General Talk / Likely White Shark Fatality-Pt Reyes not in press yet
« on: October 01, 2023, 04:38:03 PM »
Just got a message from a buddy still working for the NPS. Some time this morning a group of three hikers at Pt. Reyes dropped down to an isolated beach and decided to go for a swim and it ended tragically for one.

While in the water two of the swimmers noticed a commotion in the water and a large blood slick and could not find the third swimmer. This has not yet hit the press but looks pretty certain. Marin Coast In October and swimming in the water are a horrible combination. Likely, searchers are still trying to locate remains…RIP😞

Don’t know Scott but do know of his research of many years on the South Farrallon Island with Pete Pyle. If nobody has ever read “Devil’s Teeth”, by Susan Casey, buy the book! She chronicles her time spent with Scott and Peter as they did their shark research at South Farrallon!

I do know Paul Kanive, who did research work with Scott…a few years back I got to jump on board with Paul on his boat off Tomales point for a session and am here to say for those who’ve never been up close to a White Shark…they are far larger than a television perspective!!!
The first shark that came to the boat seemed huge to me, the girth something to behold. I nearly crapped as it cruised by the boat some 4 feet away. I was astounded when Paul said, “it’s only a 9 footer”.

Some time later he lured another to the boat and it was WAY bigger than the 9 footer. Its dorsal fin appeared a ways behind the boat and was noticeably taller than the first shark to appear. Paul stated matter of factly that this one was “an average” sized shark at 14 feet. It was GIGANTIC in all proportions and something I shall never forget seeing…..it was a gift of a lifetime and sent my heart racing!!!

Hope this is not a repeat post. A surfer was attacked and suffered fatal injuries this Christmas Eve morning at Morro Bay…prayers for this waterman’s family. RIP fellow ocean lover🙏🏻

I second that opinion. OB looks like that a few days a year and the break zone is up to 1/2 mile offshore. It would chew up and spit out most of persons attempting to launch a kayak there...i have worked there for 19 years

General Talk / Help with Sonoma coast Rockfish spot
« on: August 14, 2020, 05:53:07 PM »
Ok NCKA brethren, am embarrassed to say I live 30 minutes from Jenner and have fished in my kayak but few times on our coast. Know the Lost Coast very well. That said I really only have fished out of Timber Cove a couple of times and don’t even know the reefs north or south. Looking for some help on a solid Rockfish launch locale for tomorrow. Heard Ft Ross is good, Ocean Cove, Stillwater, etc. Not asking for gps coordinates just a decent spot. Don’t know what kind of current access there is in our current Covid world. Hope someone will throw me a bone. Ocean looks awesome this weekend and I was headed for Shelter Cove not need to be closer to home tomorrow. Hope you all get after it this weekend. Currently melting at home In Forestville at 104

I’d say a side scan is probably useless because when they come in and bite they come in hard and they come in fast and you won’t have any idea it’s happening until either you or your kayak are in his mouth

Usual  beach is a shore break beach, meaning those waves break right on shore. That said typically if you can get past the first wave or two they don’t break very far out from my experience there
