Fresh water bass fishing.  From a kayak mostly.

I’m a bait caster guy. When I took up surf fishing I bought a Penn Fuego 3000.  It’s fine.  I just hurl baits into the waves.   It hauls in fish fine.

For small bass from the non boating ‘lakes, I got a Penn Fierce in the 1000 size.  Again. I just grabbed it and caught fish. I have a tiny Phlueger I backpack with for mountain trout in the Sierras.

That’s the extent of my spinning world. I kinda let the store owner pick my reels

Now?  I’m bass fishing a lot. I got my baitcasters figured out.   I’m kinda lost on a nice spinning reel.  Some friends tell me a spinner doesn’t need to be nice.  Some say buy something nice.  I almost dropped $$ on a Stradic 2500.  But I balked at the price.

How is that Daiwa Procyon AL?  Save a few bucks over the Stradic.

i mostly catch surf-perch up until now.  i will catch what i can eat,  and simply pack up on leave no matter how they are biting.  i get them on ice and go home.  FAST.

i never bled them.  i may make that a common practice from now on.

the rest of my catches are released.  (freshwater)

how do you bleed your fish?

General Talk / FedEx is breaking my heart.
« on: October 08, 2020, 08:57:57 AM »
i bought a couple of new fishing rods.  weeks ago.  they shipped reasonably on time, albiet on the slow side.  but MAN-o-MAN!  FedEx flat out blows!!  they were on a truck "out for delivery" last thursday.  the never tried to deliver, but kept moving the date back.   then no more notifications.  i called and they suggest i have them pull it off the truck and then pick it up at a FedEx store locations....err..okay.

whammo!  what box?  it went into limbo.  i whipped up a s-storm yesterday, and i think i am getting some movement. they told me, "our system shows it is in some storage box somewhere waiting to get back onto a truck to send to that store location".  wow..it was the longest sentence that provided zero info.  hahhahah..

my fish finder battery was lost for two weeks after they kept trying to deliver it to my office at 8:00pm or something.

i hate how many vendors use FedEx.  soul crushing.  :)

thanks for the vent.

General Fishing Tips / your T-Bone (or any brand) bed extenders?
« on: September 29, 2020, 11:24:03 AM »
i just got my T_bone bed-extender in the mail.  what a cumbersome behemoth!!  at least its lightweight!

got me thinking.  you roll up to your kayak spot, unload..you toss that thing into the truck?  thankfully i can shoehorn it under my camper-shell.  seems like an easily stolen item?  even a hitch lock is low hanging fruit for a sawzall.

in general, i like it.  i will tie my red-flag on it instead of the nose of my kayak.  i keep forgetting to do so.  i'm destined for a violation ticket.

General Talk / I need to talk fishing. Nervous evacuation warnings!
« on: September 27, 2020, 09:47:39 PM »
I went fishing Friday.  Small local lake in Santa Rosa. I had my “new to me” free Striker 4 Garmin fish finder.  It works!  I usually pedal away from the ramp.  This time I happen to look at the graph. There were fish right there!  I started casting and bam!   I did well.  What sucks is people coming and going saw me and orbited around me. Haha.   I even got to use my modified net for the first time.  It was awesome.

Damn. The mountain behind me is glowing red.  Fire trucks are screaming.

Here is my net.   Be safe Napa and East Santa Rosa.

Let’s talk fishing and other fun stuff.

General Talk / Crazy-talk! Thinking about buying a cargo van.
« on: September 26, 2020, 06:13:00 PM »
I mountain bike a lot.  I bring my bike into hotel rooms etc.  now, I kayak fish. Somehow, my crazy wife thinks a cargo van is the ticket.  Home Depot runs will never be the same.

I can pull up to,....say Clearlake, go to sleep wake up at dawn and go fishing.  Sleep in the van.

I also bow hunt and hunt-hunt.  Birds, big game, etc.  it wouldn’t suck.

I have a loyal 4x4 Toyota Tacoma I adore.  I’d keep it.

Any van pilots here?

i've been working on my computer and my eyes are crossed.  for some reason, it isnt clear to me.

i am so over carrying a backpack full of stuff in the back of my kayak..i need to organize somewhat.

i'm also considering hitting up a hardware store to see what type of compact toolboxes i can use instead.

General Talk / Lake Berryessa.

Saddens me.  I was all set to go.  Then the fire started.   I have never fished for smallmouth bass ever, and I really have one  on my hit-list.

I’m a public employee civil engineer and I do fire damage repair;  so I KNOW how long it will be before they fix it to the point they can open.   I’m repairing HWY 1 north of Jenner.  All of you driving up there to Timber Cove Have seen the projects.

