General Fishing Tips / Hobie cart wheels?
« on: January 25, 2021, 02:34:33 PM »
I have the lighter weight cart for my Hobie.   I have a few largemouth fishing spots that will require some vigorous energy to access.  No rough stuff, but some longer trails.

Are the cart themselves identical?  Only the wheels are different?!

The heavy duty cart is $200++.  Just buying new wheels for my cart will only be $100ish.

The carts the same?  Any Home Depot wheel options?

General Fishing Tips / fishing rod Buoys or floats.??
« on: January 22, 2021, 09:36:29 AM »
i am still mentally anguishing over my lost rod/reel that sank.

i have been researching lanyards and floats.  i think floats seem to be the better answer for me.

two types.  the butt float seems like it will be to big to fit down inside my rod holders..and the tube ones seem like it will rub against the line.

anyone use these?  do they actually float a heavy rod/reel?

General Talk / i got a month of time-off in the spring!!
« on: January 20, 2021, 10:10:09 AM »
unbelievable.

i dont know if i will do it..i am 80% committed.  but the time off is approved.  i am thinking of end of march into 3 weeks of April to master BASS fishing.

Clearlake, Berryessa, and the Delta.  there are remaining challenges, like the money..(gas, lodging, food, etc) and time off away from my wife.  and the looming pandemic is always on my brain.  i will burn up some gasoline for sure!!

my wife is okay with it.  just me and my Hobie :)

Safety First / putting ON a dry-suit is a really good time.
« on: January 19, 2021, 01:36:51 PM »
wow.  i actually watched a video!!

Burping it at the end was awesome.  the rest, was somewhat awkward.  i need shorter arms!  i believe i will need to pack a folding chair when i winter fish.

at one point, i had a leg in an arm sleeve.  hahhaha..

getting out of it was tougher than putting it on.  i assume it gets easier when the latex collar loosens up a bit?

Coincidence?   Hmmm.

Maybe I should wash and wax my truck to bring back winter.

:). Troubling times in the kingdom.

General Fishing Tips / keeping fishing rods ON the kayak?
« on: January 05, 2021, 02:42:05 PM »
my rods: in storage in the rod holders i have mini bungees that i hook around the reel.  they are secure WHILE IN STORAGE.,  the rod/reel in use is in peril.  i only largemouth bass fish (for now) so i am casting and casting, and really being active with the rod.  i am not trolling.

the danger occurs when i need to do something and i put the rod down.  let's just say there is a rod, that was my favorite drop-shot rig at the bottom of Lake Sonoma. :(  deep!!

i cannot imagine a float tube around the rod, it will hinder the line.  a leash?  man, i seem to to tangle enough already.  a leash seems like it would be problematic.

any tips?

(my friends son may scuba dive for my rod.  i know where i sank it.)

I bought one.  My shop offered to put it in for me for VERY little money.  He even threw in the Plano box rack thing. He had one laying around a customer didn’t want. Score!  Free.

I got it home and checked his install; I noted one corner of the gasket was pushed up.  Oh-o.  I stared at it. I even sprayed water on it to confirm it leaked.   I pulled it off and noticed the issue. The cut hole in the kayak was a tight fit. Simply screwing down the frame would gush out the gasket when it pressed up against the kayak opening. . I wrapped gaffers tape around the rim protecting the gasket “tails”. No go.

I had to take a utility knife and trim the hole out in the offending areas.   It’s fixed now, but I swear I had to take that thing on and off like a crazy person. I chased tight spots all around. If I did it myself, I think I would run an electric sander around the perimeter to smooth out the edges.  Remove the toothyness that grabbed that gasket would mitigate the issue.  Hope this helps someone about to tackle the project.  I don’t even know where my jigsaw is!

Does anyone think I need to put the tiniest bead of silicon sealant around the outer rim?  (On the rectangular and round hole I had moved forward). Clear silicon might be cheap insurance and will be invisible.

