General Talk / 3-Day Father & Daughter(s) Trip (non-kayak)
« on: November 07, 2022, 11:56:30 AM »
School’s closed for a few days this week and I decided it would be a good time to take my daughters (4 & 7) on a 3-day excursion and give my wife a few days to herself back at the house. Original plan was up in the Sierra’s for some hiking, bear hunting, and fishing, but the weather decided to make that adventure a little too challenging. I started thinking about alternative ideas and finally settled on a Plan B that I’m pretty excited about. If all goes according to plan, I should be dabbling in some new fishing methods & maybe add a little turf to my surf menu.

Day 1 – Point Reyes morning hike to find the Tule elk. I’ve never seen them out there and would love to get my eyes on those animals. I think elk are pretty darn awesome beasts and would love to see a bull with a nice rack. Then off to Bodega Bay to our campsite @ Doran Campground to try our luck crab snaring & surf fishing. I’ve never tried this kind of fishing before, so I’m excited to see if we can catch anything from land (all my ocean fishing has previously been kayak based). I might even try throwing a hoop net off the jetty for some rock crab or roaming dungies. Likely be some sandcastle building and kite flying thrown in the mix to keep the girls excited.

Day 2 – Head up along the Sonoma Coast to explore shore rock fishing (also never done). Been watching too much Fisherman’s Life and I’m excited to see if we can catch some rock fish or lingcod from shore. Then camping out at Ocean Cove Campground and doing an evening tide pool search and find (have a nifty little tide pool ID book that they girls like to use)…maybe harvest some seaweed to dry by the fire.

Day 3 is travel back home & nothing special (I’m not really counting this day in my quest), but Day 4 is my free day where Dad (aka me) gets to go out solo. I just got a shotgun this year and duck season opened…thinking this is as good a reason as any to get my waterfowl tags and try to bag a few ducks. I would love to check out the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, but I need to figure out the reservation process or if there are first-come-first-serve (non-resolvable) options. I’m a newbie to hunting birds and naive to this process, so it’s crunch time for me to sort out this process over the next few days. Feel free to tell/give me advice in this area if you have the experience.

I’m looking forward to some time with my daughters and sharing another adventure with them. I want them to understanding and appreciate where their food comes from. It’s easy to go to the store to buy what you need, but it means a lot more to harvest from your land or the wild. At this age, it’s a fine balance of pushing them to explore while keeping them excited and interested in the process. So far, I think I’ve done a good job with that and I try my best to take them along as much as I can. In the end, I know they will form their own passions in life and it may be completely separate from mine…maybe it’s a little bit of selfishness in hoping that my hobbies will become their future hobbies. But rooted deeper is an interest to bond and teach them how to be independent. I’m an adventurer at heart that likes to push my boundaries (or at least learn what those boundaries are). They are too young for that kind of an experience, but when the time comes…

Updates will be provided in picture form as the adventures take place (hopefully able to do same day updates if cell service is available). Leaving bright and early Thursday, 11/10. Fingers crossed we all have fun and meltdowns/tantrums are at a minimum.

General Fishing Tips / Current Bolinas beach situation?
« on: July 26, 2022, 09:44:36 PM »
Anyone know how the Bolinas beach is looking? Last year was a little sketch at high tide. Heard some reports a few months ago that there was more sand, but I wasn't sure if that is still the case. I'm considering Bolinas as an option for a weekend salmon hunt, but want to know if there are any high tide risks during launches or landings. Don't want a repeat of last year...no lost gear or damage, but it got "interesting" at one point navigating the kayak in front of the wall after landing on the beach.

General Talk / 3-day, 3 species challenge (3/25-3/27)
« on: March 19, 2022, 01:18:54 PM »
I'm preparing for a 3-day hunting/fishing solo road trip next weekend. Some details are still being decided, but my plan is to attempt 3 distinctly different animals. This will be my first attempt at both pig and turkey, and I'm also going to add on a fishing trip (TBD - likely sturgeon, hali, or crab).

This all started when I finally bought my first 12g shot gun (Winchester SXP) a few weeks ago with the idea of adding various bird meats to the freezer. Turkey season is just around the corner, and I've been doing some research to figure out where I should go. Several YouTube fishing and hunting videos later and now I'm turning a simple turkey hunt into something a lot more complicated...one thing led to another and I've decided to pack together 3 individual 1-day excursions into a big 3-day adventure. I don't have all the details sorted out and I have a few different fishing options depending on weather conditions, surf conditions, recent fishing reports, etc. Right now, I'm leaning towards the following:

Option #1: The Boar, Beard, Butt hunt
Fri, 3/25 (Day 1): Pig hunt + turkey scout (leaning Los Padres NF)
Sat, 3/26 (Day 2: Pig hunt + turkey hunt
Sun, 3/26 (Day 3): Hali (SF Bay)

Option #2: The Sturgie, Swine, Spur hunt
Fri, 3/25 (Day 1): Sturgeon (Suisun Bay?)
Sat, 3/26 (Day 2: Pig hunt + turkey hunt (leaning Los Padres NF)
Sun, 3/26 (Day 3): Pig hunt + turkey hunt

I'm excited to try a few new things that I've had on my bucket list (pig & turkey hunting), as well as spend some time on the water. I'm still gathering info on locations (fishing reports and potential hunting grounds). I'm going in blind to the hunting locations, so I don't have high hopes of success, but I don't mind putting in the miles to increase my odds. We'll see what next weekend offers, but I like to imagine the unlikely chance of a successful best-case scenario and completing a multi-species trifecta weekend that fills the freezer...highly unlikely, but I'm a dreamer.

I'm willing to accept the wisdom and advice from experienced public land turkey & pig hunters. I don't come from a hunting background (just started hunting 6 years ago with only 1 successful season...bear). Always interested in learning more from those willing to share. Currently planning for the Los Padres NF based on some CDFW info. Doing lots of Google Earth research but seeing significant burn scars from recent wildfires in areas I was going to hunt. Should be lots of fresh growth following the fires, just don't know if anything has migrated back into the areas. Guess I'm going to find out.

I'm torn between hali & sturgeon...recent reports make me think the catching odds are higher with hali, so I'm leaning that way. Final decision may be impacted by weather & water conditions. Crab is the third option, but I feel like it's pretty hit or miss this time of year and it's an unlikely 3rd option.

Planning to post some updates on the experience.

Hello fellow anglers,
I finally have some free time on Saturday, 8/31 to add some meat to the freezer. Now the decision is where and what? I don’t get too many days on the water, so I’m trying to make it an enjoyable and successful trip. My first thought was to go after the salmon bite on the Marin Coast, but I’m a little unsure about wind forecast when I look offshore. Other option is to go after halibut in Tomales (7:55a low/2:04p high) or San Pablo Bay (8:48a low/2:55p high)…what part of the tide is good for halibut? Plan C is to head far upriver and drift the Sac or Feather River for salmon, which will probably be less productive, but it’s warm and relaxing. I wanted to get some thoughts from other ocean anglers on the coastal & bay conditions for Saturday. I’ve been pondering this for a few days and decided to ask the experts. I don’t want to drive 2-3 hours to the ocean (coming from Sac), only to be hit with wind and worrisome conditions. Thoughts on where I should launch (coast, bay, river)? Thanks for your input.
