I got this blade as a Christmas gift last December and have been slowly determining how to finish it for an upcoming camping trip. I ended up going with a semi hidden tang using some tan oak scrap that was leftover from the bathroom renovation in January. The wood grew in our yard!
It turned a little rough but this is the prettiest it will ever be!

thanks guys!

What's next, "Forged in Fire"?

I wish!
I've always wanted a semi-outdoor forging setup, but for now I'll stick with the finishing stuff and just buy the blades. Maybe a nice fillet blade for the next one.

Off to get some leather for the scabbard! I had grand plans for a brass furniture on the sheath, but it'll depend on how much time I get get in on this.

two huge oak trees are coming down at my place in a week, so that will probably derail me from crafty stuff for a while. It'll be all wedges and chainsaws as I move into September. But I'll have about 4 cords of new knife handle material :smt044

Cool Sean.........got a before pic?

sort of! It came as a finished (though not very sharp) blade with the brass already on it. Here's the link:

I know for sure It is more than a $14 knife now!

Got a little time in on the scabbard.
Plan is to use matching brass rivets to reinforce the eventual stitching and hopefully add a brass chape (tip) and throat ala the Aragorn hunting knife from lord of the rings.
it is admittedly in a rough state now, but I thought a first stage pic might be cool. I picked up the leather for $4 at Leatherwise in SC, it is probably 8oz or so with a nice natural color to it.

the knife is meant to ride a bit higher on a belt, and be tight to the wearer without need of a leg tie down or anything. I added the retainer strap across the back of the blade as I had another knife that kept slicing the sheath strap when drawn, due the strap being on the edge side of the sheath. Method to my madness etc :smt005

If you're in the market for a sewing machine that will stitch 1/2 inch of leather with no problem...    PM me.    GF father passed away before ever getting a chance to use it.   Gobs of parts go with it... ( thread, bobbins,, etc. )

Thanks Jim! I do already have two old style Singers and have the oldest one set up for canvas and such.
I'm going to go with a hand sewn stitch for this piece, since I already have all of the tools for it.

the trick these days is finding someone qualified to repair sewing machines, since so few folks sew anything!

So I finally got another couple of hours in on the scabbard and got it finished.
I could not find my sewing gear (the shed has consumed it for now) so instead opted for glue and rivets. A lot of old timer knives had riveted sheaths so I figured I’d just roll with it. Plus if I do didn’t complete it today it wasn’t going to be done for the camping trips I have planned heading into fall.
In the end it turned out pretty good. I learned a lot from this project and it was certainly satisfying to envision it and make it happen. It was meant to be a little flashy, and I think I succeeded in that :smt003.

Beautiful very nice work I've been saving up pieces and parts just can never seem to find the time to do that including the dead Cherry saplings in the backyard. Also had couple of my deer hides tanned without the hair so I could use them for things like that
