Slowly filling up. If you were on the original list and still want in, please chime in.

We are still waiting on exact pricing, but I expect it to be in the $650 range. TOTALLY worth it for three nights lodging and three excellent meals for two days (and snacks!). Add to that two full days of kayak fishing San Clemente Island with all the live bait you want!

What are you waiting for?!?!  :smt002

If you are on the 3.5 day trip and want to switch, it is your responsibility to find replacements for the 3.5 days trip.  Your deposit for that trip is only good for that trip.

Oops didn't mean to imply I was simply just switching. I should have worded that differently. If I find two people to buy our deposits then I'd like to hop on board this trip. If not then whatevs!  :smt003

I don't think you and Nick should have too much trouble unloading your spots on the other trip. Both trips are going to be insanely fun and I can't wait. June can not get here fast enough!!

What to expect. I'm sure I'm leaving out something...

Trip departs Sunday evening and returns Wednesday morning.

So we load up the boat around 5 or 6PM on Sunday and pick rooms, etc. Around 8:00 the boat leaves dock and picks up the live bait from the receivers in SD Bay. Then we slowly motor out to San Clemente Island overnight. We'll get to SCI at dawn on Monday. When you wake up you can chill and eat breakfast or immediately get in the water. It's totally up to you. We'll fish one area of the Island then come in for lunch. Depending on the bite/conditions/etc. we'll either stay put or move somewhere else on the island. Every stop is different terrain both above and below the water. After lunch we'll fish some more until dark and then come in for dinner. After dinner you can crash out, shower, or just chill on deck and fish and socialize. Also, if there are squid around we may try to catch some under the lights for bait. Depending on where we are, watching the sealions chase the flying fish is also a blast.

Usually a move is made over-night to a new location and the whole process is repeated on Tuesday. We'll get dumped off and the boat will usually take off a mile or two down current so all we have to do is drift to it. If at any time during the day you need more live bait, water, beer, etc, just call the big boat on your VHF and they'll send the skiff out with whatever you need. Two years ago the bite was so hot that a few people stayed OTW all day and had their lunch delivered to them. Also, if you're on the big boat I believe snacks are served throughout the day. The meals are legit and you will definitely not go hungry on this trip! You can fish off of the boat and if enough people are on-board at any given time the captain may run you out for a quick rockfish drift from the big boat.

There's two bathrooms, each with a shower. There's a free soda/water/ice machine, coffee, milk, etc. Beers are sold on the honor system.

That's it for now. Feel free to post up any questions.

Yeah, I guess I should have mentioned that. Wanna come hang with the A-Hulls on the other trip?

If anyone is thinking of switching from the 2.5 day trip to the 3.5 day trip it would definitely be best to do it before we start taking deposits for this trip.

Man, is it June yet??

I should also mention here that the Islander does not accept PAs or rigged up AIs due to space constraints.

Also, divers are more than welcome on these trips. Both tank and free-divers have gone in the past and had a "blast".

Slugs are gonna kill it!!! Thanks Mike!! Awesome tournament baits!!!

Yes, I imagine that the slugs fished weedless in the kelp will be money for the big calicoes.

There is also word that we will be some of the first to try out a new Branson Bait color scheme!

Hey guys/gals,

I've been talking with the owner of Bait Wraps - surface and bottom irons. If you haven't see this guys bottom and surface irons, they are wicked awesome and I hope to carry them for BransonBaits.com in the near future. Anyway he's donated a 5 pack of these beautiful 4.5oz bottom irons for me to raffle off on our trip. He's also also given us a discount price of $14, reg $20 if anyone wants to buy some, surface or bottom. I'll setup a link as soon as I can, way too busy pouring bait orders right now to breath.

More about these baits here... https://www.facebook.com/Bait-Wraps-119909741506208/

Images from left to right are.....

Sardine
White Mackerel
Green Mackerel
Green Scad
Deviled Egg

This is our new BransonBaits.com color which I'll be bringing - 8" swimbaits and 7.75" slugs. I'll have at least one or the other per person. I tested it last year and it caught some toads!

