Title: Fish n' Cleanup October 25, 2014 *Roll Call Page 1*
Post by: Archie Marx on September 30, 2014, 06:39:24 PM
It's about time for our second annual Fish 'n' Cleanup, but this year it is all about the Delta!

Date:
10/25/2014 (Saturday)

Fees & Registration: None

Times:

Many will launch at sunrise and fish in the early AM (high tide and outgoing).  The launch is muddy and isn't particularly easy. Drysuits or something to keep your legs dry during launch is advised.

Cleanup starts at 10ish or earlier if anyone feels like being an extra good steward.

Potluck starts around 1:00, and awards will be given during the potluck.

Location:
Shag Slough at the Liberty Island Rd accesses. This is a pretty central location and is both an hour away from Vallejo and Sacramento. For directions see link at the bottom of the page.

What to bring specifically for the event:  Trash bags, gloves & hand sanitizer and drinking water.  If you have a 5gal container of water please bring it to refill our hand washing station (there is no running water at this location).

Prizes: Headwaters has prizes for trash pickup (will be a surprise)!

Traildad has generously offered to bring a portapotty for the event.

Potluck:
Tim/Daleshark has volunteered to be the grillmaster for the day.
If you would like to let us know what you plan to bring please post up on this thread.

We are looking for people who can haul trash out from the event and to our dump location near Davis.

Fishing:
Available species are striper, sturgeon, crappie and black bass.
If you plan to target sturgeon please make sure you know the regs.
Don't hesitate to ask any specific fishing questions on this thread, or send racinrob a PM  :smt044

I have decided to host the annual Headwaters/SacCrew Fish N' Cleanup at Liberty Island this year.  The tentative date is October 25th. Available fishing: Sturgeon, Striper, Catfish, Crappie, and black bass. High tide is in the early AM, so we can fish the outgoing and clean up in the late morning/afternoon.

I would like to get some feedback:

Is October 25th a major conflict?
Who is interested in attending the Fish N Cleanup?
Who is interested in helping out (potluck, garbage hauler etc.)?
Does anyone want a sturgeon or striper fishing clinic at the day of the event or earlier?
Do we want t-shirts like last year?
Do we want prizes for trash pickup?

Thanks!

That place could really use it. Why is it so many fisherman think it's Ok to toss their trash where they fish?  :smt013
Do you plan to launch next to the bridge? If there is any significant rain, the levee turns into a slippery muddy mess. I made the mistake of fishing in the rain there and almost didn't make it back out. I feel that it is my back yard and I'd like to help.

Alright, this thing looks like a go.
The land trustee has given us the green light, and Dan at Headwaters is going to hook us up with some cleanup prizes. Thanks Dan!

I'll see what I can do about getting a new kick-ass tshirt this year.

If anyone else wants to get their sponsor involved, then don't let me stop you.  I'll turn this in to an official thread... in 3,2,1.

I'll be there. When we went 2 weekends ago, it REALLY NEEDED IT. Bring gloves... Can we get a Port-o-pot... 20 miles to the toilet isn't gonna work out to well :smt009 A lot of the trash is Toilet paper (or what ever was available) :smt012 so if you don't want the girls and everyone else squatting on the levy :smt003 we're gonna need something...

Adam is a anchor trolley necessary to fish this spot? If so I better get on it. What tackle will I need? Rattle-Traps, Hair raisers, Super Spooks, plastic worms, white grubs, and sturgeon rigs? Shoot me a PM?

Post by: RacinRob on October 12, 2014, 11:29:42 AM
If you fish for sturgeon I would use a trolley. Not a lot of current, but when the tide gets moving you want your anchor behind you. If the wind is blowing like today you really need one. I usually first with swim baits there on my way to sturgeon fish. Usual Striper gear is fine though. R traps, cranks etc.

I use a quick release anchor at this spot. As for tackle... what rob said. When I sturgeon fish I use 4-6oz pyramid weights, steel leader and a barbless octopus hook. I use elastic thread to secure my bait to the hook.

