this week while the boys are on spring break!

Can't say enough about Philip and the crew at Sunrise Mountain Sports. They were an absolute pleasure to deal with and gave me a great deal on the PA14! Don't hesitate to stop in and give them some business of you need any kayaking, skiing, or mountaineering gear. The store was well equipped with a variety of outdoor sports equipment!!

Anyone seen any left over Pro Angler 14s for sale at the local shops? I'm ready to buy a new one and would love a 2015 but if I can score a great deal on a left over 2014 I would definitely jump on it!!

I'd prefer olive but would take a dune hull if that's all I can find. As long as it's not papaya I'll be happy!!

I have a brand new in the box never spooled or mounted Shimano Symetre 3000FJ. It comes with everything that it would straight from the store.

Also for sale is brand new never spooled or mounted Abu Garcia Silver Max baitcasting reel. It's got a 6.4:1 retrieve ratio and has the flipping switch to disengage the clutch only when the button is depressed. This mode can be turned on and off with a simple flip of the thumb. This reel was won in the last Delta Kayak Bass Series event and has never seen use of any kind.

I have a very lightly used Shimano Calcutta 300D spooled with fresh 20lb PLine PF. Very minimal scratches, less than normal use. This thing feels like butter and just returned from Shimano for a clean and lube. This is an awesome swimbait reel for bass fishing or for jigging lingcod and rockfish. Has only been used in fresh water.

General Talk / Any rod builders in Sonoma County

I've got a Kistler flipping stick that I absolutely love and have had for almost ten years now. The ceramic inset in the tip broke last year and I replaced the tip but it wasn't a perfect match. Then a guide mid ways up the blank had the ceramic pop loose. Not sure what happened to the ceramic piece (lost somewhere in the garage). I removed the eye and had planned to replace it but never got around to it. Now another insert has come loose. I guess it's just time to have it rewrapped.

Looking for a reputable rod builder that can remove the guides that are left and rewrap the entire blank with matching guides. Looking to have micro guides put on if possible.

I'd prefer someone that's not a crazy long distance away. I'm in Petaluma but info travel to Clear Lake and the Delta fairly regularly.

Looking for some recommendations.

Anyone here ever fished Fountaingrove Lake up in Santa Rosa? I have to run up to Harbor Freight this afternoon when I'm done at work and was considering taking the Pro Angler up there to check it out. From the images on Google Maps it looks like frogging and flipping will be the ticket and those happen to be my two favorite techniques!

It doesn't look like you have to pay to park and I can't find any info on paying to launch a boat. The only info I can find says that non-motorized vessels are allowed, and there is an old report from 2000 that says the bass bite was hot. Hopefully there are still a few fish in there!

Fishing Pics / The Real O.G. Delta Rat

Fished the Delta yesterday near Lodi and ran into this guy. He was a trip and let me get crazy close to him before he became uncomfortable and moved on.

Caught a few fish too. Managed to land seven even in all that ridiculus wind that we had. Only took pics of the first two fish to prove I got a little slime on the yak.