This trip is going to be killer! Get Some!

Don't have time to read old threads but my interest was peaked when you said divers have been on trip.  What exactly is everyone fishing for?  Chance for yellowtail, tuna or WSB?  If so I  will pay right now.

If the waters are warmer there, like last year, there is probably a greater possibility of yellowtail and tuna. Not sure how shallow tuna will go. White sea bass is always a possibility. Also not sure if there are other divers signed up here. I believe there is one, maybe two, on the longer trip.

Thanks.  It would be helpful to have other divers out there.  I was down south a couple months ago and saw 100's of yellowtail but the weather turned and we had to cancel the trip.  It's been haunting me ever since.  Need to make it back down south for a do over.

Hojo is right. Main targets are halibut, calico bass, sheepshead, and whitefish....but there is always a chance at WSB and yellowtail. Last year there were a ton of bonito and quite a few of the smaller yellowtail around.

And the viz can be "ok" too.

Two years ago Kiel and I were sight fishing for sheepshead that were on the bottom..........in 42 feet of water.

That's awesome.  Unless another serious diver who plans on being in the water a lot steps up I will have to pass for now.  Better to have someone who will keep an eye out on each other.  Still interested in shooting some halibut and looking into a sweet underwater camera set up so will keep an eye on this thread as a possibility.

Thanks for the info

OK, being as I'm new to this mother ship thing (bucket list item for me), i have a couple questions??

- I use CPAP machine when sleeping, otherwise I snore and it sounds like a landslide. What is the order of bunk selection on board the Islander? I need to be near enough to a 110V outlet to use the CPAP.

- What is the launch order? I assume the crew has this down, but i'm curious as to how 22 kayaks get into an out of the water from the Mothership? How much gear goes with the launch or is it all added after the yaks are in the water?

- I assume(?) the evening meal is a given, but during the day is the galley a no-host situation?

I have gained much info from perusing the previous Islander topics, but any updates on this 2.5 day trip would be appreciated. i learn a lot from the questions of others. BTW, I have a fishing partner (Phil Lopez/Lopezcador) on the paid list.

- I use CPAP machine when sleeping, otherwise I snore and it sounds like a landslide. What is the order of bunk selection on board the Islander?

We can make bunk arrangements in this thread or decide when we board the boat. It's up to you guys. I'll post up the stateroom diagram this morning.

I need to be near enough to a 110V outlet to use the CPAP.

Each stateroom has a power outlet. Bring a power strip with a long cord so you and your bunkmate can each charge batteries and use your CPAP. In your case each of you may want to bring your own power strip.

- What is the launch order? I assume the crew has this down, but i'm curious as to how 22 kayaks get into an out of the water from the Mothership?

When we get to San Clemente Island in the morning the crew will start pulling the kayaks down off of the racks and lining them up along the deck of the boat. While on deck you can load up your battery(s), FF, etc. Try not to take too long.

How much gear goes with the launch or is it all added after the yaks are in the water?

When you are ready to launch you will gather your rods, gaff/net, paddle, etc and stage them near the launch steps. The crew will lower your kayak over the side and you simply climb down the steps and sit on your kayak. Members of the crew will steady each end of your boat while another member of the crew hands you down your rods, paddle, gaff/net, etc. They will then hand you your bait and send you off. If you have a live bait well you will take a lap around the boat to fill it and then paddle back and the crew will give you a scoop of live bait.

When coming back on to the big boat for a meal, a rest, or whatever, you repeat the process in reverse. The crew will steady your kayak as you hand them up your rods and paddle, then they'll help you up the swim-steps. Your seat, FF, bait tank, etc., can stay on your kayak. If we will not be making a move (and if it's calm enough) the kayaks will be tied off to the big boat and left in the water.

- I assume(?) the evening meal is a given, but during the day is the galley a no-host situation?

EVERY meal is a given. You will not go hungry. Breakfast and lunch are cooked meals, not bagels and cold sandwiches. I think there's also snacks served once or twice a day, but I've never been on the big boat long enough during the day to witness this.  :smt003

Yes, bunks. No, Stateroom D does not have a sink. It has two bunks, I think. Here's what most of the rooms look like.