I usually troll swimbaits or yozuri striper plugs, and cast rattletraps at attraction flow areas for striper.  I haven't bass fished at this spot, but it looks prime. I have caught striper and crappie at shag slough on beetle spins and small white grubs on a jighead.

I might take highway 113 instead of Pedrick rd. I think it is a better road.

Some mapping programs show the address at the top of the directions in a different spot. Don't try so use the address to get there.

This one should allow you to zoom in if you want to see street names. It shows the route from Highway 113 at Binghampton rd. This part is the same no matter where you start from. The end point is the star which is at the bridge over Shag Slough. Parking is allowed on the water side (east side) of the road, but not on the bridge.

Kid friendly for picking up around the launch?  Any kid friendly fishing spots (can be shore based), like catching bluegill?

There are ample bank fishing spots near the launch.  I have seen bankies take lots of sturgeon, striper and catfish within 100 yards of the launch.

I do recommend that any kids be supervised 100% of the time. The banks can be hard to climb up from should a kid fall in.

Rain or shine I will be there at sunrise.

I just got an e-mail and permission letter for the event, and CDFW is letting us use their dumpster at the Yolo wildlife office to unload the trash we collect.  I'll have printed directions for those who will be hauling trash out.

I was going to fish for sturgeon, but since I just got home from a long week in the field I think I will throw plugs for striper unless I somehow I can find the energy to pack my sturgeon gear.

It looks like our group is on the smaller side, but I still think we can make liberty island a much cleaner place, and perhaps convince other anglers to be better stewards.

See you all tomorrow!

It was a great time meeting people and fishing with you guys. Hope to do more fishing in the future.

Happy Birthday, Trildad  I seen a few fish jump believe they were strippers. The place looked a lot better after we got most of the trash picked up. I hate people that mess a place up. If you being it then take back home. It was a good day for me, but a little windy. Nice meeting more NCKAer's.

Nice day for what it was. A little bit of rain, sunshine, and of course wind but the crew that was there did an awesome job of making it a cleaner place for sure.  :headbang:
Adam making his clean up rounds and getting some bank fisherman to help in the clean up ops. That was cool of them to help out when others gave him the  f#@$ off look.  :smt005
Here is what my kids and I collected for the short time we were there.

There are some kids in the Sacramento area who observed the men, women, and kids of NCKA doing the normal and nessisary work of taking care of our planet. The sport we love can generate some trash and mindfullness is relative, at the very least there are a couple of old geezers who will see Adams face when the let their broken polystyrene cooler blow into the slough. Too bad the pot luck was cancelled by winds ,but fortunately the food we enjoyed at Davis Noodle City was excellent.

The weather forecast turned nasty on us, and a handful of tough anglers showed up to brave the weather, catch some fish, and pick up a site that sorely needed a scouring. We owe a big thanks to Amos for bringing his crew, contractor bags, gloves and grabbers; Traildad and Son for bringing the Porta Potty, and Tim for bringing his crew and the BBQ supplies, and Insearchofish hauling the trash to the drop site.  We made a call in the morning to scrap the BBQ plans because of the high winds and the tornado warning that Insearchofish informed us of.

Headwaters awarded the cleanup prize to Tim (TW) and his girls. Even though a handfull showed for the event we were able to co-opt some bank anglers and collect enough trash to fill the dumpster provided by CDFW (DFG). The ecological reserve manager for Liberty Island also wished to extend his thanks to our group for our efforts, and provided us with a permission letter without expiration should we ever wish to have a similar event there in the future.

Thanks to all who showed to participate.  You guys and gals not only helped clean up a place that sorely needed it, but you also represented the responsible anglers here in NCKA, and inspired some bank anglers to join in on the cleanup effort.  Well done!

The funny thing is that I went there to catch a sturgeon, but I couldn't bring myself to soak bait when there was so much activity at the surface.
