General Talk / Re: Fish results spreadsheet for 2023 vs 2022
« on: January 03, 2024, 10:49:38 AM »
I use to track my trips using spreadsheet. Documenting date, tide info, launch time, fishing time, ending time, wind, swell, air pressure, catches, tackles used, etc. I did that from 2017 till 2021. I couldn't keep up with it during pandemic since I was fishing 3-4 times a week during Mar-Nov. I think it is a great way to track your progress. I fish a lot less now, probably did 80 trips last year, but I have 0 desire to go back tracking it.

Saltcitysailing from Utah. I have it since 2021, a few hundred trips and it is holding up well.
hum, that's a lot of trips!

averaged about 100-120 trips a year during pandemic years. Not so crazy this year, maybe half of that.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Tahiti - Bora Bora & Moorea fishing tips?
« on: March 13, 2023, 09:57:41 AM »
Bumping this thread. Im headed there later this year and was wondering if anyone knows about current fishing regulations/restrictions? Are there MPAs in Moorea that I need to be aware of? Has anyone been recently and have advice? Surprisingly hard to find info online

Oh boy! I am so excited for you! When are you going and where are you lodging? Send me a pm and we can chat about it. It has been so many years and I'm still missing it every day! If you headed to Bora Bora, I could link you up with this local fisherman to take you out for Marlin, YFT, Mahi, etc (December is the best). He was a fraction of the cost compares to booking via hotel.

As far as shore based fishing, I never really ventured out the hotel. If you stay in over water bungalow, respectfully ask if you could fish off your deck. Most hotel has a police of no fishing, but the staff told me as long as no other guests complaining, you are fine. Bring good amount of plugs and sabiki, etc. There are so much reef fish at Hilton Moorea.

I bet it performs just like a U-boat. Looks like they've knocked off more than just the TI. Knock off and improve is their motto. Any lurker thinking about buying one of these, please don't support these thieves. I am so sick of these ripoff retards.

Agree with this 100%.

Hobie has a great reputation. Durable products and excellent service & warranty. Stick with Hobie and you will be happier.

I find it interesting that nearly every year the groundfish regs change, but the halibut regs haven't changed in over 20 years. I'd like to see more effort by DFW to curb the downward trajectory of halibut numbers in places like Tomales Bay. Catching halibut there has become increasingly difficult in recent years. Perhaps it's time DFW take a closer look.

You should read some of the stock assessments for cali hali.  One thing that is very evident is the the population has very big up trends (strong recruitment years) every now and then, followed by long lulls.  It doesn’t seem to be correlated to overfishing necessarily.

-Allen

I have only been fishing for them in the SF bay for 5 years and I am definitely noticing the volume has been improving. (Or maybe I just got better :smt005)

I think in the broader macro view the halibut fishery is very healthy, but micro locations like Tomales get hit extremely hard, and most locals I've spoken with up there say the fishing has deteriorated in recent years.

I don't disagree with you! I haven't caught a legal halibut there! The only legal fish (yes, the only legal fish) I have taken from tomales bay was a wsb :smt005