I was looking at the pic that Fish Master1 (Andy?) sent and I noticed that none of the yaks pictured have a crate? I use a crate on my Cobra Fn'D which has my net and gaff holder attached, also extra pole holders. Are yak crates too cumbersome for when the yaks are on the rack on board the mothership, or are they OK?

booked Saturday night at the Dolphin.  Probably leave early and  cruz down the 101 and camp on the beach somewhere, I wanna test out my new roof top tent.  Never been to Refugio, anybody know if there's a dedicated number of drive in sites (campsites already booked that Friday)?  Uncle Lapu Lapu told me that he camped in Ventura in his RV last summer.  Any other suggestions (backroads, forest service roads near the coast to pop the tent) to break up the drive?  Haven't driven down south in forever.

Not sure if Ben and I are heading down the day before, but if we do we'll also be staying at the Dolphin.

Not sure about camping, but I would definitely not recommend Campland on the Bay in S.D.

Some tips after this last trip.

- Bring your own frozen squid and a way to keep it cold. The Islander did not have frozen squid this year.
- If you're a cereal eater bring your own cereal and milk. In the past they've had both. They didn't have either this year.
- Label your dry suit or dry pants.
- Bait tanks rock!
- Polepole's suggestion of bringing a tube of Neosporin was money. It actually helps a lot with the pain/swelling I get in my fingertips.

Mo' later.

Some more Q&A.

The address of the dock?
- 2838 Garrison St, San Diego, CA 92106
What time we need to be there to load?
- Between 5 and 6PM.
What we need to bring regards to license(s), cash for pots, cooler(s) and sizes, etc.?
License w/Ocean Enhancement Stamp (DFG was at the Island last weekend), jackpot entry was $20 a day. You can bring a small cooler on board, but keep it in your room. Bring a big cooler to leave in your car to take your fish home. You'll also need cash for your galley tab, fish cleaning or filleting if you choose, and tip for the crew.
What time we get back to the dock?
We'll be back at the dock at 6:30AM Wednesday morning.
Anything we need to know.
90+% of the YTs caught on the 3.5 day trip were caught on fly-lined sardines.

Just wanted to say that using totes seems like a good way to go to store your stuff on deck.  You probably saw the pics of the other trip on the Islander if your going on this trip. We had stuff piled all over the place  :smt044  And don't forget to put your name on everything, or mark your stuff so it's distinguishable!  :smt002

I think on this last trip, we had the most stuff, and was the most disorganized that I have seen so far, and far more "lost stuff" as a result.  Try to get all your stuff in one tote, and stack loose stuff (or tackle boxes or bait tanks) on top top of your tote instead of throwing it all around.  Stuff you don't need to get to regularly (extra batteries, or that 2nd backup tackle box that you just won't use), store down below in your cabin.

If you're still stocking up for this trip, 1/0 live bait hooks seemed to be the perfect size this year. A pack or two of size 1, 1/0, and 2/0 would get you through this trip.

I also learned not to put too much flouro on little spinning reels. I was using a pretty stiff flouro (Seaguar yellow label) and every time I'd release the bail to let my sardine swim away all of it would just pour off of my reel.
Title: Re: Islander 2.5 Day Trip
Post by: Bushy on June 15, 2016, 07:39:26 PM
I would also recomend some smaller bronze or steel bait hooks, which work great for the sheepshead and calico.  Like # 2 even #4.  And egg weights from 1/4 oz to 2oz even 3 for fishng the botom.

irons really werern't doing it, but for calico's swimbait alsways will.  Light heads- 2 oz.

God, I hope the YT are still there and getting bigger.  I am having serial dreams about that sound.  You know what I'm talking about.zzz......zzzzz....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!

I talked to Julia a few days ago.  their last trip, last week, had to be cancelled.  Wind and big south swell.  Conditions are holding for us though.......