On the bright side, when they reopen, maybe even a rookie like myself can catch a dumber uneducated, non-pressured fish.  :)

Best wishes to the fire ravaged regions.  My problems are insignificant by comparison.

General Talk / Has anyone had kayak inspected for quagga mussels?
« on: September 05, 2020, 03:08:06 PM »
What’s the procedure?  Do they poke around inside the kayak?

I’m surprised how damp it gets inside my Hobie. I inserted a fan in there to move some air around. Dry it up.  ( a simple ducted fan with some flex hose would be very effective)

Do the inspectors need a bone dry kayak?

I have a Garmin Striker-4 that a friend gave me.  I made a bracket out of a piece of plastic to marry my Garmin Transducer to my Lowrance ready plate.

That problem was solved easily. (See pic)

I’m still waiting fir my battery to ship to me. I have time. I KNOW where the transducer hole goes. (Square black take in pic). I don’t love the location.  1. Water will flow there. 2. I looked inside and the backside is irregular - it was told it’s thick there and to drill hole as far forward as possible to find the thinnest location.  Further back the nut wont have enough thread to grab. Hmmmm.

The hole on the side, I am planning on using the same big 1” hole plug.  NOT the tri-wire hole plug. I like the idea of a mechanical threaded nut with a gasket. I’ll put it beside my rubber net-basket so I can stow the wires there when I’m not using the FF.

Anyone do this on their Hobie Compass?  Kinda nerve racking.  It’s immediately past the point of no return with the trigger pull on my drill. Haha.

Tips? Tricks? Warnings?

It’s the transducer hole that bugs me.  Water cascades down that trough.

General Talk / A bass-boat.
« on: September 03, 2020, 08:48:50 PM »
Hit the Delta today.  Friend invited me on his boat.

We did well on the bass. The boat?  Exhilarating!  Carving down those channels is so exciting.   I even took the opportunity to seek out a few kayak spots.  What a completely different experience.

I bought fuel, and was shocked how much money you can spend to barely move the needle. But the wide open deck, the speed, the gear....kinda nice.

I’ll never get one.  Storage is the Achilles. I have no space.  Plus I don’t want to buy a bigger truck.

Conclusion?  The best bass boat is a friends bass boat.  :)

I’m a bass rookie;  he taught me a lot today. I need a punching rig!  He got a whopper punching.  I was a spectator in the best weed sections. :(

Safety First / A rookies perspective on climbing back into a kayak.
« on: August 14, 2020, 03:06:23 PM »
I spent a lot of time this afternoon falling out of a perfectly good boat.

I really worked a few techniques. Some were exhausting, some resulted in me flipping the kayak, some I ended up falling off the other side.

First, I have a Hobie Compass. I added a small T-handle at the H-track for a good grip point.   Tip:  I bought a $4 handle used for pull starting a small gas-motor.

What worked for me.  Know your boats grab points. Then hold the boat and kick your feet to the surface. Like your pushing a swim board. Once your floating up on the surface, start pulling onto the boat. Keep kicking.   Go until your belly button is centered over the boat.  Now here is the key: stop moving and calm down. Let everything settle.  You, the boat, your HR, etc.   once things have settled.  Roll over on your butt.

I’m not sure I even need my extra t-handle. Trying to “swim cross the top of the boat”, your hand on your near side of the boat seems to be doing most the work.

I also practiced flipping an overturned kayak back up.  Fairly easy.  Just try to climb on and grab the other side.. IT rolls over automatically. Because you are not trying to swim across the top.

I think occasional practice is key. Especially if you add accessories to the kayak.  It would suck to realize too late you blocked yourself with the fish finder.    :)

I hope this helps another rookie.

I’m a complete rookie at this.  Not only are my kayak skills suspect, I can’t catch fish either. :)

I do love exploring. I’ve tried Lake Benoist at Riverfront Regional park several times. Caught a few small bass. Not even worth the photograph.   Lake Benoist is a slight trek.  Once there, your launching into the water off a tiny goat trail.   The easier launch areas have always had a family fishing from them.  This leaves the less desirable places to put in.  And pull out.

This is my first kayak.  I assume scratches are part of the charm?    I still tilt my boat to get the Hobie-cart inserted. More scratches.

FountainGrove lake is much easier to launch from (better fish too!).     I hope to hit bigger waters soon.  Moving on to Lake Sonoma and Berryessa, soon.  Then the Delta!

So quit worrying about scratches?
