I would like to buy one of these extremely useful pieces of plastic without shelling out $400. If anyone has any leads, please let me know. I appreciate and welcome alternative suggestions, but I don't want to use a boogie board either.

Cheers,
Ezra

There is one on craigslist, first generation banks board.
I believe it is overpriced at $250
here is the link:

What's wrong with a buggy board?
I believe it's better than an ab float tube. If you're contemplating an ab float tube, there was one at my local thrift shop for something like $10, no tube. A new tube will cost you another $10-$15, or you could use pool noodles instead.
Alternately you may opt for an inflatable dive board, from places like Mako, for $135, but it may not be the best choice with rockfish spines.

Mako also has a tow behind storage float for about $190, but the banks board woule be a far better choice IMHO

Good luck!

Ezra,

I have a 2nd gen. Banks board that I used when ab season was still a thing.  After the closure, I probably used it may be three times total.  While I still enjoy spearfishing and don't mind heading out with new buddies, the fact is that the group I was diving with is not active anymore.    So, it has been collecting dust.

Here is the offer: why don't you borrow mine and make good use of it.  In the unlikely scenario that I need to use it here and there, I will find you to pick it up for the duration.  When you are tired of that arrangement or find something you like to keep permanent, then I will take it back.  I live in the East Bay also, so logistics should be easy.

Just treat us with more fish porn like the one in this post and it is all good. PM me if interested.