On a different note, I may have to fly down and back to make the trip work best for family.  Anyone sorta close by (Salinas, Watsonville, even San Jose?) that would be willing to huck my stuff (rods, one tub 'O Stuff, Boat) for me? I would contribute to your gas money and could deliver the stuff on Thursday or Friday, Pick up 1st day after return?

Or, if coming through Santa Cruz maybe arrange a pickup.

A lot to ask I know, but schedules are tightening at Casa Bushy and I'm low on WAF.

Would somebody fill me in on the parking situation in San Diego, for the 3 days we will be off shore?

I might be able to help you out if I can figure out my vehicle situation/configuration.  I've got a newer truck now with a roof top tent thingy, I'll probably have to remove it for 2 boats (not super fun).  Y'all think it's be safe to leave the newer truck parked with the tent on it?  Got an older truck too, older truck might not be as comfortable on the drive down.  I wanted to leave Friday sometime before noon possibly and drive 1/2 way down or so.  Located in Royal Oaks/Prunetucky area.  Shoot, also forgot to add I might chill in SD area overnight the day we get off the boat.

OK thanks, Lopezcador and I will be traveling in one truck with 2 yaks so, $4/day to share is not too steep for overnight parking, if it's right next to the Landing.

Hey Bushy,
Me and the family are driving down on Sat. We're only bringing my kayak, the girls will be hanging out on the beach in La Jolla while we're on the boat, so we have room on the rack and plenty of room in the truck. We'll be staying in SD until the next Saturday possibly stopping on the central coast for a night on the way home so we couldn't get your stuff back until Sunday afternoon/evening. Could possibly meet up on Thursday, would give me an excuse to drive to SC while theres a solid S swell. :smt002

Does anyone towards the middle or front of the boat want to switch rooms with Abdiver and I? The first night I went on the islander two years ago, I never made it to the room because I was seasick. I was fine the rest of the trip. I hear the back of the boat may not be the best for someone who gets sick.

If not its all good.

I was having trouble keeping a live sardine on the bottom while slow trolling and I was using 8oz. I'm gonna bring a 12oz this time. What sucked was the drift was so slow that the 8oz kept me from drifting when I didn't paddle and when I did paddle any faster than 1 mph I had to let out a lot of line to hold bottom. I eventually gave up on halibut hunting and focused on live lining for YTs.

If you just want to drop some squid down to the bottom, 2 or 3oz should be fine.

There were some decent sized Mackerel Scad caught on the last trip.  Catch some of those and try your culinary expertise on them!

Honestly, it's my parents 50th wedding anniversary.  Cheers to them!  I have a hard enough time with 50 days with a woman let alone 50 years.

BWE reports from their 2.5 day trip earlier this week.

"Lot's of smaller grade yellows and some up to about 30 pounds. Handful of halibut, lots of bass, whitefish, rockfish stuff like that. Fun trip! Good weather! Good people. The crew worked their asses off for this trip."

"Tony summed it up well. The crew was awesome. The food incredible, the wind was the only issue. Caught a bunch of calico's, small grade yellows and lost a couple of large yellows. One right at the yak when the 30lb yellow I was ready to gaff pulled the 40lb fluorocarbon leader right onto the mirage drive fins and broke off the leader. The second when I was fighting it in 100' of water and gaining line the frickin Ultra fishing boat pulls up 35 yards behind me and drops his anchor. That Asshole, the noise made my fish sound straight down and pulling hard on my tightly adjusted drag when at the bottom he wrapped me up in some rocks and I could never get it loose, finally had to break the 65lb braid. The trip was awesome and I can't wait for the next one. What a way to break in my Hobie Revolution 13. Thanks OEX and Islander."

For the live bait are you tying the leader to braid or using a swivel? How long of a leader are you using?

ITS getting close!!! Cant wait to make the drive down!!!  What beers do they keep stocked?????  =)

They had a IPA from Ballast Point Brewery, a local company.  I enjoyed a few of those @$5 each.

On our trip they had: Coors Light, Bud Light, Budweiser, MGD, Pacifico, and Coronado Brewing co Islander IPA. Domestics were $3 and imports were $5. I also brought a small soft-side cooler that I kept in my room with a 12-pack...to take on my kayak while fishing.

