Date: Saturday February 23rd
Location: Stillwater Cove South, Pebble Beach
Time: Dive in AM, Award Ceremony at 2pm, Potluck/Chill until ?
Details:
-We know this date will not work for everybody, just a reality, but hopefully a lot of 2012 particpants can make it down. My schedule is very tight with family and Team in Training, and this is really the only weekend before March that I can do this. I will send all 2012 participants a PM shortly. Non-participants welcome also!! :smt004
-Parking at SWS is limited, but we still thought it would be the best location for this. There is extra parking up at the Spa, and it's really not that far of a walk down. PLEASE PARK IN DESIGNATED GUEST AREAS. If you are unfamiliar with the location, just ask where you are meant to park. You should only park in the lot by the pier/bathroom when unloading and loading.
-People can paddle out and dive in the AM, and then we will do Awards and potluck at the beach starting at 2pm. There's a -0.1 tide at 3:20pm that day so there should be plenty of beach available. :smt003
-The DOTY Champion plaque will be presented to fuzz. This is a beautiful plaque made by Piscean and is designed to be passed from winner to winner each year. We will burn the name and year of the winner on the back each year and then it can be passed on to the next champion.
-Prizes will include a bad ass custom speargun made my our very own Lucky13. Custom dive board and flag mounts by bloodbath's company Pacific Nalu. An excellent UK SL4 eLed L1 Dive light donated by Austin's Dive Center. Killer clothing and prints by the amazing Amadeo Bachar. Goodies TBD from the FreeDive Shop in Sacramento. Custom DOTY 2012 Calendars by the talented HojoMan.
-Hoping to get FryMaster1 to help us out with the fryer for the potluck. If not, I have one I can bring and a table as well. People can bring food and drinks, and fry whatever they catch right at the beach as well. :smt003

Sheepshead are there, but not a gimme....I saw three last year (2 males and one female) and managed to shoot the one female (the only one I got a shot off on).
I can tell/show you the areas where I have seen sheep, and the areas where I have seen the highest concentration of MFE.

Very cool of you, Rick, and Fuzz to put this on. I've got the calendar marked. I'd be happy to take out folks that are new to diving. I have some extra gear to bring, too. Maybe between a few of us we can even gear up a few people head-to-toe!

Got great news today!
I sent an email to my buddy Robert Okumoto who is a cancer fighter and didn't hear back for awhile and was getting worried... :smt009
But today he wrote back, and he and his brother Jim will be joining us on 2/23 at SWS.

Robert says that neither he nor Jim feel strong enough to dive, because of Robert's cancer and Jim's ailing back, but will hang out, fish off the pier and chill.
I told him they should bring their dive gear down just in case. :smt002
Robert and Jim are the guys I first went ab diving with, was diving with Jim when I shot my first monkey, and they have met several NCKA members over the past few years inclding bloodbath, Fishmaster1 and family, cnew83, porky, DaveW and Sledge.
Very glad they will be joining us to meet more NCKA guys.

Well...conditions are probably gonna be less than favorable:
Saturday: Variable winds 5 kt or less. A slight chance of showers. Mixed swell...WNW 9 ft and SW 1 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.
But, we will still be there and I have no doubt that anybody who shows up will still have fun. :smt003
Remember, if you can't make it you will have to live with whatever prize I pick out for you when your turn comes up in the prize raffle...so much better to be there if you can.

In case the hedgerow parking is full or closed on Saturday...here's a little map to help out with finding the additional free guest parking at the Spa and Tennis Courts....and a close up one of the Spa and Tennis Courts as well.
It's only a .26 mile walk from the spa parking back down to where the hedgerow parking is. It's paved, flat and easy. : )
You can see how big the lots are at Spa and tennis courts. : )
The spots next to the pier/stairs/bathrooms are for members of pebble beach, not for kayakers/divers/guests. Unload your gear there, move your car, and just walk on back. No biggie. : )

I think there will be divable territory in and around the cove, but you would still want a kayak to get to it. If you don't bring a yak your options will be a lot more limited.
There is kelp to clip off to, but sometimes an anchor does help in bigger swell...but a ton of guys just use kelp clips year round over there.

Conditions are meant to be a little worse on Saturday, but you can see how it is really not that rough outside of that big island? There is a ton of good structure over there that is almost always diveable. But you want a kayak to paddle out there.
