Title: Decisions, decisions ...
Post by: polepole on January 04, 2005, 12:47:09 PM
What ever do I do this weekend?  The choices are:

1) Head back up to Tahoe ... it is E-P-I-C up there right now with the huge storm that came through.  I was there all last week and I have to say it's as good as it gets.
2) Go Dino hunting with you all.
3) Head up to the Russian and see what these rains have brought in.  Sean, do you know what shape the river is in?
4) Hit the SC perch tourney.

Allen -
1) Tahoe snow will be there for a while....there will be enough for you to make snow angels with  :smt059  + if you want snow - go to Mt. Everest - I hear it snows there year round  :smt002
3) Russian river can wait (besides, Uncle Sean from Ukiah will be Dino hunting with us anyway)
4) Perch are plentiful and easy to catch from many many locations... + you'll need about 50 of 'em to fill your stomach (over rice) :smt015

2) Dino hunting is SEASONAL + tides must be perfect + you got super star Line Backer Erik will be guiding us  :smt102 + it's not often you get to fish with a bunch of cool cats  :groupwave .........I mean, how often do you get the opportunity to catch a dino in perfect dino conditions - with an experienced guide - who does charge a single cent - (all he wants is a six pack of good beer  :party ) and more importantly, Dino meat (over rice) will feed Daly City for a week  :metal

what decision is there to make????  :smt064

Allen....HELLO!  :smt017

Definition of E-P-I-C = catching sturgeon from a kayak with your kayak fishing buddies..... :smt002

Ditto Joel (except the beer part... you can keep your beer or give it to Joel  :smt016 )... with all this rain, I'd be willing to bet the Russian is pretty muddy.

All right ... I hear ya!   I saw you boys are going Friday, but is anybody going sturg hunting on the weekend (sat or sun)?

I'm still tossed between snowboarding or sturgeoning (is that a word?).  I'll take Russing R and SC perch off the list.

Uh ... how windy is too windy for the bay?   The latest forecast calls for 15-20 kt winds on Sat and Sun.

Things are changing ...

I think I'll bow out of the wind fest on the bay this weekend, unless the forecast changes.   I don't feel like driving in the Sierras in this mess either, as I had enough of that last week.  The Russian will be blown out.  Perch anyone?  grrrrrr.....

the south winds will push us the exact opposite way the current will.  IMO, we break even.  I'm still game, even w/ the rain.

Right now... according to Iwindsurf.com, it's looking like Friday afternoon may blow a bit... it's calling for SW wind up to 15 knots... this might be too much wind to fish effectively.  We should have the option of tucking in off of China Camp or Mc Nears in a pinch if the wind truely does wind up coming out of the SW.

The forecast for Saturday afternoon is looking pretty good right now.... calling for single digit winds out of the SW.

You never know until you go... so things could certainly change between now and Friday.

FYI... it's more desirable to have the wind blowing WITH the current  rather than AGAINST the current.  When the wind blows strongly against the current, it kicks up whitecaps very easily.

While I usually like to go out a couple miles to the spots I like to fish out of China Camp / Buck's, there's certainly productive fishing areas closer to shore if the wind is coming off of the shore.

I'm not sure where you are getting your forecast, but the NOAA one I'm looking at doesn't show a decrease in winds Saturday.  Sat and Sun are forecasted to have S winds at 15-20 kts. It looks to me like the main storm comes through on Sat.  I think you guys might have a window on friday, but that window may close by Saturday.  Anyways, be safe out there.  Any shore based places to fish sturgies up there that we can build a big bonfire and keep an eye on you guys?  I really want to fish this weekend, I just don't want to anchor up in foul weather.

I get my forecasts from a subscription to...

http://www.iwindsurf.com

They adjust their forecasts for many of the localities throughout the bay rather than one broad forecast for the entire bay region.

I've found them to be every bit as accurate or more accurate than anything else out there, but as with all weather predictions, they change as the days draw closer.

The Russian is HIGH and a muddy mess.  The fish are really starting to move in though so as soon as it clears I am in!

I will try a little of everything.  Yaking to good spots and casting off of the shore, back trolling plugs, and boonedoggling bait.  When it comes to steelhead I'm not a purist, whatever works baby!

I have a really messy January schedule, so I'm going to tentatively mark the weekend of Feb 5-6 as a Russian River weekend.  Sean, I'm counting on you to get some scouting in before then and fill us all in on the secrets.   :smt004