Braid to 25lb or 30lb flouro to 1/0 live bait hook. No hardware. Use uni to uni or similar knot to connect braid to flouro. Not sure leader length matters. I had hella long leaders because I just wound a bunch of flouro on each of my reels. I'd imagine 3' would be fine.

I lip-gripped my biggest, but it was only ~14lbs. All the rest I just grabbed the leader and pulled 'em in.

I also brought a pair of the "Albion Gloves" with me and kept the right one handy, so if I got a big YT I was gonna slip that glove on real quick and tail it.

Monday - Variable winds 5 kt or less. Patchy fog before 11am. WNW swell 1 ft. Wind waves 1 ft or less.

My last minute suggestion is to only bring a handful of irons, swimbaits, and other lures. Because you're going to be fishing live bait most of the time, so get quality terminal tackle...hooks & swivels. You can fit everything you'll need in a small/regular plano box. Also bring lots of sunblock--and use it! And don't forget a towel for the shower too.

GuitarBen Cruizin'. First stop and first pic was Pyramid Cove, then we made a move to the South East side of the island. It was dope there. I had never fished that particular stretch of the island and it is by far my favorite. On past trips we usually fished a bit more North of where we fished Monday afternoon and all of Tuesday.

I picked up 4 YT on Day 1. All of them after lunch. Here are number 2 and number 3. The young deckhand who was running the skiff somehow managed to lose these two by not having his staple gun with him to label them right away. Andrew ended up hooking me up with the two he thought were mine, but mine were bigger.  :smt002
Title: Re: Islander 2.5 Day Trip

No biggie on the lost YTs, as there would be more to come.

I caught my first three YT on my little Penn Liveliner 4500/Shimano Trevala combo. By this time my leader was getting all tangled up and it was bugging the shit out of me, so I switched over to my heavier conventional set-up which was a medium heavy Trevala with a Revo Toro 60 loaded with 50lb braid and 30lb flouro. It turns out fate was on my side and this was a critical decision, as....

While dropping off the two previously mentioned fish to the deckhand I told him to hook me up with the big ass mackerel he had in the bait cooler. Not long after I get a heavy fish that just wants to slowly go back down to the bottom. It starts pulling me all over the place, but pretty slowly. It didn't make any screaming runs, but slowly dragged me around for 10-15 minutes. I got to my leader six or seven times but each time it would slowly swim back down a few dozen yards. I was pretty sure it was a BSB. After awhile it stopped being fun and my arms were getting sore. I was wondering what the hell this thing was so I started putting some serious pressure on it. I was mentioning that I was gonna be pissed if it was a batray (I was almost positive it wasn't) when I get to color. At first I thought it was a WSB, but then when it came circling from under my boat I saw it was a gangster YT.

29lbs on the boga, my PB, and Day One's jackpot winner.

In the late afternoon there were literally thousands of bonito swimming amongst us. I tied on a BH and tried to get one to bite. I tried all kinds of different retrieves, but all I could do was get them to follow it to the boat and not commit.

On one cast I just ripped the BH across the surface as fast as I could. I saw a boil just behind it, paused for just a split second, then started rippin' it again. A few cranks later it was fish on...only after a spirited battle on my Teramar/Cabo PT50 spinning combo up popped a nice little YT!!

For next year, we will set it up again in January so as to capture the good dates.  It might be one trip, it might be two.  But we will definitely do it.  For any that are intrigued and have not gone as yet, start saving your pennies and dollar bills now.  It really is an unbelievably affordable adventure.  Put away $20 bucks a week starting now, and you're on the boat next June.

Muy Bonito in action.

Hahaha... oh my what a fun trip! What a fun bunch of guys! Crew and food... was bomb!

Those damn bonito. I stopped counting after 12.... but I tell you what those suckers can run!
I managed a bunch of quality Calico up to 5# both days. A few good ones came on an S-waver, deep diving plugs and weedless swim baits in the shallows along the cliffs and kelp. Basically bass fishing, it was a blast. As for yellows, I only managed 1 the first day. For me it was a learning day for sure, right drag setting, hook and technique. The 2nd day I scored 3 and missed a bunch including a toad who dragged my ass from 120' all the way to 40' FOW only to get down into the rocks and busted me off. Man, that was fun.