General Fishing Tips / getting a free baitcast reel cost me money!
« on: December 22, 2020, 01:19:47 PM »
haha.  figures.

a guy gave me a good reel.  the Abu RevoSX.  he had it spooled up with what i would guess is 12lb flouro.  it was clean, looked unused.  i imagined he cannot cast a baitcast reel, since i fish with him and all he has are spinning reels.

i tied on a casting plug, stood in my driveway, checked a few settings, turned UP the mag brake for safety and let it rip.  WHOA!!  i had to thumb the spool as my plug went screaming towards a Sprinter Van windshield.  i gathered my composure and stepped into the street and looked down the road towards safety, and let it rip again.  it cast awesome!!  i think it cast further than my Shimano SLX DC.  (which has 12lb flouro)  i lady walking a dog asked me if the fish were biting..haha.  she then said, "you think you can hit the basketball hoop?"  i let it rip and it went thru the net.  twice in a row!  about 40 yards away.  i gel with reel perfectly.  i went to the garage and swap my DC reel on and stood in the same place.  bzzzzzzz..i cast exactly the same distance.  same rod, same plug, etc.

damn.  i went into the house and ordrered a Dobyns Sierra Heavy rod.  haha.  the reel is a 6.4:1 so it will be my swimbait, chatterbait, etc rod.  i rarely cast crankbaits, so i opted out of a fiberglass crankbait rod...

my wife: "did you just order another rod?"

errr...look puppies!

General Fishing Tips / Having issues with Nocqua
« on: December 16, 2020, 07:12:55 AM »
Customer service is great. They put a replacement in the mail and it’s coming to me

Mine is so inconsistent. Max charge is diminished. New, it only got to 12.11v and it just got worse; now only maxing our at 11.99v.  It seems to run down faster as well. Luckily winter fishing trips are only about 4 hours. My new Lowrance hook reveal 5 sucks  more juice than my previous Garmin striker 4.   My new FF burns 0.9a per hour. Full bright for my eyeballs

I hope the new cell works. I’m Ordering one from that Chet guy in January. I have two day camping fishing trips penciled in starting in late February. I like overkill :)

I heard they run hot and die. Truth?  The water cools them supposedly.

But some kayak guys glue them inside their hulls?  Or mount them to their bass boat trolling motors.  They cannot possibly shut down and reboot between spots.

What do you think?  Hear anything?  I know I ran my Garmin in my garage for a day to burn down my battery. No issues.  But my hew Lowrance?  Scared:)

General Fishing Tips / kayak fishing with a slow kayaker?
« on: November 30, 2020, 02:39:49 PM »
haha..

this weekend, i was talking to my buddy - pedaling leisurely to our first fish spot...  just talking loudly over my shoulder.  no response, i look back and he was way the heck back there.  just chugging along.

i enjoy fishing with others immensely.  i love the camaraderie.   he likes to stick with me, but i always have to wait for him.  i dont "love" the journey..i just want to get there and start casting.  my Hobie Compass is pretty quick..i got it up to 4.9mph according to my GPS..i feel like i can go forever at 3mph.

i feel safety and etiquette wise, i should stay at his pace..right?  you and your buds all similar in speed?  i wont stop fishing with my new friend.  we get along pretty good, as far as i am concerned.  he may think i am a dikhead..who knows? :D (and he just wants my secret spots)

i want to upgrade my Garmin S-4.

does the Dragonfly count down the remaining battery voltage like the Garmin.

the Raymarine brochures leave something to be desired.

my my math, the battery consumption at 5.3 w per RMS, i should have 20 hours of use with my current Nocqua 10Ahr battery, right?

General Talk / Eating the whole fish.
« on: November 03, 2020, 04:50:14 PM »
My friend/coworker’s kid got a Ling.  Craziest looking fish ever.    I WANT TO CATCH ONE!

Anyways. He’s cleaning it up and about to huck the head into the garbage.  I grabbed it and out in on ice.   He moved the knife further down the body and I ended up with some meat actually.   My wife is Taiwanese and fish head is a thing.  I made up a Japanese Ponzu sauce.    We shall see. I have a “plan-B” for myself.

You all whole fish people?

General Talk / It came together AGAIN. kayak bass. PBD
« on: October 29, 2020, 06:32:08 PM »
PBD = personal best day.

I lost count of the dinks.  But I caught 6 keepers. My first cast was a 3lb fish. This time I bright a camera and my landing net. It’s the best feeling when a bass gets into the net.

i believe you all call it "immersion gear"?

what am i wearing during the winter months, floating in a big frosty lake?  Farmer Johns?

or a dry suit?  this is all foreign to me.  initially, i thought i would put the boat into deep storage.  now?  not so much.  i wanna keep at it.