I had one bad plunder. I was dragging a plug on my way in for lunch and stopped to give Mark the rest of my bait. I set my brand new Daiwa Tatula into the rod holder and grabbed the bait for Mark. I hear a quick zzzz zzzz and turned around just to see a small splash and the rod was gone, violently ripped right out of my Scotty holder. F%^k!!!!!!!  :smt076 Oh well, lesson learned, rod leashes from now on. I had a good cry and went back to fishing :smt022

All in all it was such a great trip with lots of great memories made. Looking forward to getting back on some yellow tail next year... maybe Meheeeko! Thanks Dustin.

Texas thanks for driving, you rock bro! As you can see he stayed well hydrated on the trip!  :smt044 :smt044

da sh*t!!!  Didn't catch a lotta fish...but learned a bunch.  Hella rad times meetin and chillin w/everyone.  One more day on the boat would've been sick too.  San Clemente island's pretty crazy...felt some sonic action in the water after an explosion the 1st day.  2nd mornin I started buzzin pretty early, looking up the cliffs above the cove we were fishin 2 bald eagles just chillin!  Too bad you missed this one uncle!  Next year school doesn't get out till the 9th of June.  Hopefully I can get in the schedule window....don't think I can turn in grades from the boat!

To everyone who organized this trip and to everyone who went on this trip, THANK YOU!  I'm still riding the stoke.  I don't even remember the drive home.  I just zoned out, relived the memories, and made mental checklists for next year's trip!

Day1 was 11hours OTW, Day2 was 12hours OTW, and I was left craving more.  Simply EPIC!

Attached are some random pics from the trip... should've taken more but I was too busy experiencing it.  :smt003

How deep were you guys fishing. Seemed like all the YT were caught a stone's throw away from shore.

On the East side of the island the depth drops off super fast. We were fishing anywhere from 10' - 200'. With the exception of the one YT I caught on the BH, mine were caught fly-lining sardines, and the big one took a mackerel.

What's funny is that I wasn't even trying to be funny. Literally - that's all you do.

Get a decent rod with a decent reel, put some 30lb mono or braid on the reel, somehow attach a leader of 25lb or 30lb flouro to your mainline, tie on a hook (I like 2/0 Mutu Lite Circle hooks after this trip), put a live bait on the hook, let the live bait swim ~100' away, put your reel into freespool "clicker" mode or set baitrunner feature, and wait for something to take your bait.

YT fishing 101

Bonita were some kind of fun... alas, no yellowtail for me but I had a few scream off with my bait. I caught 3 new species, Calico bass, pacific barracuda and bonita. I kept 4 bonita and a huge calico, had them fillet it, but when I opened the bag, there was only two fillets on bonita and a tine calico.... the only bummer of the trip but I def aint tripping cause my cat-daddt Dustin gave me two friggin yellowtail...... my bro...

Just got in last night from our extended stay in SD. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the great times and the makings of a true dream trip. I feel privileged to have been able to hang out, fish and make lasting memories with you all.

After loosing my only hookup in two days and 20+ miles of trolling for YT on a trip three years ago to La Jolla, i have been haunted by the memory of that lost fish ever since. Even if I didn't catch a YT on this trip it would have been my favorite fishing trip ever, but to scratch that three year itch made it all the more epic.

Good times everyone! Thanks to Dustin and Bushy for putting this together, and thanks everyone for making it enjoyable, and memorable! The highlights of the trip were seeing the look on my nephew Dylan's face after landing his first yellowtail tuna on the kayak, and landing a bonito and halibut double at the end of day 2.

I made a fun little video from our short dive on the 2nd day! We pretty much had rock bottom and 30 + foot vis at every spot up until we moved here so we didn't dive the best spot but we found a few rock piles in the shallows and tried to find rocks out deeper but it was all sand! Had a lot of fun diving with Nick and Dennis!
